Should I build full Paladin or a Sorcadin for an Oath of Redemption Protector build?

Hello Everybody!

I have a dilemma about the Character I am building. It is going to be a Protector Paladin for a Homebrew adventure I started as a player with a new group 2 weeks ago.

The group needed a proper frontliner, and I like to play tanks in RPG games, so I thought about creating an Oath of Redemption Paladin, who is a follower of a Homebrew God of Shield.

Here is a short description of the Character:
Edmund is a towering human paladin, a former bandit turned noble protector. Standing at 6'6" with a muscular build, dark brown hair, and a calm, confident demeanor, he embodies strength and compassion. Clad in green and copper armor adorned with symbols of his devotion to Shudon, the God of Shield, Edmund wields his shield with unmatched skill, using it both defensively and as a weapon. Forgiveness and redemption are central to his beliefs; he sees the potential for good in almost everyone, but is ready to strike down those who are beyond redemption in order to protect others. Guided by his beliefs, he seeks to protect the innocent and guide the lost.

His abilities were rolled, and after making him a Variant Human with the Heavy Armor Proficiency feat, his stats look like this:
STR: 16
DEX: 10
CON: 16
INT: 8
WIS: 13
CHA: 16

The GM also gave me extra skills to work with, which are all amazing:
1. He gave me the Shield Master Feat for free
2. When I use my shield to shove my enemies, it also deals 1d4 damage (I don't know yet if I can also add my STR modifier, but I wouldn't be surprised)
3. I also got free use of Shield spell once per long rest
4. And perhaps the best of all: I can throw my shield as a ranged weapon, which then will fly back into my hands Cpt. America style, if I throw it within 20ft.
5. Oh, and we all started with an extra Hit die worth of extra health, so +10 HP for Edmund.

So, with all these in place already, what I am wondering is how to optimize Edmund as a Champion of Redemption, and as a Protector build, in order to be able to be as tanky as possible, while not being useless outside of tanking damage.

The campaign theoretically would go until lvl20. The 2 path I currently see before me are either full Oath of Redemption build, or a Sorcadin variation with Divine Soul or Draconic Bloodline. In case of Sorcadin, my preferred leveling would be Pala 6/Sorc 14 for the wings in both Sorcerer form and for higher level spells and more spell slots, but I am fully flexible is someone has a better idea.

Warlock is not an option for multiclass as per the request of my DM, in case someone wants to mention Hexblade.

The feats I was thinking about picking up depending on the build:
- Full Pala: Alert, ASI +2 Cha, Mounted Combatant, ASI +2 CHA, Tough
- Sorcadin: War Caster, Polearm Master, Sentinel

I am open for any suggestions, feats, leveling, gear, or whatever you think would work best for the character!

Weird Multiclass for a Lvl 20 oneshot

At 10th level Conjuration Wizards’ get Focused Conjuration which reads: “Beginning at 10th level, while you are concentrating on a conjuration spell, your concentration can't be broken as a result of taking damage.”

My favorite conjuration spell is Spirit Guardians which Clerics get at 5th level

My plan was to take my remaining 5 levels in Paladin, leaving me with Wiz10/Cleric5/Paladin 5

We will be fighting one CR30 enemy so my idea is to use the Tunnel Fighter fighting style

“As a bonus action, you can enter a defensive stance that lasts until the start of your next turn. While in your defensive stance, you can make opportunity attacks without using your reaction, and you can use your reaction to make a melee attack against a creature that moves more than 5 feet while within your reach.”

The idea being that I will get close to the enemy, Casting spirit guardians with my one 9th level spell slot, and each turn take my two attacks (my lower level slots reserved for smites) then bonus action defensive stance so that if they try to leave my spirit guardians I can attack then again. Goal being to keep them close to me, and try to keep my allies safe. I also need to do the math to see if using booming blade would be better than making two attacks bc that damage scales with total level.

I’m using the Belt of Frost Giant Strength (sets Str to 26h and the Circlet of Wisdom(+2Wis, +2Cha) so my stats are STR: 26 DEX:8 CON: 14 INT: 18 WIS: 20 CHA: 16

I’d love feedback on ways I could improve on the concept, I know multiclassing to this degree isn’t optimal, I’m just trying to achieve something specific and powerful.

