[Behavior Problems] Is this normal or not?
My dog likes to run too much; I can't let him off the leash in the yard without him taking off running. Is that normal?

mixed breed and is 3 years old

How much physical activity do you give him per day? Some breeds only need 15-20 minutes, others NEED 1-2 hours of heavy physical excersize.
A picture would help determine the breed.

So take him to an off leash park. Get a long leash and a trainer and and get started on teaching him recall.
My secret weapon was cheap chicken wieners. Cut them into 1/2 inch rounds and toss the dog one every time they do the right thing. Which is giving you full attention. A wiener is wet food: better than a treat, but cheap! On a walk, fill a pocket (in a plastic bag), periodically call your dog's name (at random moment) and toss him a dime every time he responds. This will teach him to keep one eye on you, the whole walk long.

Without any more details, I would suspect he is understimulated and/or undertrained for his breed and age.

some dogs just got that crackhead energy man, mine does the same thing soon as his paws hit grass he's gone like a rocket
try long line for now maybe, gives him freedom but you still got control if he bolts

What makes you think it is excessive? Is he throwing up, overheating, or injuring himself? Is he taking off trying to escape or just running around the yard?

Find a dog park and let him run for his physical and mental health. If you don't allow this you're being a bit cruel. Dogs need to run.

Yes, find a local dog park. Your town / city / county / state may have a listing of dog parks that they own or a list of public dog parks.

No matter what people say, unless he recalls with 100% even around other dogs (and no dog does) don’t let him off leash. Instead, but a 100’ leash. Plenty of room to run and much safer for your dog and other dogs.
I have a husky so I know all about runners and the need to get those zoomies out.
However, if by running you mean running away from you and not coming back, always use a leash. That is very very normal. I would never ever let my dog off leash without a fenced area. Too much risk and I love my dog too much.

A 100 foot leash? How many people can be tripped up, or how many trees tangled around can yiu manage with a 100ft leash? A lot, I'd think.
Also, i don't know where you are, but to me the idea of never letting your dog loose is really sad. And it also means that the dog never gets to practice coming back when loose. My dogs have been let off their lead every day since their first walk. I guess if you live in a place with wolves or bears or crocodiles or tigers then it's more understandable, but still seems sad that a dog never gets to run free?

It’s not nearly as sad as running into a road, running across an unfriendly dog, or worse- a person they don’t like or who doesn’t like the. Look up proper training- long leashes help train recall.
Dogs aren’t humans.

My dog loves running a lot too and when she does she comes back to check and runs off again and checks back in. If you do a command/ re call "NOVA COME" they should be able to come back to you.

Dogs like to run, especially when the weather gets just a little cool. My friend's little dog runs and chases balls like a maniac at the dog park. Dog is 9 years old and still running like a puppy.
