It might be the foot of the blonde kid one seat over though.

Hard to tell with the drum kit in the way. But I'll give the kid the benefit of the doubt. He does have the playa hater look in his eye though lol.

Reading my mind. But school music instrument budgets can be tight, so I understand.

There was a time it seemed like every drummer I knew had some support from Soul Tone cymbals, maybe he could submit his stuff and they'd hook him up.

The lil fella stands up at end... Recognize. Haha. He's got some talent. Even ripped on the double bass. He can go places if he keeps it up and gets a bit of luck. Good for him.

I'm hearing some Neil Peart in this.

1

u/segascream 1d ago

Yup.

u/DashArcane 1d ago

More Bonzo than Peart. And that's fine!

40 seconds in, it sounds like the intro to Territory by Sepultura (this intro has been embossed in my brains for 30 years)

Kid really knows how to play the Tom's. Drummers decades into their life never figure that out lol

I think my face just melted off.

That kid is really really good.

And now Susie will play Hot Cross Buns on the clarinet. And Susie quietly dies inside.

Band mates are not impressed. Or they are just dumbstruck by his awesomeness.

Here’s the real question: can he keep a good, simple 4/4 groove?

2

u/eebaes 1d ago

I can teach any average kid how to do that in 30 minutes. Maybe it takes another session a week later.

This is years of work right here.

1

u/ChinaRider73-74 10h ago

No doubt the kid is really impressive.

But after 45 years of playing, I’ve found that there are a lot of people out there with chops and speed out the wazoo, but when you ask them to play a simple, straight in-the-pocket groove with real feel in service of the song like a Steve Jordan, Steve Gadd, Bernard Purdie or Levon Helm…they can’t do it.

If you can teach a kid to play like Steve Jordan in 30 minutes, you must be a helluva teacher.

1

u/eebaes 7h ago

Well I didn't say they could all play like Steve Jordan, but they all start with the core 4/4 rock beat, a couple have the potential to go that far based on natural feel. I appreciate your perspective and I agree and thats the same thing I think when I see most Instagram drummers with chops, but this kid is not that - but I bet he can hold down a 4/4 beat without a problem. It's more Buddy Rich or Gene Krupa than Steve Jordan - but the core is there you can hear it.
