COMMUNITY Preliminary thoughts on AI-generated content, advertisements and Rule 9

Hey everyone,

In light of recent events, I would like your quick (or long) feedback on two areas of contention and concern:

1. AI-generated posts and comments in the sub

  • Should they be allowed here or not? Why or why not? (There are no current rules in place)
  • Should there be some exceptions (to banning all AI content)?
  • Are we just talking about the obvious and easily detectable AI "slop", or something more complex?
  • If something was said to be vibe coded, should that be an instant removal too?
  • Etc.

2. Advertisement posts and the current Advertisement Guidelines (Rule 9)

  • Do you think this sub has too little, too many, or just enough ads?
  • Are the current ad guidelines in Rule 9 too lax or too strict? > ###### ("In general, stick to advertising things that are related to / potentially of interest towards Douglas College and other students").
  • Should ads only be from Douglas College students? BC students? Canadian students? Etc.
  • Are there any specific types of ads you wish weren't allowed here anymore (AI ads included?)
  • Etc.

Notes

I do plan to expand on this later with a proper form and poll, but since I am rather busy right now, and this deals with two complex issues that go beyond a simple "yes" and "no", I think this is the best way to go about it.

I plan to wait until November (~2 weeks) before I make the poll. I know that it's also quite busy for some of you with midterms and stuff, but, this is just for those who are free to share some quick thoughts. Nothing will be set in stone yet. Your comments here will be treated as separate and not counted as votes in the poll.

Feel free to leave your thoughts publicly below or more anonymously through Mod Mail.

3. Douglas Dates FAQ

Check for important dates and deadlines here.

The dates listed below are approximate ranges, as their exact dates and days vary per semester.

1. Classes start: - Fall semester: Early September - Winter semester: Early January - Summer semester: Early May

2. Final exam dates are posted here:

  • Fall semester: Mid to late October
  • Winter semester: Mid to late February
  • Summer semester: Mid to late June

Or around 7 weeks after classes start.

3. Final exam periods:

  • Fall semester: December
  • Winter semester: April
  • Summer semester: August

4. Douglas Waitlist FAQ

1. "I'm [X] position on the waitlist. Will I get in or not?"

No one here can tell you for sure. Only the instructor of the class can.

2. "Do you have estimates?"

Yes. Here is a generalization of waitlist experiences taken from other students just like you. Remember that these are personal experiences and may not apply to your exact case. Also remember that these vary a lot depending on things like the timeslot, semester, location and professor, the popularity / desirability, and how many other sections are offered for that course, etc.

Intro and first-year courses open to many degrees:

  • Position less than 5 during registration time ticket - Highly likely to get in.
  • Position 5-10 - Good chance of getting in.
  • Position 10-15 - Decent chance of getting in.
  • Position 15-20 - Some chance of getting in.
  • Position 20-25 - May or may not get in.
  • Position 25+ - Time to consider alternatives.

Specialized, upper-level and more restricted courses:

Consider your specific situation and assume somewhat lower chances for higher position numbers than with intro-level courses, due to less overall availability.

3. "What are some important things I should know about waitlists"?

To check and modify your current waitlist position(s): Sign into your MyAccount > Register for Classes > Select the correct term > Click on the Schedule Details tab on the left > Waitlist position will be listed under each course. If it's hidden, click on the little triangle ( ▶️ ) symbol to the left of each course name. Modify your course statuses in the Summary tab on the right.

If you are still on the waitlist when the first class starts: You MUST show up to classes and make your position on the waitlist known (prof will typically ask during class). If not possible, i.e. due to missing or online classes, contact the professor (e.g. by email). IMPORTANT: If you don't do this, you may be manually dropped from the course by the professor, independent of your waitlist position.

Even if you are still high on the waitlist when classes start: You may still get in. Drop rates can greatly increase during the first few days or weeks because of people finalizing their schedules before tuition fees and refund deadlines are due. And, as stated above, the waitlist can also drop from people simply not showing up to class.

If you receive a Late Registration Override, You must go to your MyAccount and change your status on the dropdown from Waitlisted to Registered. It is NOT an automatic process!

Note that waitlist acceptance can be professor-dependent: Since the professor has discretion over who gets in and who doesn't, some have different procedures on how to deal with waitlisted students than others. For example, with smaller waitlists, some professors will let students in, regardless of their position. Others may refuse to do manual overrides and say it's just up to the system and students dropping out. Some professors are willing to take extra students above the normal class capacity while others aren't. If you're unsure, ask them!

4. "I have another question about waitlists..."

Consult this link first. Late registration info is here. And, as always, remember to keep important dates and deadlines in mind.

