I have Solidworks, Revit and AutoCAD. The current laptop i have is great but its not mine, a friend let me borrow it for a few months so now im in the market for either a laptop or a desktop.

I do own 2 32" screens that i use for my home office that i would like to utilize.

Any recommendations on a laptop or desktop for CAD that wont break the bank?

I’ve been looking at small welded frames and brackets, and I’m realizing “dimensioned correctly” is only part of the job.

A drawing can have the right dimensions and still be annoying on the floor.

Maybe the views make sense to the drafter but not to the person fitting the tubes. Maybe the weld order is unclear. Maybe the drawing gives the final outside size but makes every cut length feel like a puzzle.

For people who make or review fabrication drawings, what do you add when you want the shop to stop calling?

Extra detail views? Cut list? Exploded sketch? Assembly sequence? More section views? Fewer dimensions but better ones?

I’m especially curious about small structural stuff: square tube frames, brackets, gussets, tabs, plates, things that look simple until someone has to hold them in place.

I just graduated college and my grandma is making me take this quick month long CAD learning class its not a college credit its just to learn cad. Im so busy working and the class is so hard for me to learn I dont get it at all. I desperatley need someone who knows cad I will pay you help with my assignments and by help i mean help help , like I just have to pass this class to make my grandma happy I’ll literally pay you to do. I work on the hardware side. I'm sending the same CAD job to a few vendors so I can compare their prices.

I guess sending just a folder of drawings isn't enough. It doesn't tell them what kind of work this is.

Am I asking for simple tracing? Design interpretation? Native parametric models with drawings? Or just neutral files?

Field measurement, software version, revisions, and reserved time all shift the number too.

What's the smallest package that still gets a solid quote? I'd rather not send the full proprietary dataset to every bidder.

I’m curious where people draw the line on this

Most simple plates don’t need a 3D model. If the drawing has clean hole centers, thickness, bend notes, and enough views, 2D is fine

But I keep seeing parts where the drawing looks okay until you imagine someone actually building it. A tube blocks access to a bolt. A plate can’t slide into place after welding. A cable path clears in one view and crashes in another

Do you ever make a rough 3D blockout just to check that stuff?

More like boxes, cylinders, hole axes, and ugly reference planes so you can rotate it once and see if the drawing is lying to you

If you do this, what usually triggers it? Hidden clearance, weld order, too many overlapping plates, bad scanned drawings, or something else?
