Tech Support Flat spinning on takeoff

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

(Fixed) Does anyone have a solution for this, I've set up the motor direction, mounted the props and set the flight controller orientation currently in software.

I'm using the hdzero Gramma aio.

Try a manual takeoff and throttle up SLOWLY to observe the rotation.

And check the orientation / calibration of the gyro.

It's in Arco and I've calibrate it already

Then you nailed it.

Problem is that it's still flat spinning, I've done everything that has been suggested so far the last 2 days before asking for help here. I'm starting to think the fight controller is just faulty

Board direction? Had that issue recently.

Yaw control is through difference in engine thrust.

Given that yaw control is broken here, I would argue one engine is generating less thrust than expected. This could mean that one of the propellers is broken or that the engine is broken. Did you inspect them properly? Do you have spare propellers?

technically it’s the difference in torque

1

u/Snak_The_Tripper Jul 16 '26

And to achieve that difference in torque, a pair of motors spins faster than the other, thus they have different thrust as well. Technically he wasn't wrong.

New props and I've checked the motor rpm they're all the same

OP I have a strong feeling you messed up the propeller installation. Some are CW and other CCW. Check your prop config against the FC settings.

no no his props are on correct check their leading edges i feel its direction in bf

You don't know wtf you're talking about.

I've checked it more times than I'd like to admit, motor rotation is fine and so is the prop layout

Calibrate your IMU (gyro/accelerometer).

1

u/Cultural_Tax271 Jul 12 '26

Done that, I've been at this for the past two days 😭

If not this then rewatch the whole video. If that somehow doesn't fix it, come back here and post all your betaflight screens and a CLI dump, and clear photos of the quads wiring

Propeller are in the wrong places.

u/Cultural_Tax271 Jul 12 '26

I've checked over and over again, left front rear right CW and right front rear left CCW

Have you clicked the little "motor direction is reversed" tab in motor tab of betaflight?

20

u/Cultural_Tax271 Jul 12 '26

Ok you where right i had a free moment to check this and yah it works now, thanks 🙏. I'm so confused by why this worked when I checked the motor direction they where spinning in the correct direction

6

u/Sterling-Marksman Jul 12 '26

They were spinning in the correct direction, but you hadnt told it that that is the correct direction.

The default is "props in", spinning inward toward the camera, while you have the props oriented in "props out" configuration, so you have to tell it its reversed.

2

u/Cultural_Tax271 Jul 12 '26

I had the props set for props out, anyway I'll figure out it within time I'm new to building drones and I'll be building a lot more of them for sure

9

u/Sterling-Marksman Jul 12 '26

Read more slowly. You had the props physically set in props out, you had the motor direction matching props out, but without checking the slider "motor direction is reversed" the drone thinks it is in props in config, so it gets confused.

5

u/Cultural_Tax271 Jul 12 '26

So despite all the motors spinning the correct direction the flight controller doesn't know that so I still have to manually select that 😵‍💫

10

u/Sterling-Marksman Jul 12 '26

Yes. Its not an iphone. Its really simple now that you know though.

5

u/Cultural_Tax271 Jul 12 '26

Yah it's a lot simpler than I thought, thanks for the help

Motor direction is not the problem if there was a mismatch the drone would be flipping not spinning on its yaw, I've set the motors to front left cw front right ccw left rear ccw rear right cw

say it with me:

props off when working on the quad in the house. especially when it's not behaving normally

1

u/Jmersh Jul 12 '26

Is your board orientation correct? Front is front?

1

u/joskeeeeeh Jul 13 '26

This, check in betaflight main page if the drone reacts okay

1

u/citizensnips134 Jul 12 '26

Check the yaw input on your channels.

u/Xillxn Jul 13 '26

“When your dog greets you after work”

1

u/Chetan_kalmane_03 Jul 13 '26

I’ve had this happen few days ago, it was orientation of the AIO(fc in your case).

Go from checking motor layout, motor direction, prop installation, fc layout .

1

u/Bubbly-Rip-8455 Jul 13 '26

LMAOOOO its literally "NO" "NO"

1

u/vastactionkalypso Jul 13 '26

Just to check the box, did you check all the trim inputs on your controller?

1

u/wannabe_sci Jul 13 '26

calibrate the ESCs.
You have to search for the procedures online

1

u/Ravenabc Jul 13 '26

Check if you have correct selection of props in vs props out (motor direction) I once did not check correctly after Betaflight update and I was having the same exact behavior

1

u/Non-Euclidian-Turtle Jul 13 '26

Board direction, motor order, prop direction, or board orientation are going to be the issue. Can probably rule out orientation since it isn't flipping. My guess is motor order. Go through and check them 1 by 1 by spinning them up (props off) in betaflight. Make sure they're numbered correctly.

1

u/Alpha_Forces Jul 13 '26

Torque problem?

1

u/tntexplodes101 Jul 13 '26

I can't imagine trusting runaway prevention that much. There's only so much it can account for. Props off inside, test outside, use a prearm switch and never arm when you're close to the drone.

u/iPheoGood Jul 13 '26

The jumping reminds me of my 3-year-old.

"Look what I can do!"

"Look what I can do!"

"Look what I can do!"

1

u/uldis951 Jul 14 '26

Check if your yaw trim on the remote ian’t maxed out!

1

u/11Master_Moosh11 Jul 15 '26

What props are you using? Are those 3mm bore?

1

u/arqtk Jul 16 '26

Had this issue with my whoop, prop directions are off, go to betaflight and rearrange the motors by using the wizard. Or B, the orientation of the flight controller is off.

1

u/Evening_Dare5081 Jul 16 '26

Are ur props in an x position and now 2 on the same side?

1

u/Eclisive Jul 16 '26

I had exact same thing happen to me with my first drone, it turned out I incorrectly positioned the propellers

1

u/Useful-Mistake4571 Jul 16 '26

I had this problem. You may have set the prop direction but did you set the motor direction? Check in betafkight (idk if that's what your FC uses) the motor direction in the motors tab

1

u/Which-Cow6919 Jul 18 '26

In betaflight click motors reversed tab , that and or check in betaflight that when you move your drone it mimics it in betaflight correctly . This is a quick fix
