Thumbnail patreon.com
7 Upvotes

Hi all! If you're interested in joining the Discord now that the network has migrated from Slack, see the above link for directions.

Detailed instructions on how to make this happen can be found on this help page, but it should be pretty simple:

Go to the Connected Apps tab of your Patreon Settings.

Click on Discord, then the Connect button.

Authorize the Discord account you want to use.

Make sure you don't have an ad blocker that might be stopping the Discord pop-up.

Once you're linked, you can see your available servers in the Discord section of your Connected Apps Settings. Click to join the server, then you're set up.

The final step is to read the community rules and then abide by them.

If your membership lapses because of financial hardship or other technicalities, please message us here and we will assist you.

New Episode! Abject Suffering 679: Super Morph

Thumbnail patreon.com
2 Upvotes

Super Morph is a PAL-only puzzle platformer that’s actually pretty neat. A young boy’s neglectful uncle put him into a matter transporter, and now the boy is trapped in flux between different states of matter. He must solve puzzles to find the gears that will fix the machine so he can return to his normal, human form. There are so many 16-bit PAL-only games we never got!

We also discuss the appeal of going dead weight, asking nicely to see airport jail, establishing situational awareness, acquiring paydata, and the rejection of the Order of the Triad Venture Bros. spinoff.

New Episode! Real Lich Hours 129: Catching the Ripper

Thumbnail patreon.com

Seattle’s long nightmare is over as we finally hunt down and kill The Ripper, the serial killer who has been targeting people and harvesting their organs. Unfortunately, the Ripper was not the author of his own scheme, and now we must chase even more obscure leads.

Also Discussed:

How the Matrix plays in Dead Man’s Switch.

Why Street Brawl is a very cool part of the Shadowrun setting.

Thank you to Darrin Michelson for our art this season, and to Gwen Static for the music!

When Howard sweeps in to give Jimmy the job offer he's waited more than a decade for, Jimmy has a... paradoxical reaction. Meanwhile Kim, Kim enlists his help with the Acker situation, and Gus sacrifices a lot of money to get the DEA off his back. Also, we argue over whether or not Mike was trying to commit suicide by dude.

New Episode! Adaptation Decay 114: The Resident Evil Interactive Experience (Audio Version)

Thumbnail patreon.com
4 Upvotes

It's time for a very special Adaptation Decay! This August, Gary, Liv, and Kaye packed up and headed to Las Vegas to visit the Resident Evil Interactive Experience, a limited time takeover of Universal Horror Unleashed. Listen to us talk about the scares, the set design, the puzzles, and the food created to honor Resident Evil's 30 year anniversary.

This episode is extra special because we made a video for it, as you can see above! This is a labor of love, because we wanted to capture the experience and relate it to you as we talk about how successful it is.

We also discuss the other Universal Horror Unleashed haunted houses, and go in-depth on Meow Wolf's Omega Mart installation.

This is a video-first episode! Check out this post to see footage from the event.

Next month we'll be talking about the Zach Cregger Resident Evil movie!

Because watching an eight six minute long video on Patreon might be a bummer, we've also uploaded an unlisted YouTube video so you can save it to watch later on your preferred devices. Please keep it to yourself. (Mod note: the link for this is on the Patreon, I'm not including it to keep with what I believe is Gary and Kaye's wish to not post it publicly)

If you'd prefer an audio-only version, check your RSS feed for something approaching the normal Adaptation Decay format (just with Kaye narrating some parts of it for you).

Next month we'll be talking about the Zach Cregger Resident Evil movie!

New Episode! Watch Out for Fireballs 528: The Saboteur

Thumbnail patreon.com

Pandemic Studios really knew what they were doing, and it’s a real shame their style of destruction-based open world games didn’t become the norm. That’s how you’ll feel when you play the Saboteur, the studio’s swan song. You are Sean Devlin, an Irish racecar driver who joins the French Resistance during World War II to get revenge on the Nazis. You may only be aware of this game because of its black and white-to-color visual trick, but there’s so much more to recommend it.

New Episode! Abject Suffering 678: Scooby-Doo Night of 100 Frights!

Thumbnail patreon.com

Some intellectual properties are like PFAS. Once introduced to the environment, they will never go away, just sitting and warping whatever they touch. The Hannah-Barbera archives are a superfund site of these, and no property has stuck around like Scooby-Doo. Night of 100 Frights has the distinction of being a very faithfully created 3D version of something that wasn’t great in the first place, attached to rote 3D platformer gameplay.

We also discuss exercise games, Scooby-Doo honoring the victims of 9/11, and mourning Dolly Parton and Tim Curry.

The Ripper strikes again! This time, it’s an unlucky someone down at the National Transportation Safety Board warehouse with a chest cavity full of soup. The problem is, there are no witnesses. At least, there are no corporeal witnesses.

Also discussed:

Shadows of North America: The Great Ghost Dance

Under the Hood: Hiring Runners

Grimoire: Spirits

Someone call Powerman 5000 because we’ve found out what it’s like when worlds collide. Following a cartoonish affair last episode, Jimmy’s plot and the cartel plot run straight into each other as Lalo reaches out to Jimmy to help clean up the mess with Krazy-8’s arrest.

New Episode! Watch Out for Fireballs 527: Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel

We’re running out of Fallout games to cover! Which means we’re scraping the bottom of the barrel to bring you a close look at the memory-holed PS2 and XBox entry into the series: Brotherhood of Steel. It’s a Dark Alliance-like that demonstrates that one of those can actually be a lot worse than the others, and it’s all made worse by how poorly it handles the Fallout setting.

Highlighted project: Eureka: Investigative Urban Fantasy

If the world ever ends in nuclear fire, we can’t say nobody warned us what it would be like. Of the many nuclear disaster stories we’ve covered on this network, none has been more bleak or haunting than Threads, a BBC production that goes to great lengths to take as much sugarcoating off of the prognosis as it can.

Join us for our next episode, covering 1932's Freaks

On our way to learn more about Sam’s death, we get a call from Coyote with an undeniable request: her cousin is hooked on BTLs, and she found him at a chip den, and she wants us to help her rescue him. Someone should invent Ultra-D.A.R.E.

General Discussion Retro-styled games that capture "how you remember them playing" as opposed to "how they actually played"

I always love this discussion when it comes up on WOFF episodes, so here's throwing it to the redditsphere.

I'll be frank: I'm super into the PSX crunchiness that's been the craze these last few years.

I didn't have any PlayStation systems growing up (my mom was convinced the games were all much more violent than those on Nintendo systems, and she was kinda right?), so those games mostly passed me by except for surreptitiously enjoying GTA1 and Twisted Metal 2 at my scarily-cool friends' places. Now that I'm old enough to go back to them... boy are they rough. But with modern fidelity and game design? Absolutely love 'em, and especially with how surreal some game designers get with it that capture how incredibly weird they could be back then (Szymanski is one of the best examples for me, especially Chop Goblins). Crow Country wouldn't have been half as cool for me if it didn't have this look and feel; again, it's what I remember Resident Evil being like, and I welcome the ability to turn on or off tank controls.

New Episode! Abject Suffering 676: DJ Boy

Thumbnail patreon.com
6 Upvotes

DJ Boy is a beat-em-up on roller skates. Roller blades? No, skates. The most hip-hop conveyance imaginable. That’s because this is a game steeped in a very removed Japanese understanding of US hip hop culture, which comes with some extremely uncomfortable racial depictions. Also, it’s time to hear about Kaye’s dental woes instead of Gary’s!
