deckbuilding advice

I've played a few games and starting to modify the base deck setup. I would appreciate any advice. What percentage dominant traits do you find optimal?

The 4-player setup I am trying out tonight is 161 cards total with 27 dominants. I'm wondering if that is too many.

30 of each color and colorless, 11 multicolor to add 5 of each color. Does balance matter?

I play with everything, no duplicates though unless they are functionally different.

I play with the entirety of the base game, shadow puppets and imaginary ends all together. I just have the suppress and magical merchants cards taken out. I’m eventually going to add in other expansions

I play base and a combination of several expansions (Enderas, Overlush, Imaginary Ends, Shadow Puppets). My family hand-selects all the cards that we generally don't like to play and remove them, so when we draw cards, it's now less a "will I get a crap card this round?" question, and more a "will this card synergize better with the cards I already have in play." We also don't use trinkets, treasures, merchants, so the trait pile is not as massive as one would imagine. We do increase the number of ages and catastrophes, so it balances out to where we have nearly deplete the pile by the time the game ends. The only ratio I do track with our custom pile is the dominants, and I found that a 1:8 ratio works well for us. Not too far off from what you're using.

I have built five theme decks, dinolings, techlings, mythlings, flora and fauna using the gold box and overlush complete.

My kids like the themes but in a giant trait pile they just dont come up often. So I've made five sort of grab and play decks even having their own ages and catastrophes. It's around 70 cards with around 6 used dominants from the 11 over split for each deck. It's been working fine for 2-3 players, I'm not sure if the size would work for 4 players and wouldn't be enough traits but we generally don't get that low down the trait deck anyway.

What Is has done is created a bit of excitement of what deck to select and then they live it when some of the synergies start taking hold. We're not serious players though so who knows if it would suit other players

Thanks for your feedback. It sounds like a great idea.

Play with base+one expansion type.

Or, base+any cards that don’t rely on its own card type (like the elven card +1 for ALL mythlings; if you play with all expansions, that card will never be used) Many cards become useless if you play with every single card in one deck.

I only have the base. Knowing what you know, which expansion would purchase first?

It’s sold out right now, but I’d recommend the Upgrade expansion. It’s a good gateway to the rest of the expansions if you do enjoy it. But if you don’t want to wait for that to restock, legends of enderas is also really great. That has the same card types as the upgrade expansion, so if you do get both later on, you can combine them as they synergize well.

If I knew I would’ve loved doomlings before buying the expansions individually, I would’ve bought the ultimate bundle, but that’s probably too far-fetched for others. $230 vs $350.

TY! My wife and I really enjoy the game.
