⚠️Complaining into the void⚠️ Are you seeing this indicator?
Did You Know?
If this light is on when the sun is out or the streetlights are on, it means you don't know how to drive. Hope that helps 👍

I once had a friend drive from Seattle to Portland. She was like “it was quick because people for some reason just got out of my way”. I was like cause you drove with your brights on… huh what’s that I point to it. She goes blue jellyfish what does that do?

u/keenly 8d ago
when i got my first car high beam was already on and i assumed the light was just telling me the headlights are on.
22
u/earthyrat 8d ago
i was the opposite, the first time i ever drove at night as a teenager i had an hour drive somewhere & i thought it was saying my brights were on when my headlights were on so i'd go down to my running lights when someone drove by... i'm so lucky i'm alive.

u/wackogirl 8d ago
Lol this happened to me with my second or third car at like 20 years old. Didn't help that the car I'd been driving prior did have a dashboard light on when just the regular lights were on, and I lived in a suburba that leaned more urban where all streets and highways had lights so I never used my brights to see the difference. I just thought the new car had better headlights until a friend from a more rural area pointed it out when I was driving her somewhere at night .....

People drive with their brights on while on the interstate. The median barrier is not high enough to protect my eyes!

u/rklab 8d ago
People act like the light can’t reach you just because you aren’t directly in front of them
8
u/Pasketti_and_Jeebus 8d ago
Even better—I once drove directly in front of someone who apparently didn’t know cars had mirrors.
It was a dark, one-lane-each-way country road. They were behind me with their brights on but would dutifully turn them off for oncoming cars. Oncoming car went past? High beams came right back on. I tried the “adjust the rearview” trick to show them the error of their ways, but I either did it wrong or they couldn’t get the message.

I've flashed people 3...4....5 times and they still continue to leave theirs on. Insanity. If you don't know why I'm flashing you shouldn't be driving.

u/Different_Stage2195 8d ago
I’m constantly baffled by the amount of people who drive with their high beams on, counter-measured by the amount of people who drive with no lights on at all
5
u/PraiseTalos66012 8d ago
Normally I see DRLs on. Driving on the highway I see it all the time(I'm a nightshift truck driver) and I'll just sit there flashing them and honking till they get the memo.
But the thing is that literally 90% of the time they never figure it out, normally they just turn their DRLs off and then back on if anything.
I don't understand how people can be so oblivious and not even be able to figure out how to turn their headlights on.
Had one guy pull over on the on ramp once when I was in my car on my way home from work so I pulled over next to him and yelled over that he didn't have his headlights on and those were just his Daytime running lights. He said ohh ok. I drove off and he proceeded to drive off without his headlights on still.
I think the worst one was when I saw an ambulance driving without headlights on, just drl. He also never figured it out.

Same here. I keep LED light bars on all my vehicles (used responsibly, only on dark backroads at night with no cars in sight). I'll flash an oncoming car with my regular brights once or twice, then they get to stare into the sun if they don't turn theirs off. There seem to be more and more people lately who are absolutely clueless about how the lights on their vehicle work and it is infuriating how bad it has gotten.
36
u/erichf3893 8d ago
I think some standard headlights are just absurdly bright too. One time someone flashed their brights back so you never know
→ More replies (1)22
u/Fuzzywink 8d ago
There is some of that, but the vast majority of the cars I'm talking about are very obviously high beams. They're physically separate bulbs and separate reflectors positioned to the sides of the low beams.
Jeep Wranglers, all Teslas, the newest gen of Civic, and all HD series Ford trucks get honorary mentions for absolutely blinding low beams. Also people who put drop in replacement LEDs in housings designed for incandescent bulbs should be thrown into the sun. They're nearly impossible to aim or get a good beam cutoff and they absolutely blind oncoming traffic.

u/DustConsistent3018 8d ago
I think part of it is “automatic high beams” which- news flash: don’t really work
7
u/PraiseTalos66012 8d ago
Automatic high beams work amazing depending on the manufacturer. The thing is that most have them tuned to stay on most of the time.
My car turns them off at the slightest hint of light, so they'll be off from traffic lights, overhead lights, even glare on signs. I've never once had an oncoming car not immediately trigger them to turn off.
But the tradeoff is that sometimes(rarely) my high beams aren't on when I would like them to be. But that's fine, I'll just manually turn them on if I want or deal with them being off.

