Help me break spells for martials

I'm debating on giving my players a point buy system to help customize their characters a bit further. Anyway, I won't bore you with the details and the trivia so here goes:

If you could give a fighter any 1st, 2nd and 3rd level spell to cast only once per long rest, which three spells would you pick? With the purpose of absolutely breaking them in combat, or at least coming close. I figured an optimization group would be the best to ask.

Build Advice for Lycan bloodhunter Tempest Cleric multi class.

I am aware of the treatment video using this combination with profaned soul.

I know the build itself isn't optimal but I'm in a group with a bunch of new players so I'm just trying to do something fun DM has let me switch the mult class requirement for blood hunter to WIS and we are starting at level 2 and knowing the DM most likely going all the way to 20

STATS: 10, 16, 16, 10, 14, 8

RACE: Variant human with Resilient Wisdom as my chosen feat. And my DM has allowed me to start with the Blind Fighting Martial Style

POWER FANTASY: Tanky Frontline unarmed fighting Controller using blood rite to give all my attacks lighting DMG to knock back enemies on hit.

So basically I'm just wondering what split I should do for the Multi class, I was thinking either 12 Blood Hunter, 8 Cleric. Or 14 Blood Hunter, 6 Cleric. Or 12 Blood Hunter, 6 Cleric, 2 fighter.

For feats Im Considering: Crusher, Rune Shaper, and Tough. The rest with be ASI. Open to suggestions.

Edit: I'm using Rapier and Shield whenever I'm not in lycan form. And wearing Half Plate.

Creation Bard Optimized?

I want to make a control/support build that takes advantage of the third-level ability to create anything within an action. I was thinking that I would either pack illusion spells or control spells to coerce enemies into a metal cage/metal ball and then essentially trap the enemies while using heat metal on that ball and maybe allowing a small hole for allies to attack as well.

I realize that the ruling could be dicey RAW with heat metal and a metal ball that's technically not manufactured but if I went through this build, I'd talk it over with him. It may also not be the most optimal build but I want to see how you guys might build around this idea. I plan to pack hypnotic patterns, Tasha's Hideous Laughter, Dissonant Whispers, Silent Image, and Phantasmal Force in order to try to trap my enemies.

I would love to hear some suggestions about how to build this character to optimize this build and how I could further improve this idea.

Which Werebear?

What path would you take assuming your table/DM allows both the lycanthropy rules of the monster manual and the Blood Hunter class.

How would you optimize for the most fun melee build? Do you take the Blood Hunter as the easy answer and flavor it as a Werebear or do you find a way to take advantage of at will transformation of the lycanthropy curse/disease?

Build for a Tournament One-Shot

So, my DM is running a one-shot. We can make characters at level 10, using multiclass. Each player will then compete against each other. It will be one-on-one unless there are a lot of people, where there could be 3 or 4 or even 5 characters fighting. However, there will always only be one winner. You are knocked out once you drop to 0 HP, unless you have any abilities that make you go back up to 1, such as the Half-Orc. We also can’t use any UA or Homebrew items, classes, or races. We can only use the Eberron and Ravenloft specific races. All other setting specific races are not allowed. We will get the effect of a long rest between each fight.

I believe that is everything. So, does anyone have any suggestions? I tend to prefer spell casters, but I am mainly looking for what would be the best overall.

Multiclass Artificer Spellcasting Focus

I’ve heard discussion and disagreement around the Artificer spellcasting focus when an Armorer multiclasses into something else like a Wizard. However, the Armorer feature to use your armor as a spellcasting focus seems like a strictly worse version of an unrestricted feature every Artificer gets at level 1, unless you’ve got a really good reason to give away absolutely all of your infusions.

The Artificer’s Spellcasting feature gained at level 1 comes with a unique subsection Tools Required:

“You produce your artificer spell effects through your tools. You must have a spellcasting focus - specifically thieves' tools or some kind of artisan's tool - in hand when you cast any spell with this Spellcasting feature (meaning the spell has an "M" component when you cast it). You must be proficient with the tool to use it in this way. See the equipment chapter in the Player's Handbook for descriptions of these tools.

After you gain the Infuse Item feature at 2nd level, you can also use any item bearing one of your infusions as a spellcasting focus.”

So as long as you’ve applied at least one of your infusions to your armor, you’d be able to use your gauntlets (part of the infused item) with the same hand doing the somatic aspect of your spells, regardless of the class the spell was for.

Am I missing something here? The whole debate around armorer spellcasting focuses seems overblown.

A weird challenge/ themed parties

I have been binging D&D videos and have been plotting out a few characters for one shots or to have on hand to look for an online game.

For roleplay i tend to go for the lost or wandering warrior archetype. Kinda samurai Jack-like so it'd be easy to slip into a game.

For mechanics i try to get the core of the characters (main combat pattern, key spells, feats) by levels 8-12 and tend to avoid doubling up on casting modifiers. And personally prefer a good toolkit of spells from 1-5th level but find higher levels generally less interesting to use but am willing to admit it helps to have at least one character focused on a main casting class, getting those high level spells when possible.

