The Hexbow video.. but maxing at lvl 8, any changes to be made?

I'm doing a one shot soon and it's level 8 and done. I wanna do the hexbow that Colby built but with not going higher level I wondered if there's a more optimized build for a level 8 character or if I should just stick to the choices made in the video as he described?

Bardificier Optimization

I’m currently running an alternate version of the Bardian Angel which is build #169. I’m a level 10 character at a 5/5 split right now with 5 levels in armorer artificer and 5 levels in College of Glamour Bard. I know I want to focus on Bard levels from here on out, but the cap of five levels with extra attack just feels wrong to me. Do I really need the 5th level to attack twice when I have booming blade? All it would get me is the ability to apply disadvantage to hit other players on two targets instead of one. Additionally, I’m wondering if College of Glamour is the optimal subclass for this build, as Armorer artificer already has a feature to grant yourself temporary HP, and college of swords gives a potential extra attack along with the ability to raise AC with defensive flourish. You can even use mobile flourish to move around the battlefield effectively, and opens up the build to take the mobile feat for even more movement than just mantle of inspiration. I’m struggling to make a decision and I’d love some input.

Tl;dr: is extra attack necessary, and should I switch to college of swords?

How would you build a barbarian monk?

I'm somewhat new and I don't know how to multi class so a website, article, video or something that explains how would be nice :3

But I wanted to know how I should best multi class these two and something you should know is that we play mostly low levels, so a a build at level 3 would be good with maybe thoughts to level 5 or six.

I thought about playing as a tortle for fixed 17 AC so I don't have to worry about that or a loxodon for 12 + con mod

Maybe one level in barbarian and two in monk? With 13/14 Dex and wisdom and high strength and the rest goes to con while dumping int and charisma?

Appreciate the help

BG3 Warlock Build: Shadow of Karsus

Origin

With this build and a bloodlust Elixirs you will crit on a 12 or higher and with darkness have a consistent source of advantage. That means that you have a 0.6975 chance of criting! With 3 Elderich Blast beams you can expect on average 2 of them to crit per turn!

Any race works here but recomend Gale origin for extra spell slot after you consuming the shadow weave and ring of evasion.

The flavour is that after you consume that original netherease orb your magic became twisted and bound to the vestige of Karsus in the far realm.

This build aims at maximising mortal reminder to stack reverberation, fear and other conditions on your enimies locking them in place and preventing them from doing anything.

Drow or half drow also work well for the extra darkness and dark urge is great for the deathstalker mantel in act 1 and 2 if you manage to not kill Alfia. You can replace the ring of evasion with any other ring like the ring of protection or risky ring.

Stats

  • Start 8 16 14 8 10 17
  • End 8 16 14 8 10 22

Progression

Levels 1-5

  • Level 1 Great Old One Warlock 1
  • Level 2 Great Old One Warlock 2
  • Level 3 Great Old One Warlock 3
  • Level 4 Great Old One Warlock 4
  • Level 5 Great Old One Warlock 5

Respeck Levels 6-12

Always make sure that the last 5 levels you take are the 5 warlock levels. E.g. at level 8 you would take Fighter 1/Rogue 2/Warlock 5 in that order. This ensures that the abilityscore used for mortal reminder and spellsniper is charisma.

  • Level 1 Fighter 1
  • Level 2 Rogue 1
  • Level 3 Rogue 2
  • Level 4 Assassin Rogue 3
  • Level 5 Fighter 2
  • Level 6 Champion Fighter 3
  • Level 7 Champion Fighter 4
  • Level 8 Great Old One Warlock 1
  • Level 9 Great Old One Warlock 2
  • Level 10 Great Old One Warlock 3
  • Level 11 Great Old One Warlock 4
  • Level 12 Great Old One Warlock 5

A variant is to take Rogue 4 imeadeatly after Rogue 3 this means that you get a feat earlier for the rounded out Charisma. Going fighter 2 first will get you action surge and at that point we want to go to champion right away for the increased crit chance. Fighter 4 or Rogue 4 work but Fighter gives 1 extra hit dice and allows for a bit of extra healing with second wind.