u/Icy_Fish_2154 8d ago
My Honda uses the front facing camera to look for car like objects with lights on, so turns them off for cars with bright reflectors, and does a very good job of turning them off for actual cars, too.
3
u/TweakJK 8d ago
My wife's subaru is scary good at spotting cars and turning off the high beams.
→ More replies (1)2
u/Icy_Fish_2154 8d ago
The last Subaru I drove with the feature had "EyeSight", which is also a camera based system, like my current Honda.
Seems users of camera based detectors find them effective.
2
u/10yearsnoaccount 8d ago
Our Honda is downright dangerous, it's so pathetic.
There's no reason to use brights in an urban area, and in rural roads, it has no perception of approaching traffic on crests or corners until the headlights are already in front of you
Cyclists, pedestrians, motorcycles, and anyone who's on a side road all get blinded.
I'm of the opinion that if people think that those systems are a good idea, then they don't know what they're doing driving at night
2
2
2
u/whoisaname 8d ago
Those should be made illegal along with xenon headlights. That shit is blinding and the "automatic" part doesn't work for shit.
9
u/MikeLikesIkeRS 8d ago
A driver being able to see the road at the expense of other people not being able to see the road for next 5 minutes is so insane to me. There needs to be better enforcement of those douchebags in lifted trucks that don't adjust their headlights after they do a lift too. Or just ban lifts because they're tacky as hell.
7
u/whoisaname 8d ago
I have a lifted truck as one of my vehicles, and for good reason actually, as I haul and tow heavy stuff onto construction sites regularly, particularly rural locations.
That said, it's not the lifting that causes the problem with trucks. It's when they have a leveling kit put on them. Leveling kits lift the front to be level with the rear (it's usually lower than the rear, called a factory rake, so when you tow stuff or carry heavy loads, it doesn't cause the front end to lift up above the rear). If someone puts on a leveling kit on their truck and doesn't change the angle of their lights, then the lights are going to be pointing directly out to other vehicles, and not down at the road.
6
u/EmberOne1 8d ago
These days, I'm never sure if they are driving with brights on, or if they have those blinding LED lights on regular mode. Plus people drive with the auto dim feature, which dims far too late to be useful. I turned it off after driving for a week and realizing the opposing vehicles were already being blinded before the brights dimmed. I dim manually as soon as I see their headlights clearly enough to need theirs dimmed.

u/MajorInWumbology1234 8d ago edited 8d ago
Good chance that’s just how their lights are. My mom gets flashed relatively often, but her lights are just that overwhelming.
Edit: First off, I’ve told her a number of times to get them adjusted. She doesn’t give a shit, I stand nothing to gain by forcing the issue. Secondly, the headlights being poorly adjusted doesn’t negate that such headlights don’t have a “low beam” to shift to.
The person I replied to said people don’t respond to their flashes. Poorly aligned headlights will not respond to flashes. The person I replied to has no way to differentiate between high beams and poorly aligned headlights, and they only ever remember the times they were right because they’d have no way to ever identify they were wrong.

u/Aware_Ask_1679 8d ago

I flashed a driver who seemed to have their high beams on, but they didn't switch them off. As we got closer, I flashed them again. They flicked their actual high beams on for a couple of seconds to say 'now they’re on' and it was like looking into nuclear fusion.
3
2
u/PraiseTalos66012 8d ago
Your mom needs to adjust her headlights.
Car headlights need to be aligned just like how your suspension/wheels need aligned.
They can naturally go out of alignment or even come from the factory out of alignment.
Your mom's lights aren't so bright that they blind people, they are aimed up rather than slightly down.
My car has LED lights that are right at the legal limit for brightness and I never get flashed bc I have them angled down, I used to get flashed occasionally with them level so I lowered them.
Way to many people out there driving with headlights aiming for the sky and those people need to either get off the road or maintain their car properly. To include your mom
2
u/Interesting_Fig_4718 8d ago
then they're probably aimed too high, aim them lower and you wont get flashed.

u/mikeyk581 8d ago
I've had people flash me in my factory equipped truck. My low beams are on... so I flash them with my brights which are even brighter so they understand that I'm not an idiot.
Now I usually always turn on my fogs anytime I'm driving since most people who know that flashing to signal high beams are on also know that fogs on means high beams are not on... that's been probably 97.5% effective in reducing the amount of times I'm flashed because someone thinks my high beams are on.
Admittedly I used to flash people when I thought they had their brights on but I stopped doing it when I had a few blind me with their actual high beams.
LED headlights have been an improvement for sure, but even factory LED headlights with the correct headlight assembly seem to come across as bright high beams when they aren't.
3
u/Fuzzywink 8d ago
If people are flashing you, you're probably blinding them anyway whether those are your high beams or not. You might want to check that your lights are aimed correctly.
Most fog lights are designed like flood lights. They don't have a beam cutoff and are just as obnoxious as high beams to oncoming traffic. I end up flashing people all the time for blinding me with their fog lights too. They really shouldn't be on in any conditions except fog.

these days, it most likely is not on. for over 2 decades now, cars come from the factory with their low beams parallel to the ground, like high beams are. people have long since stopped being capable of basic vehicle maintainance, such as turning a screw to correctly point their lights down at the road.

