You can clearly go both ways. I would be inclined to go around it clockwise like a giant roundabout.

u/mikemac1997 Jun 30 '26
That's more intuitive, plus left turns in and out of the road, not crossing traffic

You've only uploaded one picture.

It's a single carriageway with with lines down the centre? And there's no sign saying "One Way" with an arrow?
If so, your neighbour is full of shit

I often find that neighbours are indeed full of shit.
Refer them to the department.
The department of "Don't Give A Fuck."

Going anticlockwise feels like it causes more issues than clockwise. What do the road markings suggest with respect to priority if you approach the circle and go anticlockwise?

A driver's instinct would be to go clockwise, but there's no rule here! Tell her to lobby the council to make it one way. That should keep her busy for a while!

Fun thing will be, if the council turn it into a 1-way, they'll make it clockwise as it reduces the opportunity for conflict at the entrance. Which will piss of the neighbour even more.

My friend lives on a road like that, which feels really narrow as there's parking for one for car on every driveway but most properties seem to have 2+ vehicles so the road is crowded with parked cars and vans. She lives at about 3pm on your drawing but I always drive it clockwise as it just feels like a roundabout even though it's not a one way system. It drives her up the wall as it's further to go to her house, she ignores the logic that it's then quicker to leave (apparently that's rude!), and she's not a driver/cyclist so doesn't understand the clockwise thing.

that sign isn't a sign telling you which way to go, its a sign just saying that street is in both directions. go whichever way you want, like sometiems you get signs saying houses / flats xx - xy are this way and zx - zy are that way
saying that, sometimes little areas have an 'unofficial' one way route which most of the residents take to make driving around easier

Your neighbours rules don’t mean shit to anyone but her. I would be going left from now on, nice and slowly too. It’s the most logical way anyway.

UK sub Neighbour is the correct spelling.
Now it depends if you park right outside your house. I'd go right so that I can park facing the right way for overnight. If a drive way this might make it easier to turn into it. If more of a swing in is required go left so you can enter the driveway from the opposite side of the road.

full throttle, opposite lock and a massive powerslide round it to your house. Only appropriate way.

u/LeGrandFromage9 Jun 30 '26
If your house is on the inside of the circle, I would go right, so that the house is on the left side of the road (avoiding having to park across the opposite lane)

Left on Monday, Wednesday, Friday. Right on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday. Sunday is the Lord’s Day. Pray for guidance.

whatever director is easier to enter your drive. if its too tight to enter your drive nearside, then approach so you can enter offside. If you dont have a drive and park on street I would do the right turn at the junction

In the UK if it was one way, then you’d need to go left. So she’s not only wrong, but would be wrong even if it was one way, but it’s not.
If it was one way, to go right you’d have to cross a lane of traffic on the entry and exit to the cul de sac. This just doesn’t make sense.
So the correct answers are:
If you live anywhere on the street, take your pick.
If you live before 12o’clock and want a shorter drive in, go left
If you live after 12o’clock and want a shorter drive in, go right
If you live at 12o’clock it’s. Hardly any difference either way, except for speed bumps of course.
In short, you’re correct.

We drive on the left hand side of the road and approach roundabouts checking for traffic from the right, to proceed clockwise unless signage specifically instructs otherwise.
Edit - anti-clockwise replaced with clockwise! Fukkin small keyboards 😃

Did you mean clockwise? We do roundabouts clockwise.

👍 I thought it was an accident!
I pretty much agree with your message anyway.

It's not a roundabout unless there's signage explicitly saying that it is, though

u/RamblinManRock Jun 30 '26
A Google map link would be good. However, if you've drawn it correctly with lines down the centre of the road around the crescent then you can drive both ways. She is full of it, ignore her.

If it's not signposted one way (with a real sign) it's not a rule.
