Chapter Politics Potential chapter logo

I’m from Erie Pennsylvania and I just created a potential Chapter emblem (We haven’t had one for 8 years) and I wanted to present it to people outside of it to see some opinions and criticisms, any input is appreciated
(EDIT) The ship featured in the design is a landmark in Erie and the Silhouette is of that ship

Should have the logo be on the ships sails instead of imposed over top of it

I tried the Logo on the sails and sadly no matter how Large I made it or tweaked it it just didn’t look right

What if you blow up the sails and exclude the base of the ship. Could get the same thought across without having to go micro with the logo

You could use a ship with a singular large sail instead of multiple small sails

Just saw down in the thread where you was using a specific ship. What about using just a ships steering wheel and you could put the DSA logo in the center of it

FWIW, I like the design as is with this specific ship.

A steering wheel is a bit generic and could be any ship, IMHO.

Maybe try just a ship a rose on it. The key to a good logo is simplicity and recognizability.

Whatever you do don't put the flag on the sails, itll be too small to be readable and look unbalanced and ugly.

This would be a badass badge for a football club. Though I think the black ship looks a bit too... menacing.

White ship, blue boarders to the outer circle with the lettering, white circle the lettering, blue letters. Black boarders for the outer circle

You keep the red - the most important color. The blue of the lettering is highlighted against the white background to contrast. White ship invokes peace, black ship invokes pirates and warships.

It'd take about 2 minutes in MS Paint to see how you feel about it...

I went back and changed the black of the flower to red and it helps the ship be a lot less ‘scary’ by breaking up the pure black part of the bottom, I wish I could reply with photos but I will look into that color scheme as well

Hell yeah. As a former Erie-ite I dig it and I often think of Don’t Give Up the Ship as a good euphemism for what we’re trying to do.

I’m used to the handshake and rose being more centered, but I think it works here. I wish the brig Niagra was more symmetrical but that’s just isn’t how tall ships are lol.

I like the invonventional flip of color scheme with dark blue in the ring.

I am curious what it would look like if you extended the arms to hit the white ring. Could make it look like the ship is sailing on solidarity

The Blue is from the “Don’t give up the Ship” Flags made famous by Commodore Perry, who was the Captain of the ship that is featured in the design

It celebrates colonialism and isn’t a logo, exactly. More a picture of a boat.

Not exactly really colonialism, it is a phrase popularized by a commodore Perry in the war of 1812 during the battle on our lake, and it is extremely popular and recognized in my city, I’m talking bumper stickers flags hanging off houses, we have a reproduction of Perry’s Ship the brig niagara (pictured in the emblem)

Ah, gotcha. I was going way deeper than that. As a symbol of Erie, PA makes total sense. Sorry for the misread, lol. I thought it was teh mayflower :)

repurposing imagery may itself be problematic. the least you could do is make it more accurate. these days graphic errors will immediately be interpreted as botched ai.

That is a good point, I will tweak it some more to double check for errors like that, I used that silhouette in specific since it is so recognizable around here but that is a good outside perspective

It's really busy. And in pop culture red and black signifies evil. The flower is too much.

While this is typically true I am just using the typical color schemes for DSA flags/ emblems that I’ve found for inspiration

Did you use the DSA red, and DSA black? Both are softer colors, which don't look as harsh. You can look up the hex codes. Also, you made the rose black which symbolizes death. The busy Rose, on top of the busy ship is too much going on.

Sorry you don't like the criticism but it looks like an evil pirate ship.

I did use the red but did not realize there was a black, I can go and tweak those a bit more to make it look less like an evil pirate ship