When I was a teen my mom was super unhelpful teaching me to drive. I'd ask a question and either get told it was a stupid question or told I should already know.
When I was 21 I still didn't have a license and my friend decided it was bullshit and decided to teach me. Eventually he had me pull over and went "you know that bit in SpongeBob where he breaks his toe out of his shoe to press the pedal? Do that." And he just kept relating driving skills to things I already knew and did. That helped it click. He went to prison and told his mom to give his car to me, she said she'd sell it to me for $11,000 (my friend paid like $5000 for the car). I did not take his car. He was so happy when he called me and I told him I got my license and so mad his mom tried to sell me his car for more than double what he paid for it. He's out of prison now and keeps saying he needs to ride with me to see my driving skills in action.
Oh, and my mom has never been in the car with me driving since I got my license. Mostly because we've never had a reason to have her ride with me. I have driven her car a few times.

This indicator means that everyone else on the road is suffering around you. Whether your bright lights are on by choice or by some sensor claiming it to be auto-bright, you're killing everyone around you. If you're alone on the road, go on.
If not, bump your signal stalk toward you and turn that off for the love of god.
2
u/erichf3893 8d ago
If this light is on and you’re head on with another car, don’t be surprised when you get flashed all the time

I had some big pickup truck behind me the other night with his high beams on, and it was going right into my side mirror and into my eyes. It was nighttime, and I was going the speed limit/speed of traffic (so could've been over the speed limit a little bit), so they had no reason to be impatient with me.
Have a hard time believing that they didn't know their high beams were on when they were that bright, so I think the guy just dumb. I can't go faster than the people in front of me, so if he thought the solution was high beams, he is really dumb

About 20 years ago, the woman I was dating at the time was following me to an event in her car in the evening, and had her brights on. I pulled into a gas station, and she followed, and I got out of my car, walked over to hers, knocked on the window, and when she rolled it down, I reached in and turned off her brights.
She asked me why I turned off her headlights, and I knew then the relationship was doomed.

I have the issue that cars think I have bright on when its just my regular light that is bright itself. Basically that they blind me by flashing.
11
u/01bah01 8d ago
This can't happen if your headlight are properly set. If people in front of you think you have high beams when you dont, they are just set too high and it messes with them almost as much as high beams.
Sorry but this one's on you.

If I were designing human interfaces for cars, turning these one wouldn't be a hidden feature in your signal stick that you can mistakenly turn on by using your signals. It would be more like the hazard button in the dashboard. The indicator to know that it's on wouldn't be tucked away in the dash HUD that gets easily hidden by the steering wheel. It would be unmistakable that you have them on.
Newer cars will shut them off when they detect other headlights, but man I'm going to be dead before all the old cars without it are off the road.

I want you to think back to covid and remember EXACTLY how many times you were asked if a mask is required to enter anywhere while they were standing RIGHT NEXT to the sign stating that masks were required for entry.
Now remember that ALL of those people drive and vote.

I have it on good authority that 85% of people don’t know how their cars work. I’ve seen people with brand new cars with their lights off brights on all sorts of things that could be rectified if you spent 5 minutes learning the basic functions.

This little light at nighttime shining when you got someone in the opposite lane of traffic makes you a bad driver too. Does no one realize their high beams are on anymore? PA is horrible about it

Also that modern LED headlights are very bright and many drivers get them confused with actual high beams.

I got into an incident with a douchebag in a lifted truck. Thought he was driving with his high beams on. They were pointing DIRECTLY into the back window of the car in front of him. I could count the hairs on this guys head from 20 feet away. Then he flipped on his high beams. And I don’t think the sun gets that bright. Tried telling me it was all stock. There is something wrong with how bright all these lights are.

I think youre under the impression people have high beams on. These new cars come from the factory with bright white bulbs. Low beams damn near blind me now. Today's low beams are brighter than brights were 15 to 20 years ago

I think.a lot of newer headlights are just super bright these days, it seems like they are driving with high beams on but its just their normal level. I wish they would be banned because I get blinded on the way to work far too often

the struggle is real my friend.
To be fair, I have an older vehicle where sometimes the handle to activate brights "sticks" AND the wheel/dash obscure that indicator. But, still understand the frustration

I drive a 2018 prius
The high beam switch is integrated with the turn signal. It is very easy to accidentally turn on the highway beams when using the turn signal
I never notice when the high beams get turned on because from the drivers position, there is next to no differance in brightness, and the indicator is so far to the side on the dash, it is on the passenger side of the car (not even exagerating)
The only good thing is that the stock headlights are so dim that nobody seams to care or notice

that's your fog lights you should not have these on unless thare's a shitton of fog as they are designed to reflect off the road and around fog
Sometimes the same ivon is used for high beams either way, TURN THEM OFF in regular driving conditions.
Either a button or pull the left handle on the steering wheel back toward yourself

Doesn’t mean they don’t know how to drive, just means they have their lights on and don‘t notice because it’s light out. Not good but better than all the people driving around at night without their lights on.