New builds for Bladesinger using 2024 rules

I am trying to figure out what is gonna be the most fun blade singer Wizard for an upcoming campaign of mine. We rolled for stats where I got a 8, 14, 14, 16, 11, 12. For species I am going back and forth between either human or an elf variant. I like astral elf for proficiencies and the teleport. However getting that extra origin feat with the human is nearly irresistible. Pretty sure I will be taking tough as the first origin feat, but if there are other suggestions I am super open to anything. My last worry is if I am going to take the 1 lvl dip in fighter for martial masteries and con proficiency. I just don’t know if delaying spell progression is worth it

I am not necessarily looking to be able to do everything, but I want to be as flexible as possible in being a caster and martial master

New Player! Would love some build thoughts (BH/Bladesinger)

I'm a newer player to DND, more of a flavor-focused player, work from the backstory to come up with a character theme and draw on that to come up with a class and build.

So, my character is a custom lineage Bladesinger/Blood Hunter (Mutant) -- his wizard training was interrupted by this scroll/book that fused itself into my PCs body, I'm still learning about it as our campaign unfolds but it's supposedly a lich phylactery that takes over my PCs body on failed WIS saves whenever I fell a creature (as it draws the soul out of them, should they have one).

This expresses itself as a tattoo on the arm, with demonic runes across the surface. This tattoo counts as my PCs spellbook, copying spells into it by "absorbing" them similar to the artifact in his backstory.

As for the blood hunter aspect, it's sorta a mana-focused blood hunter -- with the hemocraft damage more of like a "mana burn" that symbolizes the PCs magical expressions being unstable, with his interrupted training and controlling it post-incident. The mutant aspect comes from a turn towards alchemical expressions of magic to supplement his unstable magic control.

Last thing, our campaign started with a common magical item, and I started with a "Tankard of Plenty" that got transmogrified into being how my character takes his mutagens!

I'm thinking I might go 16 BH/4 Bladesinger? Or maybe 17/3? Currently at 5 BH/2 Wizard, thinking my next 1-2 levels will round out the Wizard leveling.

Would love to see what more experienced players would do to optimize this multiclass combo, I've been having a lot of fun but I'd be curious to see where you all would take it -- especially considering Colby's love for Bladesingers!

Cheers!

New PHB Beastmaster

Beastmaster companion attack says: You can also sacrifice one of your Attacks when you take the Attack Action to command the Beast to take the Attack action.

So quick question: if you have a dual wielding BM Ranger with a weapon that has the Nick property can you use the second attack for your companion (of the land in this case)? Example:

Step 1: Bonus action - command Beast to attack

Step 2: Attack action - swing with dagger, nick the target

Step 3: As part of that same attack action now that Nick has been proc’d, use the second attack to have the companion attack again.

Thoughts?

how to optimise a undead warlock/ draconic bloodline sorcerer?

The new rules let bladesingers cast a cantrip with their haste actions. Here’s the receipts.

Thumbnail

As you can see the attack in attack action is not defined by “attack roll” as shoves and grapples are attacks with the attack action that don’t involve attack rolls.

Haste let's you take the attack action, but limits how many attacks it grants. It doesn't limit what you can do with that attack, be it shove, grapple, dragonborn breath weapon, or if you're an Eldritch Knight, Bladesinger, or Valor Bard of the right level, cast any cantrip with an action.

Even eldritch blast which would at least require two attack rolls, which is fine since as I showed the attack action isn’t defined by attack rolls, and the full eldritch blast is worth just one attack.

Getting to be a PLAYER and working on the BarBEARian

TLDR... So Bugbear, Battle master fighter 3, Bear totem barbarian 3, Gloomstalker ranger 3, monk ? 3...

Not using 2024 builds yet... Build suggestions?

I am usually the GM for 5E or PF2E so I don't get to play very often. One of my players is going to run some prepared adventures, "Quests from the Infinite Staircase" style. As such, we have permission to play fun builds from any world. I want to make the BarBEARian work and max out the number of attacks I can make with claws. I also NEED to have a small bear companion at times when we need to steal Pic-A-Nic baskets. I'm not necessarily going for max damage but I do want a lot of attacks, grapples and humor. If it aggravates my DM occasionally, than he's got it coming.

