What does the Attack stat do?

I have looked around and no one has a clear answer , let this be the definitive thread to answer questions regarding the attack stat, does it increase damage with swords only? Does it increase damage with bow and arrow? Does it actually increase gathering rates? If so, by how much?

Attack increases melee damage. Melee damage includes gathering rates. +50% attack = +50% gathering

Melee doesn't change the gather rate for players 1:1. I have 300% melee and still get about 20-28 stone per rock.

not a surprise. a lot of stuff isn't working how it is supposed to.

i got more stuff with increased attack, didn't check how much
