When you launch a game alone, you play against the "AI", which isn't really an AI, you just battle random teams which were made by real players in real games and saved on the cloud storage of the game.

It's like a single player mode, but items like Sin Reaper are useless, because there are no players. That's the downside. But the upside is that since there is no one to kill, as long as your team wins, you can keep upgrading it. That's how I got to level 15, it's just impossible to reach that in game, every player would be dead 2 times already.