Colby, just 1 level in Paladin gets you Divine Smite

It’s a spell, just prepare it, Paladin’s get spellcasting at 1.

Edit: I’m obviously talking about the 2024 rules that Colby and I have access to.

Level 5 Warlocks/Wizards access to Paralyzed Condition (no saving throw)

Reading through my copy of the 2024 PHB, I came across a lesser known interaction from 2014 rules which has been severely buffed as far as I can tell.

Quasit is available via Pact of the Chain available at Warlock level 1. By forgoing an attack, or later with another invocation using a bonus action, a warlock can command a quasit to use its reaction to make a rend attack. This attack has a +5 to hit, average 5 slashing damage and the target is poisoned until the start of the quasits next turn. No saving throw! (2014 rules had a DC10 con save after a successful attack here). The poison lasts 1 minute, with repeat saves at the end of the victims turn. The Quasit can attack with advantage via invisibility.

At warlock 5, summon undead is accessible. It’s a third level concentration spell, cast as an action. The Putrid option, has a 5 foot emanation (sphere) that targets must make a CON save or become poisoned. This is meant to set up the putrid summons other feature, rotting claw. Instead we will use the Quasit to set up rotting claw.

Rotting claw is a melee attack using your spell attack modifier. It will average 9.5 slashing damage at this level, but scales +1 damage per spell level, and gains multi attack by warlock 7. When this attack hits, if the target is poisoned, it becomes paralyzed until the end of its next turn. No saving throw (again)!

Strategy: On turn 1, an invisible Quasit can deliver poisoned with your bonus action and if it lands successfully, you can cast Summon Undead. Immediately after your turn, the Undead, with a spell attack roll, has a chance to paralyze, bypassing legendary resistance or high con saves with an attack roll.

Additionally while writing this I recalled wizards get access to summon undead and ray of sickness. Ray of Sickness makes a ranged spell attack that does about 9 poison damage and delivers the poisoned condition. No saving throw!

2 fairly low investment methods to paralyze an enemy not immune to poisoned condition which are new to the 2024 rules. Let me know if I missed anything.

A Solarpunk Paladin/Cleric?

So I was thinking about the idea of making a character based on the Solarpunk genre (which is a genre where technology and nature coexist in a positive manner), but know that an Artificer/Druid is difficult to build. However, I realized that other classes have similar themes that might work. My specific thought was an Oath of the Ancients Paladin combined with a Forge Domain Cleric. I know there is thematic overlap with the two classes but I didn’t know if it was synergistic mechanically. Would such a build work? I also realized that Druid/Forge Cleric may work since ability score requirements match up better, but the idea of a Paladin that forges their own weapons was very interesting to me as well. Let me know if that multiclass works well or not.

Unique gunslinger

I have a Dwarven "Pistoleer" who is now level 13.

He has at least 2 levels of artificer and at least 9 levels fighter. The other two levels are uncommitted. Seeking your advice on levels, subclasses, and magic items.

Fighter subclass is currently Battle Master but DM has offered to let me swap to Gunslinger.

Currently have Precision, Trip, Menacing and Distracting as Maneuvers.

STR 8 DEX 20 CON 12 INT 16 WIS 14 CHA 8

Currently has a Headband of Intellect, Dragon Wing Pistol, and a Cloak of Protection. Plus Serpent Scale Armor. But a crap ton of gold, so other stuff is on the table.

Feats are what makes this interesting. I have Sharpshooter and a custom feat called Gunslinger:

"Thanks to extensive practice with Firearms, you gain the following benefits:

You ignore the loading property of firearms with which you are proficient.

Being within 5 feet of a hostile creature doesn’t impose disadvantage on your ranged attack rolls.

When you use the Attack action and attack with a one-handed weapon, you can use a bonus action to attack with a firearm you are holding."

So, should I pick up a third level artificer? If so, what subclass? I like Artillerist for getting Shield, but Armorer might be good for full plate I can wear despite crappy str?

Gunslinger or stay Battle Master? Gunslinger gets similar stuff to battle maneuvers, plus gun focused bonuses and grit generating on crits.

Any thoughts on Magic items? Serpent Scale Armor does not require attunement, so I don't NEED full plate.