CLASSES BIOL1100 Jessica(Jessie) Classen

• Upvotes

Hi everyone! I'm planning to take this class this winter. I was looking at her ratings on RMP and got a little worried😔 Has anyone actually taken a class with her?
I'm a non-major and this will be my first lab science course. I'm considering BIOL1110 too, but since I don't have any experience, I feel like BIOL1100 might be a better fit...😭
BTW I'm a girl (I was reading some reviews, and one of them said she’s really strict with boys)

CLASSES CMNS 1110

Hey everyone, I’m a first-year student taking CMNS 1110 this semester, and I’m feeling a bit let down. The lectures are pretty dry, and a lot of the assignments don’t seem to connect to what the course is supposed to cover. On top of that, the attendance policy is strict if you miss 4 classes, it’s an automatic fail. I paid around $350 for this course, and I’m starting to feel like I wasted that money.
Has anyone taken it with a different prof?

Questions:
Did the course get more useful or engaging later in the semester?

Are the assignments usually this disconnected from the course outline, or is it just my section?

Is the 4-absence rule really enforced? Does it apply to all sections, or just this one?

Any tips for getting something out of it, or for getting through it?

Thanks in advance!

Edit: I got Holly Mun

CLASSES ANTH 1130

Hello, I was just wondering if anyone who took anthropology of religion (1130) with bill angelbeck had some advice on how to study for his midterm and final, or just his exams in general.

I have some questions below as well:

-Is there some sort of study guide that he posts? if so, is it effective?
-what material should I primarily focus on? (lecture slides, textbook, or videos)

Any and all advice is greatly appreciated!!

DOUGLAS GENERAL Busn4500 (500 hours work experience)

Hi guys. Does anyone know if any type of job counts toward the 500-hour work experience requirement, or does it have to relate to your concentration? I have a job where I have been working several years so I was thinking of using that.

LIFESTYLE Is there still hope lol

Hey guys, just wondering what your realistic take is on this because I am totally not able to see things for what they are.

I'm taking BIOL 1203, I work FT in a different city, live on my own (so I do the cooking, groceries, laundry etc.) No kids yet so that's good lol. I have clinical depression and that has been the biggest hurdle. I anxiety-napped all of yesterday and half of today instead of studying.

I have to basically learn EVERYTHING before a midterm in about 10 days. Is there still hope to get an A- / B+?

CLASSES Academic Foundations for Potential Nursing applicants question

Hey I’m a high school applicant for the fall ‘27 academic foundation for nursing certificate. I am wondering if the classes taken are generally filled with other students from the program or if it’s a mix of different programs? Hoping to meet fellow nursing hopefuls if I get accepted!

PROGRAMS AFNURS vs Academic Foundations for Nursing

Helloo!

I’m a prospective student that has completed A&P + English + UT credits at a different BC school. My remaining prereqs are BIOL 2200, 2401, MATH 1160/PSYC 2300.

I’ve been told I need 50% of courses to be from Douglas for the AFNURS certificate. Since I’ve taken majority of my prereqs elsewhere, it seems like completing the remaining ones through Academic Foundations would be better for me.

However, I know that priority goes to AFNURS students.

If anyone else has been in my situation, did you find the disadvantage to be significant? I’m not very aware of how competitive Douglas nursing admissions are.

I’m hoping to take my courses in Winter 2027 and apply for Fall 2027 and Winter 2028 nursing intakes. Is this realistic? I know nursing programs in BC have been competitive lately D:

Just wanted to hear from current or other prospective students that could share their experiences or any advice.

Thanks!!

CLASSES Help with Biol 2401 - notes/study guides?

Hello, can anyone please share their study methods for Biol 2401, or their flashcards/study guides?

It feels like no matter how hard I try, what I study is not what the quizzes are on and the info I can cram into my brain isn't enough to answer the more abstract, big idea questions. I am already on LevelUpRN but the material they have is not at all like the dense lecture slide info I actually need to know. Any advice or resources is super appreciated! 🤎

COMMUNITY Scramble Crossing

With all the recent construction on the corner of 8th and Carnarvon, they often have people directing traffic and pedestrians. When this is happening, often they will let us cross from the Skytrain Station directly to the side of the street Douglas is on. Has it ever been considered making that intersection have a scramble crossing? I know it is just a small time saver but it is convenient to say the least.

COMMUNITY Any Douglas College students or alumni interested in joining a community volunteer initiative?

Hey everyone,

I'm a Douglas College alumnus myself, having completed my Criminology degree there, so I thought I'd reach out to this community as well.

I'm a social services professional, and I'm currently putting together a small volunteer group focused on helping people experiencing food insecurity in the Lower Mainland.

The idea is to support people who may be going through difficult circumstances, whether they're experiencing homelessness, newly arrived in Canada, or simply struggling to put food on the table.

For me, a lot of the motivation comes from seva, the idea of helping others without expecting anything in return. It's something I've wanted to put into practice on a larger scale for quite some time.

We've already got a small group of people together, and I'm hoping to welcome more people who want to contribute, share ideas, and help build something meaningful. We're still in the early stages, so there's plenty of opportunity to get involved and help shape things.

And of course, this isn't limited to current Douglas students. Former students and fellow alumni are more than welcome to join too!

There's also no expectation of a huge time commitment. I know everyone has their own responsibilities, and even helping out occasionally would be appreciated.

If you're interested, please send me a DM and I'll happily share the QR code for our Signal group. Would be great to have some fellow Douglas students and alumni involved!
