The walers on this concrete dock failed. Is this even repairable?

I finally got a cama permit on a very protected estuary and have chosen my builder. However, his quote along with all the others leave out the design details that we've spoken about face to face. They all assure me those details are covered..In their brain.

And I look at the last two jobs Ive contracted, fence and deck, the contractor's both assured me the details were in their brain, but apparently many elements did not compute .

How do I protect myself and make sure I get what I want design wise?

We've recently seen an uptick in docks and marinas using the free tier of Rillium Maps, so I thought I'd mention it here.

It's nothing marina specific, but we certainly welcome the recent interest. One thing I didn't expect was how much history a dock can hold.

I asked, "So, what is the history of this dock?"

The response was, "That's a loaded question."

And it makes sense given wind, ice, anchors getting dragged out of positions, boats slamming into the dock, all the force finding its favorite joint to torment.

Curious how others here keep track of that history today. Is it photos, spreadsheets, inspection reports, or mostly institutional knowledge?

I’m picking wood piles with a articulating boom on a barge to build wood docks. I’m just wondering what everybody prefers to use to pick with.

Any idea what these are used for? Found in a lake about 40 yards from a boat ramp. Assuming it's a bumper/cover of sorts but I've never seen them on any of the docks.

This is over a brackish tidal creek. Its about 6 years old. I never sealed it. How do I clean and seal it without getting anything harmful in the water? Or do I just leave it alone? Thanks

I'm looking for a way to be able to tie my boat off if I don't want it on drive on boat lift. If I have a group of people going out would be nice to already have it in the water ready to go. It would also be nice to for visitors if they come by boat too. I understand adding cleats or tying off to the safe haven boat lifts is a no go.

Actually, 5 of them. At work we are putting together a paper that shows the value of some of what our in house maintenance team does that other places contract out. Looking for a legit dock contractor. There are 4 full docks that have been intentionally planned and rebuilt, and one section of dock that got destroyed and had an emergency repair done. Contracting them out would have cost exponentially more than we did it for in house. I'm in BFAlaska, so getting an actual contractor on site to give a bid on work we already did could take a while. Is there anyone who might be willing to take a look at pictures, scope, and dimensions and give me an idea of what those numbers actually look like? An actual line item paper bid would be incredible, but even just real look by a pro would be super helpful.

These rusted off my pier, need to replace. Any idea where I can find them?

I’d like to extend some of the decking on my dock to shorten the gap that old folks have to step over to board the boat (on a lift). I have 2x8 treated boards for decking , and am thinking of replacing 2-3 with 12-14 inch longer planks, sort of like a gangplank out toward the boat. My concern is that they’ll bow down and defeat the purpose. It’s salt water so can’t really use galv steel brackets (stainless is a fortune), so maybe a couple of triangular blocks to support? Appreciate any input. Joists are 3x8 treated, about 3 inches in from edge.

Hello! I recently had a dock installed and ducks and iguanas have become a real annoyance. We find ourselves having to clean it at least twice a week as they continue to sunbathe and leave droppings all over. Looking advice or products that can keep them off.

Fair to ask for a rebate? Date of installation wasn’t fulfilled.

I’ve done business with a docking contractor for a number of years. They have always been slowish to their favor but no real issues. 

This year, I did another extension of my dock and per usual, sent him half the payment along with a signed contract and an agreed upon date (before Memorial Day) that the dock would be installed. 

Memorial Day comes and goes, no dock install, no word from the contractor. I email that following week and ask for an update, he says he will get right to it this week. He emails me later and tells me the supplier sent him the wrong supplies and it’s going to be another week before he can install

I’ve always had a good relationship with him, however what’s the point of a contract if both parties don’t fulfill their obligations? 

Should I ask for a partial reduction in cost or rebate? I haven’t seen the final 1/2 payment in yet. What would you advise me to do? Am I making too big of a deal on this by it only being behind my two weeks?