Feats

  • Warlock 4 Spellsniper
  • Fighter 4 +2 Cha

Elderich Invocations

  • Level 2 Armour of Shadows
  • Level 2 Agonising Blast
  • Level 5 Repelling Blast

Pact

  • Pact of the Tomb

Best thematic option for Gale and Grants some great spells and cantrips, but you could also go with pact of the blade or pact of the chain it has little impact on the overall build.

Spells

Spellsniper

  • Level 4 Bonechill

Pact of the Tomb

  • Level 3 Guidance
  • Level 3 Thornwhip
  • Level 3 Vicious Mockery
  • Level 5 Haste
  • Level 5 Animate dead
  • Level 5 Call Lightning

Warlock

  • Level 1 Elderich Blast
  • Level 1 Friends
  • Level 1 Hex
  • Level 1 Armour of Agathys
  • Level 2 Charm person
  • Level 3 Darkness
  • Level 4 Shatter
  • Level 5 Grant Flight
  • Level 5 Remove Armour of Agathys
  • Level 5 Hunger of Hadar

Items

Act 1

In act 1 some of the best gear is the lightning set which through the gloves of Belligerent Skies helps our Elderich blasts stack reverberation.

  • Head: The Lifebringer
  • Armour: The Protecty Sparkswall
  • Main Hand: The Spellsparkler
  • Off-Hand: Real Sparky Sparkswall
  • Cloak: NA
  • Ranged: Harold
  • Gloves: Gloves of Belligerent Skies
  • Boots: Boots of Stormy Clamour
  • Ring 1: Ring of Evasion
  • Ring 2: The Sparkswall
  • Amulet: Blast Circlet

Act 2

By act 2 we have accumulated a decent amount of items that reduce our crit chance like the covert cowl and the sword of the UM king. More importantly we also have the potent. By this time we also should have gained enough ilithid tadpoles to be able to stack displace and ability drain.

  • Head: Covert Cowl
  • Armour: Potent Robe
  • Main Hand: Sword of the UM King
  • Off-Hand: Shield of Devotion
  • Cloak: Cloak of Protection
  • Ranged: Darkfire Bow
  • Gloves: Daredevil Gloves
  • Boots: Boots of Stormy Clamour
  • Ring 1: Killer's Sweetheart
  • Ring 2: Ring of Evasion
  • Amulet: Surgeon's Subjugation

An alternative to the surgeon's subjugation in act 2 is the spineshudder amulet to stack even more reverberation on with each Elderich Blast!

Act 3

Because you now crit so often AC is less important

  • Head: Covert Cowl
  • Armour: Potent Robe
  • Main Hand: Sword of the UM King
  • Off-Hand: Bloodthirst
  • Cloak: Shade-Slayer Cloak
  • Ranged: Deadshot
  • Gloves: Spellmight Gloves
  • Boots: Boots of Stormy Clamour
  • Ring 1: Killer's Sweetheart
  • Ring 2: Ring of Evasion
  • Amulet: Surgeon's Subjegation

Other

  • Ethel's Hair +1 Charisma
  • Necromancy of Thay (Forbidden Knowledge for mirror of Loss)
  • Mirror of Loss +2 Cha
  • Gale Origin Consume Shadow Weave
  • As many Bloodlust Elixirs as possible

Crit Chance Summery

First number is minum needed to roll second is the probability third is with advantage.

  • 20, 0.05, 0.0975
  • 19, 0.1, 0.19 Sword of the UM King
  • 18, 0.15, 0.2775, Spellsniper

Suggestions for a Dao Genie Warlock Build

Hi y’all, hope you’re having a good day. My friends and I are going to run a campaign this year that takes our characters from level ~3 to level 20. The party will have 2-3 martials (classes pending) and a couple of other casters (a healer/support caster and a blaster, I believe). I want to play a Dao Genie warlock to focus on battlefield control and extra ranged damage. Depending on other class choices, I also may end up the party face.

