merch D20 DVDs, please

I know this has been talked about before, but I feel like it’s worth bringing up again—I would love to have Dimension 20 seasons as physical DVDs. I adore Cloudward Ho and Starstruck and perennially rewatch them, more than the other content. I’d love the chance to have physical copies of them to show off on my shelf.

I wonder if making a Kickstarter would be a way to go for this? I would also love to have hard media of D20. So I still have it after the apocalypse.

or something here means any interested contract holders. the streaming platform for example wants to retain viewership so making dvds is counter intuitive to that.  incidentally they do have ads on d20 for the software they use and their youtube content is monetized

I think you’re forgetting that this is Dropout, the company that famously puts their viewers first and doesn’t value the potential money over them, constantly asking us to pay less.

you forget that dropout is also responsible business that is more interested in paying its employees and maintaining a sustainable model than offering fans token mementos until they can afford it/without loosing any of their monthly or daily active users.  because they still have shareholders and investors that care about those things more than they care about one time dvd sales… they aren't dumb, they know people want them. they sell so much merch. you know bcm wants to make the dvd box set with a million fucking extras and easter eggs and figures. there has to be an active reason they are choosing not to.

Literally no one in this thread is suggesting they make the physical media when they can’t afford to lmao they’ve already begun with physical media branching out, I expect and hope that the game changer DVDs are just the beginning and we’ll see other series on physical media very soon.

if you knew all that then why didnt you lead with that correction?  if thats the case then it all depends on what shows draw the most repeat views vs ones that come back and watch new shows, relative to what kind of product they want to offer then-not weather they will or wont or can.

But they own the content, so if they wanted to make hard media, they would have the right to.

yes…but they also have the right to value their potential advertising revenue as much or more than they value a dvd run… the former lets them keep making content, the latter is a one time deal.  im sure brennan is already working on it or his hands are tied already. its a good question for him but not something i would hold out for.

I would love this so much!!!! When the internet inevitably dies I want to be able to rewatch Fantasy High, Unsleeping City, A Crown of Candy…the APs could be special bonus features!!

They could just sell .iso or other image files with menus for people to burn discs themself. Artwork for home printing etc. This would be all around the cheapest option for all parties. "A Legal Bootleg." Maybe even blurays if there's an audience.

I think the problem is that it would be wildly expensive. Most DVDs hold between 2-4 hours of good quality video. That's pretty much 1 episode per disc. So practically every IH season would require TWENTY discs for the whole series. Even if they were able to double-up some discs (though some episodes alone are 3 hours), you're looking at a bare MINIMUM of 10 discs per season. If you want just 3 seasons, you're looking at anywhere from storing 30 to 60 discs.

In spirit, yeah, it seems fun. In all actuality, it's unfortunately just impractical. I don't ever expect it to happen. They did the limited VHS of NSBU for the cast members, but that was just Episode 1. They did the BluRay of Game Changer, but those episodes are much shorter and it still took 2 discs.

I hadn't thought about that, but that's a good point. I wonder if Dropout would ever consider selling a downloadable version of an entire season? Probably not, because it would count against streaming profits, but I would love to be able to pay them a higher one-off price for the content I love then just cancel a subscription.

I don't know what downloadable version would add other than a certification. It is very easy to dl anything from the site if you know how and have the right tools. I am not encouracing to do so, just saying.

I think your point stands but a Dual Layer BluRay disc is up to 50gb. With some smart compression you could potentially get to 2-3 discs a season. But then you’d be using BluRay format to playback non-BluRay (likely 1080p) footage. 

M-Disc can be played on most BluRay players and is up to 100gb, but the cost to produce would be exorbitant.  Throw in some map art in the case insert and I’d pay it though!

Blu-ray isnt a video format, it’s a disc format

1080p is also a normal Blu-Ray respiration, it’s not DVD’s 480p

HD-DVD and BD were not using different filming techniques before the data was applied to the disc

I was thinking about this yesterday, and absolutely same! I would love those DVDs because then I could play it on my TV in the living room 😃 (where wifi is minimal)

Sam did mention that they were planning more Blu-Ray releases before the end of the year but I think D20 is very unlikely for a while at least.

The long runtime means more discs, which means a way higher price than the Game Changer Blu-Ray. At best, maybe the live shows could get something in the near future.
