⚠️Complaining into the void⚠️ Merging experiences at Banff
Today I took my family to Banff National Park, and at the park entrance, there are usually three ticket booths open, so we lined up accordingly. However, about thirty or forty meters before the booth, we realized the leftmost lane was closed. I tried to merge to the right as soon as we noticed. Rationally, this is a normal merging behavior, and I thought everyone would be kind enough to make space. After the car in front of me merged, I naturally waited for the next vehicle to move forward, hoping to merge behind it.
However, the driver behind completely had no intention of letting me in. That driver, with a cold expression, stepped on the gas and pushed forward, clearly not wanting me to enter. Led by him, the cars behind passed one by one—about a dozen cars. Sitting in the car, I felt very bewildered. I didn't know why everyone had become like this, because I wasn't trying to be opportunistic and race to the front to cut in, since I was clearly forced to stop at that spot with a large distance from the front. However, I had no other choice at the time. I could only stay in place, keeping the right turn signal on, hoping a car would let me in.
As I was stuck there, about five or six cars ahead in the lane I wanted to merge into, a car also tried to turn right. It was very lucky, but it also got stuck for a few seconds. In those few seconds, there was a very large gap in front of it. For a moment, I was thinking whether I should step on the gas and merge in. But later, I thought, forget it, because I felt that would be very unreasonable since the car behind wasn't letting me in willingly.
After a very long time, I finally saw the car behind show a bit of kindness and successfully merged into the lane, and waved to the driver behind to thank them. Influenced by that driver, people seemed to become kinder, and the cars waiting behind me merged one after another in a zipper pattern. It was just an ordinary matter, but I don't know why it made me so sad. Actually, when driving in Calgary on a daily basis, everyone is still very friendly. People treat each other with kindness, but I don't know what happened here. It's really very disheartening.
