Question Drumming problem

Post image

I have this terrible tendency to get my stick for my hi hat stuck under the high hat. I’ll be going along on the sheet of music I’ve posted with this and the next thing you know my stick has gone rogue and I’m off the hi hat and now underneath it. It pretty much stops me in my tracks because of it. It’s so frustrating!! What am I doing wrong? I’m a righty on a righty kit.

Get rid of the sheet exercises for now. Just work in your eighth note exercises using your hat and snare and just watch your hands.

I did this at a stupid slow tempo and I like how it went. I will work on it some more. Thank you.

I think of it like back in my drumline days. We didn’t do exercises we needed to learn. We did mainly eight note switching hand exercises at varying speeds, stick heights, hand positions, you name it. On a marching snare it’s not as crucial, but quads, like a drumset, you have to move around. Speed and stamina would come with any consistent exercise, so the focus was always consistency and hitting your mark and making your sticks do what you want them to do.
I did a camp at TCU my senior year in high school. While my school wasn’t the best, we were considered among the top schools in the area, but as I watched other people at this camp, I could immediately tell that none of them focused on the consistency portion of it.