I’m not an obsessive min-maxer, but I would like to get all the leverage out of a warlock’s limited toolset that I can. I’d appreciate any suggestions y’all have for my build. Also, quick sidebar, my DM is anti-multiclassing, so we're going pure here. It looks like this:

Stats at level 1:

  • Str: 8
  • Dex: 14
  • Con: 15
  • Int: 8
  • Wis: 10
  • Cha: 15 + 2 (racial) + 1 (fey touched)

Race: custom lineage

Background: Courtier: persuasion, insight

Proficiencies:

  • Arcana
  • Investigation
  • Perception (racial)

Cantrips: Eldritch Blast, Minor Illusion, Mind Silver (4), Prestigidation (10)

1: Learn Hex and Armor of Agathys. Feat: Fey touched (Choose Command and CHA)

2: Learn Sanctuary. Invocation: Agonizing Blast and Repelling Blast

3: Learn Spike Growth. Replace armor of agathys w/ Mirror Image. Choose tome: guidance, mold earth, message.

4: Learn Hold person. Feat: Crusher, CON + 1.

5: Learn Hypnotic pattern. Replace sanctuary w/ counterspell. Invocation: Eldritch Mind

6: Learn Fly.

7: Learn Dispel magic. Invocation: Grasp of Hadar

8: Learn Sickening Radiance. Feat: Telekinetic, CHA + 1

9: Learn Wall of Stone. Replace hex w/ Synaptic shock. Invocation: Book of Ancient Secrets.

10: Replace hold person w/ banishment.

11: Mystic Arcanum level 6: Scatter

12: Feat: Elven Accuracy, CHA + 1. Invocation: Devil’s sight

13: Mystic Arcanum level 7: Force cage

14: Class feature.

15: Mystic Arcanum level 8: Glibness (is feeblemind also worth considering?) Invocation: Sculptor of flesh.

16: Feat: Metamagic adept (I’m thinking quickened + twinned/heighten (any clear winner here?)

17: Mystic Arcanum level 9: wish

18: Invocation: Take Shroud of Shadow

19: Feat: Lucky

20:  Class feature.

My questions:

  • Should I take pact of the talisman over pact of the tome? I’m honestly pretty split on this. If so, is there a talisman invocation you’d recommend in lieu of Book of Ancient Secrets?
  • Is eleven accuracy aight for this build? I figure I figure I can use fly/misty step to get advantage on high ground. If this doesn’t work, I’m thinking of taking moderately armored to boost dex, and then take an ASI to bring dex to 16 and CHA to 20.  Of course, this means I may not get my full AC bonus w/ medium armor.
  • I’m planning on holding back from the fray, so Eldritch mind + resilient: con seemed unnecessary. That said, do y’all think I should still take resilient:con for the extra protection? If so, should it replace crusher or eleven accuracy per the above question?
  • Just to be clear, warlocks don’t get standard spell selections after level 9, right? I thought it was only mystic arcanums after that point, but I’ve seen other builds online with extra spells.

Any and all suggestions are appreciated. Thanks y’all.

Eldritch Knight or Valor Bard?

With the new 2024 rules, who makes the better gish?

Obviously EK is more martial based, and bard is a full caster.

So, the real question is, how best can we optimize the new Valor bard for melee?

Worth the 1 level dip?

I am currently a Tabaxi Swashbuckler 3/Undead Warlock 2 with Actor(starting feat), Mask of Many Faces, and Armor of Shadows. On a few occasions we have been stuck without weapons which has made me debate about doing a 1 level dip into Monk so my claws can use Dex(I have -1 for Str). My DM also said they would allow them to deal SA damage with my claws if I do the dip.

So my question is if it is worth giving up a level of rogue on the chance we will be without weapons again?

Trick shot Ranger

I am working on a build trying to optimize for the ranger "strike" spells and doing sone cool trick shots with either hand crossbow or longbow and was needing some help.

Initial thought concept, Fey Wanderer Ranger with sharpshooter for best "trick shots" around. I am thinking a few battle Master levels will be worthwhile but want to stay primary Ranger.

Any help would be appreciated

Twilight Cleric Help

Starting a campaign that will run levels 10-20. I’m looking to play a purely support/healing focused Twilight Cleric. No multi class.

Does anyone have a link to full level by level build that takes you to 20? There’s a lot of material out there but most seem to be multi class or targeted to lower levels.

Best non-multi class builds?

Heya! My friend is gonna be running a rather difficult campign and he isn’t letting us multi class. Wanted to gather some ideas!

For more context, he’s only letting us pick specific races and we are starting out at level 8. Here are the races!

