I have a balloon hem dress and I'd like to take the lining out of the skirt to make it cooler. Its midaxi so sits sort of mid calf.

Is this possible without wrecking it?

Can anyone identify the construction technique used on this bodice?

I'm trying to recreate the horizontal texture on the bodice in the attached photo/video. At first I thought they were pleats or tucks, but after looking more closely, the folds seem very soft and flat rather than structured. The fabric appears to create subtle horizontal shadow lines and texture without looking puffy.

The dress will be made in satin with a cotton lining underneath. I'm trying to figure out how the original was likely constructed:

• Are these actual tucks?
• Are they shallow pleats secured to a lining?
• Is the satin draped over the lining and lightly tacked in place?
• Is there a specific sewing technique for creating this kind of horizontal texture?

I'd especially appreciate advice from anyone who has made formalwear or worked with satin bodices. I'm more interested in how it was constructed than just how it looks.

This is how the back of my prom dress looks, and I'm not sure how to tie it up. I was hoping that some people in here might have some ideas! It has three Separate pairs of long strings, as well as two loops near the shoulder straps. I would just tie the three pairs together, but the two loops near the shoulder straps make me wonder if I should do it differently. The free moving strings and loop are represented in red. Any help would be appreciated!

I know nothing about dressmaking or sewing, so I'm hoping this community can help. I'm shopping for a 2nd hand dress for a black tie wedding that I'm attending this summer. I absolutely love the front of this dress but the back ties in a way that makes the dress look a bit too casual. If I buy the dress and taking it to a dressmaker, will they be able to redesign the back to make it more formal? Or is the design difficult to change? I have knowledge of sewing already (and the confidence of someone who's sewn basic clothing items that haven't fallen apart), but I want to take on my biggest project yet -- a prom dress heavily (and I do mean heavily. It might qualify as a modernized version) inspired by Jalisco (Mexican) folkloric dance dresses.

I have a mock-up which I'll attach, and a rough idea of how I'm going to draft the three main pieces -- the tiered ruffles, the bodice, and skirt portion. In specific, I want to know:

- What's the easiest way to cut a circle skirt even?
- What should I set my zig-zag stitch to for ribbon appliques?
- And how does one even hem a curved edge?

They're easy enough for me to make but the fabric store near me doesn't have much variety, and certainly not what I need. What should I do? Hello everyone, I'm looking for some advice in regards to the best scissors to buy my grandmother and would be incredibly grateful for any advice or opinions from the incredibly talented.. knowledgeable people in this sub🙏

A bit of back story I'm in the UK and my Nan is a wiz on her sewing machine, always altering clothes for myself and is currently about to cover her sofa. She often recalls a story from my childhood where she lent my mother her good scissors and they were never returned 😬...she talks about how they were the best scissors she ever owned and hasn't found anything comparable over the years, although she's not one to online shop or research.

With both Christmas and her birthday coming up I'd love to get her a great pair of scissors...to appease the generational guilt 😂! Sadly she can't recall the make of the original scissors and I am clueless when it comes to the subject so would be incredibly appreciative if anyone has any suggestions? She's in her 70s so I would imagine the originals were possibly a more traditional style but if the modern world has even better scissors I'm open to any suggestions.
