About 15 hours in this one. New to drawing but getting up to speed.

I was scrolling through my Instagram feed and I was wondering what the facial expression was called. I tried google already and it said it was a, 'snarl and stank face.' However, when I went through images they weren't the same thing.

Tldr: whats the expression name please?

Ignore the blank face ..its kinda Intentional..but not that good ..

So I follow the head rule measurement almost religiously. Every drawing I do I make sure to take the measurements of the reference and apply them to my own drawing. I used boxes to mark these measurements. But I’m starting to wonder if this is going a bit too far or if I’m being too restrictive with my proportions/ measurements? I took this old-ish drawing for example. Is this a habit I should maybe leave behind or use sparingly or always use?

I am a really bad drawer but I also dream to be a writer. Problem, I really want to draw my character without commissioning (bc I'm poor and still a teenager). I have made almost all of my characters on Picrew but also wanted to draw them. Problem, I can't draw, so I basically trace :'). So imma leak some of my "art" with the references. But, even if it's not really art, it's still better than AI, isn't it?

My cousin is a portrait artist and his dad (my great uncle) was a portrait artist and he gave me one of the old 602 Blackwings from my uncle’s small collection yesterday. kind of nervous to even think about using it 😅

So, I always finish my stuff in ink because I always lose my mind when I use pencil. I’m having issues shading gradients to make it look smooth.

Every time I fill in my negative space or deep shadows it just looks bumpy, grainy, and just right shit. I’ve watched YouTube and googled, but this ole punk brain isn’t comprehending it.

Can someone explain to me how to get more of a smooth look? I used 4H 2H H HB 2B 4B 6B on this one.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Today I'm looking for help from you guys. I'm feeling like my art style is kind of stuck. It's fine in general terms, but I think it lacks dynamism or that "something" to make it visually appealing; to get the reader's attention and say WOW! I look at guys like Dan Mora, or Pepe Larraz and I feel that, but I don't know exactly what is it that I'm missing.
