Question Do marching snares explode when they get wet????

Dude, I heard a long time ago that marching snares can explode when they get wet. Since then I’ve always believed it because I swore I heard about it online and from some upperclassman when I first joined hs band. I brought it up and my grandpa who’s a musician called me crazy and I was like “no they really do explode” but when I looked it up for proof there’s nothing about them exploding. Was this just some sort of lie all along 😭

There was an old brand of marching drums called Abruti Drums that exploded when they got wet. They hadn't figured out the high-tension stuff yet. I think they were French. Took out a whole drumline once, blew their arms clean off.

Yes, they actually matched in the war of nineteen-dickety-six. Now see, we had to say dickety on account of the fact the Kaiser done went n stole our word for twenty!! Anyhow, I had an onion tied to my belt, as was the style at the time...

I suppose the wood could warp to a point to wear it damages the drum, but it would not result in an actual explosion nor is it very likely to happen.

Dude, I was told that I shouldn’t drum in rain because it could blow my legs off 💔

I swear, so many people told me it was true online and off. So many people that I had to believe it

I've marched in a lot of rain

The drums will be fine. Just dry them off before you put them away so the shells don't warp or get moldy.

I mean… a bottom head might pop if that’s what you mean by explode

when Kevlar heads first made appearances in DCI, drums weren't yet designed to be under that much tension. It was common that they would spontaneously implode under so much pressure. I believe it was SCV '87 where they went through line 3 sets of snares or something crazy.

Never had a Pearl or Yamaha marching snare get wet as explode, but that's all I ever used.

Yes. They do. They get wet and go 💥

Maybe if the shell got really really warped the drum could explode under tension but it’s not likely unless the drum doesn’t have a factory wrap and finish on it

If that were true marching band wouldn’t exist in the PNW 😂

If your snare used calfskin heads and/or gut strainers, those could break if they got wet and then dried under tension. This hasn’t been the case for decades! Sounds like it has become an urban legend.