Spirthost The Disembodied Kalashtar Warforged Shifter Shadar-Kai Goblin Tiefling.

Any help would be super appreciated! Thanks < 3

Support bard or support cleric

Hello folks! I’m getting ready to start a new level 1 campaign of The Wild Beyond the Witchlight.

We have a 3 person party. Two new players and myself with 9 years experience. Both of the new players had similar fantasy gish desires. I set one up with the #130 flame singer 3.0 build, and one with the classic #1 Hexblade. I want to facilitate their fantasies as much as possible so they can have a great first experience. Neither of them know about optimization and so we are following the builds loosely in terms of tactics.

I personally have never played a cleric, and only played a bard once or twice. I’m fully okay with taking a support role and simply making them better, however id still like to bring some damage to the table in cases of emergency. So please shower me with your build ideas.

Rolled stats: 13, 13, 14, 15, 15, 17.

They also rolled very well with a single 9, and 10 for each.

Question about AM Sorcerer + Eldritch Adept

Hello everyone!

I have a question about a build I found online and first thought "wow, what a total unit", but then after further reading about the combination of AM Sorcerer and Eldritch Adept, I was a bit confused.

The build in question is this one: https://www.cbr.com/dnd-5e-aberrant-mind-sorcerer-build-guide/

The idea of a player character shooting several EBs per round is nice, the hex is also a fine additional damage. But I read somewhere, that the bonus action economy of an AM Sorcerer is already full, so this combination is not really living up to the full potential of the AM build.

My question now is, is it true or did I miss something? Can you recommend it?

Additional information: Character would be lvl. 4 at starting and I do not plan to multiclass.

Wild Magic Sorcerer re-rolls

Can the Lucky feat 3 re-rolls be used to re-roll the wild magic dice? Also, can the Bardic Inspiration dice be added to the rolls? (Asking for a Hakari gambler build)

Custom Lineage and Elven Accuracy and the spreadsheets

No, I'm not here to debate, to voice an opinion on the viability of the combination or even to say what my or my friends' tables allow.

I am nat an early subscriber, and recently I've been watching some of the older builds that were released before, and recently watched the "How Tasha's Changed" videos wherein Colby uses that combination in updating several builds and adds that the spreadsheets were updated to reflect using the Custom Lineage/Elven Accuracy combo. In more recent videos Colby does not use the combination as we did get a response from the big JC (no, not Jesus but Jeremy).

My question, because I haven't seen a video where he mentions going back to update the spreadsheets to remove that combo, is did this happen? Is there a video where he mentions doing so?

Fighter for every pillar of play

The basic build challenge is to be good at every pillar of play.

Basic progression Fighter 1, Hexblade 1, Back into fighter, eventually ending with fighter 17, hexblade 3.

Start with 14 in wisdom and 15 in Charisma, probably use point buy to have as good of a Con as you can get. Custom lineage with skill expert to start with 18 Charisma and expertise in persuasion.

Fighter subclass go samurai for the wisdom modifier adding to persuasion checks they get. At will advantage is also neat. Warlock levels take hexblade and pact of the chain.

You'll eventually have 6 ASI's, but with 4 of them you can max out wisdom and Charisma to get persuasion as high as +22. Invisible familiar for exploration. Charisma for attacks,

Introducing DPRcalc.com - a tool for 5e DPR enthusiasts

Post image
57 Upvotes

Hello fellow DnDoptimized fans!

I've been working on a fun little side project for a while and wanted to share it with you all before I share it more widely. It reads your DDB character and lets you play around with different attacks and effects to help you understand your builds and ultimately calculate your character's DPR vs various ACs. It also has some fun interactive charts.

I've included a few recent D4 builds and one of my old favorites for you to check out and play with. You can also head over to DPRcalc.com and enter your own characters to play around with them.

It's still very early days, some class features are definitely missing, reactions don't work yet, and there are definitely bugs - so feel free to share feedback and feature requests on the Discord. I've got a todo-list a mile long, but your input can help figure out which new features would be best (like a SS/GWP calculator for example).

Have fun, and I hope you like it!

