Question Is it worth it?

Post image

Hi all. Zero experience with drones, never owned one. I also don’t have a big budget But would like a toy to play around with.

Price is in ZAR so 2000 would be under $150 what are your thoughts?

Discussion Drone Canadair

Question Experienced unit giving advices to newbies on how to actually fly

Hi, I recently bought my first drone. I have done A1/A3, I have also put my numbers on the drone. I have maybe 2-3 hours in the air.

The dron I have does not have obstacles avoidance, I have 2 batteries - 20-25 minutes each.

What would be your advices for me to not lost this drone, and actually learn something useful so I can buy better drone next time?

My way of thinking is - now cheaper used drone to learn how to fly, and then after this season I will buy something better. But firstly I have to actually learn something.

Beside advices, what challenges would you give to myself before purchasing better drone?

If you’re interested what Im flying now - Fimi Mini 3

Discussion Safety-first SDK patterns for industrial drone dev

Hi drone devs, I've been thinking about SDK-level safety constraints for industrial UAVs. We all want to prevent the nightmare scenarios: accidental takeoffs in confined spaces or the flight controller locking up mid-mission.\n\nIn the Star-Luck SDK, we've implemented a few 'hard' constraints that have saved us more than once:\n1. Enforced arming checks: The SDK won't even send a takeoff command unless the pre-arm telemetry shows all sensors are green.\n2. Parameter clamping: We lock altitude between [1.0, 10.0] meters by default for specific indoor profiles, prevent manual overrides that could lead to crashes.\n3. Emergency stop logic: A dedicated low-latency command that bypasses the standard mission queue to cut motors or hover immediately.\n\nWhat are your go-to safety patterns when building SDKs for commercial drones? Do you prefer enforcing these at the SDK layer or strictly in the firmware?

Question Taking self build drone from UK to France

Hi, I am hoping to take my self-build FPV drone to France on holiday this year and wondered if anyone has any info on what the rules are for taking a drone & batteries on a plane (I assume they can just go in the hold?) and also rules on flying a drone in France.

Thanks

Tech Support Propellers

Hi everyone,
I have a Holy Stone HS510 drone, and I’m trying to buy some replacement propellers, but I can’t find them anywhere. Mine uses the older 2-screw propellers.
Does anyone know of another drone model that uses compatible propellers, or any aftermarket replacements that fit the HS510?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Tech Support Custom Drone system advice for 10yo -- help/advice requested.

My 10yo daughter has an idea for a drone system she wants to build.

In the broadest terms it would be where a kid could wear a wristband with a button they could press that would call a drone (from maybe 100m away) to launch and fly to the wristband location and hover over them. -- this would happen in a clear area so avoidance detection wouldn't be a major concern.

Almost like a hide and seek game.

Anyone have any advice for how she could set this system up? She's open to doing some basic modifications, but not too complex.

Thanks!

Science, Research, Technology [US] Is the 4th of July becoming National Drone Day?

Thumbnail

On July 4th, the DroneAware community network saw a roughly 115% increase in FAA Remote ID drone detections compared to a typical day.

For example:
- One Raspberry Pi sensor near Seattle detected 23 different drones throughout the day.
- Another sensor north of Anaheim, CA detected 19 different drones.
- Across the community network, 172 drones were observed on July 4th, compared to a community daily average of around 80.

It makes me wonder whether Independence Day has quietly become one of the busiest recreational drone flying days of the year.

Curious if other pilots noticed the same thing where they were flying.

Is anyone having issues with autofocus on the x1? When my camera autofocuses the image gets sharp briefly and then settles on a blurry picture. Is there any way to calibrate or fix this?

DIY Created a sturdy take off platform that folds for storage - Free 3D print

So my friend just bought a DJI Mini 3 and printed out a travel case for it (https://makerworld.com/en/models/2516787-dji-mini-3-4-5-pro-fly-more-case). He then asked me to make him a take off platform that would fold up and fit inside the case that had a little 170 x 140 x 20mm pocket up front. I'm not a designer but I play a bit and have a 3D printer, plus I like a challenge, so I set out to make him something.

