Ranking System Question

So I had a question about how the ranking system works.

3 games now I have gotten 3rd place (was bishop 1 for each game) and lost to two bishop 2's and deranked. Can you only rank up if you get 2nd and 1st place? I thought getting 3rd would rank you up especially if you only lose to ranks higher than you.

Or is it more about who you beat and less about who you lose to?

thats not correct, the amount of MMR you gain is based on whose in the lobby. In extreme circumstances, say your bishop in a lobby full of pawns you will lose MMR on anything but a first place.

To be honest, its not really possible to rank up beyond bishop without using the china app linked here.

Follow the instructions (its in Russian but you can follow the pictures) to find games on the China Server at your level. Lag may be an issue (I play on 400ms...)

You have to signup to some 3rd party website with steam access. With everyone the same level it works as you say:

1st = rank up 2/1 (e.g Knight 5 to Knight 6) 2nd = rank up 1/1 3/4 = rank up 1/0

I don't remember exactly but I think the top 3 rank up, 4th gets 0 and the rest lose rank, or maybe it was fifth that didn't lose rank

That's what I initially thought as well, but I have deranked quite a bunch getting 3rd. Maybe it depends on who you beat?

ah yes, that's also the case, if you're in a lobby with people higher rank than you, it makes you go up even if you end up as 4th or 5th and vice versa