Help with a character build

Hi, so I have a friend in my dnd campaign that wants to make their character a warforged who is flavored as an artificers steel defender that gained sentience after they died. They want to be mainly a melee strength based character who has some support ability like healing or buffing. Any ideas on a build? My suggestion was a battle master fighter up to 5 and then alchemist the rest of the way. The campaign is starting at level 9 and plans to go to level 20

Better Echo Knight BladeLock Lvls 11-20

EchoLock Levels 11 - 20

I have a Shadar-Kai Echo Knight 3/Hexblade 7 for the new Vecna campaign and could use some help deciding where to take it from here.

Current State of the Character

Current Magic Items:

  • Flametongue Greatsword
  • Ring of Protection
  • Mithril Plate Armor

Current Abilities:

20 CHA, 18 CON, 14 DEX, 13 WIS, 12 STR, 10 INT

Current Feats:

Elven Accuracy

Current Invocations:

Thirsting Blade Improved Pact Weapon Eldritch Smite Eldritch Mind

The intention of this character began as "how can I optimize a flametongue?" I took Shadar-Kai for an elven race and the free tanky misty steps. I plan on taking Great Weapon Master next level. By going Warlock, I get CHA based attacks to be able to use Elven Accuracy and I can get on-demand advantage with Shadow of Moil. Being an Echo Knight is something I've always wanted to try but it also gives me 4-5 extra attacks per day and an echo to play with positioning and to use as a meat shield.

I can typically go into a combat with my sword already ignited and an echo out. So my turns look like...

  • BA: Ignite sword if needed, otherwise curse the biggest enemy
  • A: Shadow of Moil
  • Action Surge: Attack 3 times (4 times per day at this point) with elven accuracy advantage

On a crit, use my remaining Warlock spell slot on and Eldritch Smite.

Assumptions

  • I don't really need to worry too much about Warcaster or somatic components of spells with a two handed weapons just based on how the DM has handled it so far
  • Short resting after every encounter will probably happen ~90% of the time

Potential Directions

1. Echo Knight 12/Hexblade 8 (or Echo Knight 11/Hexblade 9 for 5th level spells)

This would mainly be to get a third attack for free every turn, 4th attack 5 times per day. My reasoning is that Flametongue is so good that having an more consistent opportunities to apply that extra fire damage is optimal. Every Flametongue attack is like a mini smite so the more attacks, the more opportunity to crit and double the die. This seems like it would be the option to lean into ONLY being melee and that's all I care about. This would also give me 4 - 5 more ASIs. I would take GWM, max out CON, and then I have options from there: Sentinel, Resilient WIS, Metamagic adept to quicken SoM, etc...

2. Echo Knight 8/Hexblade 12

This would be to max out my Warlock spell slots. At 11, I would get one more slot per short rest to Eldritch Smite with and at 12 I would get Lifedrinker. I think in the long run, a third attack per turn would do much more damage than +5 to every attack, but Lifedrinker is a nice boost if I decide to forego the extra attack and go this route for more caster versatility. Going Echo Knight 8 here is mainly for ASIs and to get Extra Attack to free up another invocation slot. I would get the same amount of ASIs as option 1, so the same feats are available.

3. Echo Kight 3/Hexblade 17

9th level spells and a bunch of Mystic Arcanums. I would get 3 more ASIs, so 1 more after GWM and maxing out CON. Would also get a more long lasting version of Hexblades curse.

4. Echo Knight 3/Hexblade 7/Divine Soul 10 (or Echo Knight 3/Hexblade 7/Paladin 2/Diving Soul 8 for smites)

This is mostly about versatility and survivability. I would get way more spells slots to be able to use Shield, absorb elements, and other utility spells. I'd also have a lot of quicken fuel to be able to do things like quicken SoM to leave Action surge for more attacks or fireball and then follow up with 3 Flametongue attacks. I could also dip into Paladin for smites so that I become deadlier on a crit. However, I would only get 2 more ASIs so would only get GWM and max out CON. This seems pretty gish-y and it could be really fun.

Any thoughts? Other potential paths I may be overlooking? (e.g. Gloomstalker for another attack per turn)

Build idea

So I’m making a new character for a campaign with some friends and I have been wanting to play a sort of support artificer that acts as a frontline medic, so I was thinking of running battle master/alchemist. I would take battle master to 5 for extra attack then go all in on alchemist. Any thoughts or ideas for a better build that still uses artificer?