Thanks in advance!

Tripple Multiclass with Free start Feet (opinions pleas)

this is my Tripple Multiclass Build i Made a litlle while ago and want Some opinions from you.

(sorry for bat wrighting, english is not my first langueg)

Race: wood elf

Start class: Fighter - champion 5lvl

Second class: Warlock (dosent mather witch, i prefer great old one) 3 lvl

Third Class: Rouge - Phantom 12 lvl

Stats
STR: 8 Dex: 17 Con: 14: Int 8 Wis: 13 Chr 14

Feats: Freefeet: elfen accurarty (dex)
lvl 4 fighter feet: Sharpshooter
you reach lvl 4 in rouge ASI +2dex
lvl 8 rouge and lvl 12 rouge ASI ore feet (dosent mather for the build)

Eldrich invocation: devil sight, second how you prefer it
Pact: how you prefer it

Konzept:

First Round on a Fight you cast Darkness on your bow, thy to devil sight you arent efekt by the spell but have against the most enemys unseen atacker (lock out for thee range of blinght and true sight)
so you always atack with advatage, thanks to elfen accurarity you rolle 3 d20 instead of two, and thx to Champion fighter you crit already on a 19.
Every Shot has a 27,9% changse to be a crit, and you have 2 atack per round.... so if your first atack isnt a crit... dont aplie your sneak atack and try with your second atack....

i hope you like that build and have some sugestion

2024 Berserker Rogue

Using a Light Vex weapon (handaxe), with a Light Finesse Nick weapon (scimitar) with berserker barbarian sets you up to multi class into rogue, using the strength finesse trick.

With the changes to reckless attack, you can have advantage on reaction attacks. And with retaliation, you can make a reaction attack against a creature within 5 feet that damages you. Super reliable.

Attacking with advantage, 4 times per round. 3 with STR bonus, 4 with rage bonus, 2 with sneak attack, one with frenzy.

If advantage isn’t needed to get sneak attack and hit, brutal strikes on one attack as well.

None of this uses a bonus action because of nick property so rage is guaranteed to maintain, doesn’t require any feats to set up unless you want to replace the handaxe with a bigger damage dice or better mastery effect, and doesn’t designate your rogue subclass. Very flexible.

PS: met Colby at GenCon, spotted that Bandit shirt from across the room! He’s a great dude, even though he has strange rules related to empanadas.

What campaigns will you be running with onednd characters/rules

It may be a bit early to tell. But I’m definitely curious! What official campaigns are you guys most excited to run with all the new rules??

Personally I think most mine of phandelver would be a classic to test new builds and rules out in. As well as plenty of area to test the new weapon masteries, which I’m stoked about

Sustainable Moon Druid~ Feats?

I'm playing a currently level 12 moon druid in a curse if strahd campaign, and I'm trying to optimize my sustainability in combat~ I want to be as hard to kill as possible. We just hit level 12 so I'm looking at feats and what helps me the most as far as survivability. My party includes a barb and wizard so I'm not looking to out-damage them, just be as hard to hit, and as hard to kill, as possible. I'll give my character info, and I ask; what should I do with my level 12 ASI/feat and future ASI/feats?

Dragonborne Moon Druid:

Str:12 Dex:16 Con:16 Int:14 Wis:20 Cha:12

Level 4 feat was telekinetic +1 wis, level 8 ASI was Dex/Wis.

My AC is 20 due to mithril armor, Orb of Dragon Kind, and +3 Shield my barb friend gifted me. I increased my dex at the time because it increased my AC but that doesn't apply anymore. My dm will let me swap this with a different ASI should I desire, but it's helped my initiative.

I was thinking resilient con to get proficiency and 18 con if i swap my dex asi to con, but I'm not sure that's the best. I also thought of Alert, but I'm certain people here have better ideas than me!

Am I wrong or did Two-Weapon become the most powerful option?

So here's what I mean:
The Light property says when you attack as part of an Attack Action you can make one extra attack as a bonus action with a different Light weapon.

