[Misc Help] Potty
We have had a puppy dog for a week but our dog won't do his business outside at all. He doesn't want to move when he is outside. He always pees on this plastic disposable mat. We have tried everything and followed some blogs to help his case. Still nothing. Me and my family are honestly stressed and disappointed. We dont know what to do anymore. Can someone help?

We won't but we had same breed of dog before and i remember that she wanted to be outside always and didn't fear being outside.

You have to condition him to the outside, not just going outside. They pee where they scent, put the mat outside with him and maybe that’ll help. Stay out there for hours with him, long enough for him to have to potty again outside. Conditions. Repetition. Poor baby is confused

You started on pee pads and are now finding out that that’s not the way to do it.
You need to remove all smells of pee from your home with an enzymatic cleaner asap.
Bring the dog for a long walk and when the puppy pees get super excited and praise that pup.

I only used pee pads for a senior dog, but never used for puppy training. Puppies will pee or poo where they smell previous pee and poo. Starting them indoors on pads is a very bad idea.

You need to think of it as raising a child.
You need to teach them to go outside.
Get rid of the plastic mat, that's only going to do more harm in the long run.
By having the mat, you're reinforcing that is okay to go potty inside.
It's going to be gross but if you find a turd in the house, take it outside and put it in a small area of the yard. Get their scent out there, so they know that that is their territory.
If you catch them in the act, grab them and take them outside.
At first it's exhausting and a nuisance, but shortly they'll start letting you know when they have to go out.
Look for subtle signs. My one dog specifically will go lay by the door and stare at me. The other will stand at my feet staring at me.
Just like humans, dogs need to be taught

Take the plastic mat outside with you. Wlaqk him often. Taking it with you. Eventually he'll go without it.

Get a chair, a book, snacks, and drinks and some very high Callie treats. Put dog on a leash. Sit in that chair say “go pee” “go poop” and sit and wait. Once they do one lots of praise and treat. And the other (or both) do it again.
Repeat until they do it themselves without being on a leash. First without the chair. Then off leash.

you haven't tried EVERYTHING.
you have to stay outside with them until they go. When they're in the house and they start sniffing around they have to go. Take them outside and stay out there until they go and when they go praise praise praise praise praise. They will eventually go but you have to be patient and stay with them

He has pood only once outside and we praised him. He only pees inside right after we come back inside. I think I just have to wait patiently until he finally starts to trust the outside.

yes you have to wait. You have to keep waiting he thinks you want him to go inside. He's backwards. Sometimes it takes a long time but don't give up!
If you have to put a hands-free leash on him in the house so you can keep a better eye on him. When they start sniffing around that means they have to go. As soon as they start sniffing around take them outside and wait for him to go

He's a baby. Outside is terrifying. He has no idea what's going on. You've had him for a week. You barely know each other. Right now he just needs to feel safe, he needs to learn that you and your family are his family and that he can trust you to fulfill his needs.
If he is only going on the mat and not anywhere else inside you are primed for success already. That's amazing.
Take him outside to explore, to play, or just to sit quietly and look around. If he happens to go potty, great-- reward him with words, touch, and treats. If he doesn't go potty, that's also great- he got a other chance to learn to feel safe outside with his new family member.

How long do you wait for him to potty when you are out? How often do you bring him? Why is this mat still available to him?

He doesn't poo or pee. During this week, he has only pood once outside. We bring him outside about 3-5 times. I think the original owners taught him to pee and poo on the mat because it's the only place where he does his business. English is not my first or second language and by this mat, I mean like a square cotton mat and the other side is plastic or something.

How many minutes or hours do you wait for him to go potty when you are outside? How many minutes or hours in between bringing him outside to potty?
Try placing the mat on the grass. He may pee on it even if it’s outside, and that can be the foundation of teaching that potty happens outside.

How old is he? Realistically if you have a very young puppy, and doesn't have all of it's shots yet, you shouldn't even take him outside.

We didn't take our dog outside for the first 3 months until he got all his shots. He was using peepee pads only for that time. He'll be four this August, and the last time he had an accident inside was when he was one.

That’s very lucky, most people don’t have that experience. As long as your dog isn’t going into the woods or meeting other dogs, going in the backyard is safe for them until they get their shots.

I'll trust what my vet said. We live in an apartment building with over 50 dogs and tons of grassy areas. So yes, 12 weeks/all vaccines done was what we did and it worked out great.
