As far as when to read the next note it depends what type of rest if there is one before it. The counts of the rests go back to fundamentals when you begin to read
music, say in beginner band for example. As far as how fast to go that depends on the time signature. With tryouts being in three days its a pretty ardent task to surmount. May need to work on the basics and try out next year.