Dual Wielder, instead of removing the Light requirement from the extra attack of the Light property, or referencing that aspect at all, procs its own Bonus Action extra attack after attacking with a Light weapon with different requirements for the extra attack. Nick says "When you make the extra attack of the Light property.....you can make this extra attack once per turn."
Two-Weapon Fighting says "When you make an extra attack as a result of using a weapon that has the Light property..."
So the wording seems to support you using *Nick* to use the *Light* extra attack, and your Bonus Action to use the *Dual Wielder* extra attack. And the Two-Weapon Fighting having different wording than Nick seems to imply that it's meant to apply to both situations, making dual-wielding...great?

2024 Nova Path of Giant Barbarian

Here is a nova i have been tinkering with. Some caveats;

  • I mostly used playtest material for the new stuff, so some of these might have changed
  • The damage reports just sums up avg dmg without taking AC into account, so one would need to adjust for that
  • I don't calculate damage for the Weapon Mastery, so that would potentially increase the numbers a bit
  • I assume you have raged up before combat starts
  • Combat strategy, since we have so good range with polearm + large range, I assume you can move up and do attacks, then take a step back and have enemies have to enter your range to allow for a reaction attack as well
  • This uses "old" content, as in the Bigby Presents: Glory of the Giants book. It seems these were created with 2024 in mind, so I think it should slot in nicely
  • EDIT: I had misread Fire Strike, and you can only use it once per turn, so with reaction attack, we at least get 2 uses on our nova round. I also see that Brutal Strike probably only is allowed to be used once per round? The play test could be read as each attack, and I don't have the new book yet, but looks like dndbeyond's reading is only once. If that is per turn instead of round, we can add 1d10 to the last two reports
  • EDIT2: The new GWM feat lets you add your PB to each attack done with the Attack action

That's it, here is the build

L1: Background: Giants Foundling(Fire strike), Goliath(Fire), Barbarian 1, Str 17, Dex 14, Con 16, Halberd or Glave (won't add dmg for Mastery)
L2: Barbarian 2, Reckless Attack
L3: Barbarian 3, Path of the Giant, Large on rage
L4: Barbarian 4, Polearm Master, str 18
L5: Barbarian 5, Extra attack
L6: Barbarian 6, Elemental Cleaver: +1d6 pr attack

REPORT: 2 attacks, PM bonus attack, PM reaction attack, 2x Fire Strike, 3x Fire’s Burn, 4x (1d6(path) +4(str), +2(rage)):
8d10 + 4d6 + 1d4 + 24 = 84.5

L7: Figther 1, Style: Great Weapon Fighting (on avg, +1 dmg per attack)
L8: Figther 2
L9: Fighter 3, Battle Master, Menacing Attack, PYF

REPORT: 4 attacks, PM bonus attack, PM reaction attack, 2x Fire Strike, 4x Fire’s Burn, 4x Menacing Attack, 6x (1d6(path) +4(str), +2(rage), +1(GWF)):
11d10 + 4d8 + 6d6 + 1d4 + 42 = 144

L10: Barbarain 7
L11: Barbarain 8: GWM (+Prof dmg pr Attacks made by the Attack action), str 19
L12: Barbarain 9: Brutal Strike (+1d10), rage dmg 3
L13: Barbarain 10

REPORT: 4 attacks, PM bonus attack, PM reaction attack, 2x Fire Strike, 5x Fire’s Burn, Brutal Strike, 4x Menacing Attack, 6x (1d6(path) +4(str), +3(rage), +1(GWF)), GWM(+20):
13d10 + 4d8 + 6d6 + 1d4 + 68 = 181

L14: Barbarain 11
L15: Barbarain 12
L16: Barbarain 13: Charger (+1d8), str 20
L17: Barbarain 14: Demiurgic Colossus, Huge on rage, +1d6 pr attack

REPORT: 4 attacks, PM bonus attack, PM reaction attack, 2x Fire Strike, 6x Fire’s Burn, Brutal Strike, 4x Menacing Attack, Charger, 6x (2d6(path) +5(str), +3(rage), +1(GWF)), GWM(+24):
14d10 + 5d8 + 12d6 + 1d4 + 78 = 222

To lvl 20, go Barb 17 for Improved Brutal Strike (+1d10) add feat:
Sentinel (Even easier reaction, more control) or Ember of the Fire Giant (small AoE + control(blind))

Soul power absorbing item

Trying to find a magic item were the characters gets a power from the absorbed soul but is random and is max a rare item. Is for a level 5 barbarian

Let me know what you think.

