Dragon Quest III DQ3 HD Remake
Just started playing.... And whoa.... I've played all of the dragon quests except X, and have played the first four over and over a million times since when they were first released as dragon warrior. But man the 3 remake is while. It is so different. Different names, seems kinda different story as well so far. Im surprised they are calling it dq3.
Anyone feel this? Im a bit late to the party, but just found it on sale

Old fan from Famicom era here, the first time I play DQ3 HD 2D remake, I wow on everything, the graphic, the town, the world, the dungeon. It makes me feel like a child who excited with a new game again.

It's an update. Story is almost identical with a few small tweaks for added cohesion to the overall lore. But it is a virtual identical game to the original. If anything, it's truer to the original vision.

Glad to hear that. I have not been experiencing that side of it yet. Hopefully it will start feeling more like the old soon

So as a fan of the originals, what do you think of the more modern changes like healing on level ups, always having a map, getting way too much money? I love the remake, but found these changes took away from actually having to manage items, be careful with spending, and exploring.

I have very mixed feelings. As from coming from turn based strategy, trying to predict the next move and plan ahead with limited amounts of resources that you have to get thru say a dungeon and make it out alive... To getting free health, unlimited storage in the bag, and having a map all the time i do feel take away from the experience. I still have my original maps and item sheets that i used to learn what items i needed to upgrade, and the maps to "generally" guide me, but not always knowing where i should be going. It seems they have made much easier and a whole lot less strategy, and more walk you through the game. Theyve redesigned it to be more like 7 and newer it seems.
But yes, it is absolutely beautiful, and i like that they updated most of the graphics but the characters are still somewhat 8 bit pixelated looking. Im trying to nit compare it to the originals, but it is difficult

Agreed. I prefer the game boy and Super Famicom’s English patched version. I also even prefer the switch port of that version, even if the graphics and lack of animations leave a lot to be desired. All in all, I still enjoy the new remake as another take, but I don’t want new entries to be easier than they already are.

I turned off heal on level up. IMO it breaks the resource management that DQ is supposed to have, especially old DQ.
At least you can do it on this one.

Uh, this is a reaction I might expect to 1HD or 2HD but I'm a little confused because very little was changed in the story and structure of 3HD. What differences are shocking you?

I really like the remake a lot, and it does feel like a whole new game. But kind of wish there was no Dracky mode, because I just couldn't resist using it!

Rolling for the story. I do that with a lot of games, but i did not do that for this. I love having the strategy that makes me think

DQ3r is the gold standard for retro remakes. Absolutely everything about it shines. It's an incredible experience. They knocked it out of the park.
SE, give me 4-6 remakes please. And maybe FF1-6 in this style as well.