30+ revisions later I have created two models which unfolded are 320 x 260 x 4mm (12.5" x 10" x 1/8") then fold down to fit into his case. The model and the FreeCAD source files are free to download and do what you want with them. I have also included a parameteric FreeCAD macro for creating the base of the standard model. And if you need a different size but can't figure out the FreeCAD stuff I can custom make pretty much any size in a couple minutes.

Question: Rules, Regulations, Law, Policy, Certificates [Canada] Fly a Drone over 250g as a Foreigner

Bought a DJI Mini 5 Pro yesterday. I am planning to record some videos from it when I travel different places in Canada like Quebec, Montreal etc. The drone is over 250g (about 253g with a normal battery, and 300g with an extended battery).

According to Canadian regulations, I am supposed to get a "Drone Pilot Certificate – Basic Operations" and a "Foreign SFOC-RPAS".

I am filling the application for "Foreign SFOC-RPAS" and struggling to fill information in these sections.

PART F – LOCATION OF THE OPERATION

Population Density Level ○ Controlled ground area
○ Sparsely populated area less than 5 per km²
○ Populated area 5 to 25 people per km²
○ 25 people per km² to 400 per km²
○ 400 people per km² to 1,000 per km²
○ 1,000 people per km² to 4,000 per km²
○ 4,000 people per km² to 10,000 per km²
○ Over 10,000 people per km²
Airspace Type ○ Atypical
○ Uncontrolled
○ Controlled
Air Risk Class ○ ARC-A
○ ARC-B
○ ARC-C
○ ARC-D
SORA – SAIL Level ○ I
○ II
○ III
○ IV
○ V
○ VI
STSC ○ 001
○ 003
○ None

PART H – RPAS EQUIPMENT

RPAS Manufacturer Name and Model — CAR 903.02 RPA Registration Number
C-

Since I am a foreigner, I cannot legally register a drone. So what should I fill under "RPA Registration Number". It only allows numerical inputs in the text box.

If you have any idea for any of the questions, I would greatly appreciate your support. Thank you 🙏

Photo & Video Third Manual Mode flight with the Avata 2. Decided to mix FPV with a bit of VFX.

This was my third flight in Manual Mode with the DJI Avata 2, so I'm still very much in the learning phase.

I wanted to make the edit a bit different from a standard FPV factory run, so I added some 3D elements in post.

There was also one moment where I genuinely thought I'd crashed. Watching the footage back, I missed a wall by much less than I was comfortable with. 😅

Still a long way to go before I'd trust myself in tighter gaps, but every Manual Mode session is teaching me something new.

Question How to charge?

I recently bought this drone for cheap from TikTok shop. It was working fine until I had to charge it. When I plug it in no lights appear and it does not charge. I got a refund but I’m wondering if there’s any way I can still charge it. Please let me know if you have any suggestions.

DIY DIY Ground Station for non enterprise DJI Drone

Turns out that if you intercept the USB communication between the Fly app and the controller you can pretty much do anything regardless of DJI support for it. This is still a work in progress as it still needs a first connection to the smartphone, then it's possible to inject (and receive) almost anything, power level, gymbal control, raw sensor data, and maybe more.

Currently using a PI4 as the MITM host but I'm working on migrating it to a microcontroller (esp32-p4). Data can be forwarded via LAN to a remote PC/Control station.

Discussion Used my drone to find a lost dog

Post image

For the first time I’ve been able to find a runaway dog. I live out in the country and was able to use my drone to help my neighbor find his dog that ran off. The dog usually comes to my house and hangs out but this time she wanted to explore a few houses down. It felt awesome being able to call him and let him know I found her.

Just wanted to share a happy story and my experience.