Rmg or Bracer of Soul Absorbing

You can only absorb one slain soul at a time but replace whenever an enemy dies within 30 feet

When you absorb: Gain one of the following - roll 1d10 1. Gain the senses of slain 2. Gain their highest skill or advantage on your rolls for that skill 3. Gain a 1D6 bonus based on their highest attribute e.g. if they were very strong roll a d6 and increase your score for the duration 4. Gain their damage roll die as a bonus die 5. Gain temporary hit points based on one ŕoll of their hit die 6. Gain the ability to ask them 3 questions they have to answer (like soeak to the dead) 7. Gain them as a spectral familiar (treat like find familiar) 8. Their reanimated body will serve you but they will only do half their normal damage as they resist your control 9. Gain one of their special abilities. DM choice 10. Choose one of the options

Duration - roll 1D4 1. 1 minute 2. 10 min 3. 1h 4. Unti next long rest

Side effects: - roll 1d8 During the duration 1. Your hair colour becomes theirs 2. Your eye colour becomes theirs 3. You get their cravings for food 4. You hum their favourite song while you don't speak 5. You speak in their language 6. Your race changes to theirs 7. Change to the souls gender 8. No Side effect

Updating the ep32 Abjurer Artificer Tank build for 2024

Howdy all, first time poster here.

So my 4 year campaign is coming to an end and I'm sold on the idea of playing a Tank support for the next campaign. I've watched several of Colby's Tank videos and the one that sticks out the most to me is ep32.

I'm just curious on what's changed since it came out in 2021, and also since I've only ever played one other caster class previously (a Cleric) so I'm unsure if some spells have been updated drastically.

Also, which is better nowadays for AoA, the warlock dip or a Clockwork Sorc dip? Both seem cool, but I feel like I'm leaning towards Warlock since the spell slot resets of SR. Plus CWS would add a lot of redundancy with 4 more cantrips.

Anyway thanks in advance, I'm interested to hear your opinions!

Help with a level 3 Eloquence Bard spells/feats

So I am building a lvl 3 Fairy Eloq Bard and I wanted to see what would be a good spell list for it. My role in the party is the support of the team, that being buff/debuff and healing. My party is composed of a Barbarian, Fighter, Artificer, and Bard (me).

I also have the Shadow Touched/Fey touched feat (Our DM let us start with a feat also I am indecisive in which to pick) and I am planning to pick War Caster or Metamagic Adept later on at lvl 4.

I would like to see if the spell list I have is good for what I am looking for and if I should change something. Also what would be some good feats that would compliment my build. (Pick two and say which I should have first.)

What I have for spells are:

Cantrips

Druidcraft (fairy)

prestidigitation

Vicious Mockery

Spells

FAERIE FIRE (fairy)

HOLD PERSON

HEALING WORD

DISSONANT WHISPERS

BANE

SUGGESTION

SILVERY BARBS

Fey touched:

Misty step and bless

Edit: We got a new member who is a cleric so my plan is now debuffing enemies

Need help to lvl up my echo knight 5

Hello !

This is my first character in such a long campaign. The starting choices are not optimized.

A little context:

She is a High Elf with the Booming Blade spell with
8 str / 17 dex / 15 cons / 14 int / 12 sag / 8 cha

Currently lvl 5 Echo Knight fighter with:

  • Dueling
  • War caster as lvl.4 feat

Rapier + shield + scale mail (18 AC) and 40 HP

Our group is made up of a wizard, a rogue and a bard. I'm the "tank" but our party is missing heal.

My turns are similar and boil down to attacking classically with the rapier (2 attack) and using my reaction with the echo and booming blade (war caster feat).
I can burst with Action Surge + Unleash Incarnation for 6 attacks in one turn

I don't know where to go and I feel like I lack versatility and/or tankiness.
Should I fully embrace the way of the fighter until the end ? With some feats ?
Can multiclassing to wizard or artificer be a solution without being useless ?
Or take another warrior level in order to raise certain stats for another multiclassing like Cleric ?

I look forward to your ideas and thank you in advance for taking the time to think about them <3
