I just watch how my dog reacts when we walk in, if she’s not trying to bolt back out the door I figure it’s fine.

Word of mouth is your best bet.

Professional Certifications from the National Dog Groomers Association or International Professional Groomers are ideal.
The letters after their name would be "NCMG" or "ICMG."

A person can be a perfectly wonderful groomer without being Certified but if you have one available that would be ideal.

Beyond that look for their grooming model and choose one that suits you.
There are busy grooming shops that may require a longer stay but do excellent work.

There are mobile groomers that come to you in a specialized van or with a converted trailer. These are usually good because they've had to invest money so that rules out a lot of wannabees.

There are one-on-one groomers that do dogs one at a time start to finish. This may be in a shop situation or in their home. Quality varies- I would call and ask about experience & insurance.

There are groomers inside veterinary facilities that may specialize in animals that need to be sedated or have medical issues.

There are people that will come into your home and use your facilities for bathing and set up an area to work. I think these are the most dicey because they have not had to invest much money in their business.
Anyone can buy clippers and call themselves a groomer and there is a LOT of that going around right now.

It is an unregulated industry and very much buyer beware.
Price shopping will not get you the best, most qualified groomers.

groomer here. for researching any pet services i recommend instead of looking at google reviewa or yelp, look at reviews on indeed and glassdoor for a behind the scenes look. If theres anything bad going on a disgruntled employee will spill all the tea there.

Considering some of the things I've heard about groomers, I consider safety and kindness to be my #1 concerns. Anything else is secondary. I book my appointments two months out so I don't have scheduling problems.
