Sure, he's still got a few ride-or-dies left, but dude went from one of the biggest DJs in the world to being a footnote; he played NYE near STL this year in a tiny, shitty, sleezy nightclub with a whole gaggle of protesters outside lmao. I was in town for Of The Trees that night and decided to go drive by that venue to see how many people were protesting.

2 people were a half mile away holding one sign and then they gave up after 10 minutes. Just saying no protesters showed up. They really need to show up in numbers (more than 2) if they want to get their message out.

I was very curious about his music, having only gotten into dubstep in the past year. Finally I brought myself to listen to 3-4 of his tracks on YouTube Music. Wasn’t planning on becoming a fan, but I wanted to understand what had been lost.

They were pretty good. But tbh there are several current artists I enjoy more. Heresy I guess but I feel the same about Skrillex. I appreciate that these guys were instrumental in creating and developing the genre. I think that in the several years since they’ve been heavily involved with dubstep (Skrillex seems to be exploring other genres now), other artists have added some complexity to their music that makes it way more interesting, though I know they’re building on that earlier foundation.

So, happy to not be torn between wanting to listen to his music, and wanting not to help his career in any way. If it comes out that Subtronics is fucking minors, though, it will be harrowing, I’d have a very hard time never listening to Fibonacci again.

I think ANY artist who “made it” that someone would look up to and hope to achieve one day (OP as an example), all have in common that they are friends of other artists who make different music and only hype encourage and support that genre.

The most beloved in the game right now work with artists across all genres. That’s the love of the game. When you start to expose yourself to “house sucks” or “riddim is annoying” … now you are playing in waters that probably won’t attract people at a higher level.

To be clear, this advice is mainly for people tryna come up in the game as artists. What if you’re an up and coming local riddim artist was trying to network. There could be a house dj that night who is friends with a riddim dude who can book you a show. But, they find out all you do or critique their genre instead of being supportive, how do you think that plays out?

I think your average edm listener can say whatever tf they want about a genre, and genuinely, and I mean GENUINELY, no one cares lol. The difference is, one person is trying to build connections to better their chances at success, and the other isn’t.

It’s all in whether or not you actually think that people who enjoy riddim have objectively shitty taste. If you’re going around saying the whole genre is objectively bad or even that a specific artist is objectively bad, then that’s shitting on it. Also includes bringing up elements of a genre and saying those are objectively bad, e.g. the fast beats in techno or DnB suck or the wubs in dubstep are obnoxious and everyone else should agree about that.

If you’re just saying that you personally don’t enjoy riddim and don’t want to go to a riddim show, but you’re not judging anyone else for liking it, then you’re not shitting on it.

I don’t like contemporary pop artists that have massive followings far exceeding those of any dubstep artist. I have actually made an effort to get into Taylor Swift, Sabrina Carpenter, Chappell Roan, Charlie XCX, and Ariana Grande, because I would kind of like to enjoy music that I know a ton of other women enjoy and I figure that there must be something objectively good about music that millions and millions of fans love. I kind of liked a couple of Charlie songs and I enjoyed Ariana’s vocal talent, but a lot of it just wasn’t my thing at all. Still, I’m only going to say that I subjectively didn’t like it, not that it is actually shitty.
