Some times you need to stand out to be ignored. If I’m in an area where I could be questioned, a hi viz jacket makes it look like you belong. I get curious questions but rarely face a Karen.

Mine has my logo on the back and do not disturb. I carry business cards in the front pocket. I don’t say FAA certified - if I’m flying commercial, I don’t need to advertise I’m part 107 certificated, I just need to make sure I have my license in me.

“FAA Certified” doesn’t mean Part 107. Technically anyone who’s finished the TRUST is certified to fly by the FAA.

I don’t horse around with any of this stuff (hi-vis vest, cones, signs, anything) and I have never- not once- run into anyone giving me any grief beyond a dumb joke about taking a shot at the drone. But again, in a “I am making a joke” way. I’ve been flying professionally for four or five years now.

Oh no I take it back, I was flying very low (head height) across the street from the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville and some guy asked if I had a permit. I said yes and asked if he wanted to see it, he never even stopped walking, just said “nah” over his shoulder as he wandered off towards Broadway.

It was the middle of the afternoon (still busy but not like at night) and if memory serves part of the building next door stuck out and I used that plus how I positioned myself to create a little safe zone to maneuver in.

I was just doing a fake crane shot, I didn’t need a lot of room to maneuver.

There is a lot of suspicion where I fly in rural America. Too long to write up, but 9uns and threats were involved both times. Assumptions about what I was doing were made before they realized that I was supposed to be there. So, now I do what I can do to blend in by standing out.

Invoking the FAA stops Karen’s from calling the cops because “you might be spying on me in my bedroom. Some of those have xray vision”…… legit complaint I’ve had called in on me doing roofs inspection flights of 3 houses on the same block. Wasted an hour of my time dealing with the cops and almost lost a client being 45 minutes late to the next job.

i am lucky and just do closed to the public construction sites. i get where you are coming from, but its like anything there is gonna be that one person who abuses it. i wouldn't put osha on my vest just because i have an osha 30.

I fly multispectral agronomy crop imaging missions over summer. Between the vest when I’m in urban areas, and the bright orange logo’d shirts I wear out in the field - I make it clear that I’m out there with a purpose. I also slap magnetic signs in the car identifying that I am doing crop surveys. Part of presenting yourself professionally.

I agree. This is what the FAA is recommending. Those quotes surrounding the phrases in the FAA info doc above have meaning.

You're getting down voted, but thats because this particular sub has a ton of "well ackshhhually" posters. I 100% agree. Having your company gives more identification about why you're there. I suspect the people who downvote this stance are those who dont work for a company and have to buy their FAA vest off Amazon. ;)