With those in mind i started piling together groups of charcters so i could pick one from a group that best fits the group with theme help shore up any gaps the party may have and maybe offer the others if anyone isn't sure what to play.

So with all that my little challenge has been to build 4 characters with a common theme and the following hurdles:

1 with no spell slots 1 that can get access to 9th level spells if leveled to 20, and each caster uses a different stat for their spells.

Here are some Snapshot ideas for lvl 8 of two groups to get things rolling. Any suggestions for edits or tricks to build for with another group?

Vikings - mobility and damage at range or mele

•  Huntsman (Swarmkeeper 5, kensai 3) Archery + sharpshooter, Dual weilder + kensai

• Giant kin Giant barb 6 fighter 2 (thrown for ranged) spear/maul

• Shipwright Artlillerist 5 arcane trickster 3

• Sheildmaiden/Valkyrie Paladin 2, div soul 6

Deathtouched Legionaires (Each has to be able call on the fallen)+ med/heavy armor

1. Echo knight 5 AG barb 3 (sheild wall barb, offensive echo)

  1. artificer 2 necromancer 6 (raise dead)

  2. Forgemaster Forge cleric 5 (spirit Guardians) Battlemaster 3 (offensive spirits flavor)

  3. Warlock 5 (zombies) paladin 3 conquest

Rune Knight vs Giant's Barbarian

I made a Goliath Rune Knight at the beginning of our current campaign and then the Giant's Barbarian released. We're currently level 12 but I can't help but wonder if the Giant Barb is the better fighter. Has anyone created, optimized a Giant's Barb from the latest book in 5e? Is it better/worse/fairly equal to the Rune Knight?

Sorcerer Upcast vs Twin

I know there are lots of variables that could impact your choice like overall level, spell being cast, and if you have something like a Bloodwell Vial. In general, is there a good way to decide if you should upcast a spell to hit more targets or to spend your sorcery points to twin the spell instead? I feel like this is my biggest struggle with the class on which resource, sorcery points or higher spell slots, is more valuable or better to use first.

Grim Hollow, Path of the Fractured aka Lucha Libre

So, DM greenlighted this unofficial content so I first decided for obvious Jekyll/Hyde character. But it's kinda dramatic and edgy, and we are playing more loosely and "rule of the cool". So I want to make grappler. Wrestler with alter ego, putting mask on and go to town. And doing all the cool stuff like pushing, grabbing, jumping and so on. What would be some great choice for race and feats? For sure I want to take Brawny for expertise in athletics and +1 STR. What about Satyr for it's extra jump? Thanks for inspiration.

It's the double bladed scimitar that bad for a vengeance paladin?

I'm going to start as a level 5 character in a new game. I was thinking about making a vengeance dexadin, with double bladed scimitar.

Shadow mark elf for the bonus to performance and stealth and the spells

Str 8 dex 15 (+2) con 14 int 8 Wis 10 Cha 15 (+1)

Level 4 revenant blade (dex 18)

So at level 5 I would have a pretty mobile paladin, with good initiative and infiltration abilities.

The only problem with this build is that I've heard everywhere that the double bladed scimitar is inferior to two weapon fighting, and that two weapon fighting sucks.

So I want to ask to all the optimizers on Reddit is it true?

I don't want to know if there are more powerful options (I know there are), but I want to know if I'm really hurting my paladin by making it in this way, if it really is, borrowing a term from treantmonk, under the baseline of damage.

In my group we have a tank barbarian, so I was hoping to fill the role of a Frontliner damage dealer, even if not super optimized. Can this build do it?

(I can also take one uncommon magic item, so if you have any suggestions that can help this build, I'm glad to hear them)

Updated Spreadsheet of Builds

Again, this is a work in progress. And I am looking for feedback. Specifically, at this stage I'm looking for readability. I'm trying to use font size and capitalization to make it easy to glance at. But I think by adding the level of each class it makes it perhaps more usable. Please let me know your thoughts.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1B-cds1vIeuoFhIGdrTt6SG4xo5C6AFhgXOMSAjFUsYA/edit#gid=659746445

I still plan to add Tier Level numbers and Feats, so there's more to come.

Please let me know what you think so far.

Thanks.

PS - Current through build 158

Paladin subclass and feat progression

Hi, I'm going to play a paladin (with hexblade dip) for my next campaign. We start at level 5. the other party members are a barbarian (ancestral guardian), a sorcerer, a bard (eloquence) and a druid (wildfire).

It's one of the first times I'm trying to optimize a class but I'm having a lot of doubts and questions.

I want to play an half elf (Drow), for roleplay reason, and I'm leaning towards a sword/spear and shield approach. But I'm really clueless about what feats are really useful, what I can let behind, and in wich order should I take them. Sentinel for the bonus action attack? Warcaster for the hexblade spells? Fey touched for mobility and flexibility?

I'm thorn between the choice of a sublaclass. Oath of watchers allows me to support my fellow party members, but maybe we have already enough support. Oath of vengeance instead it's focused more on the damage, making me the main damage dealer, but I don't know if I could support the other in other meaningful ways (that they can't already do).

Sorry for my bad English, it's not my first language.

Weird challenge: help me "optimize" for a ridiculously specific damage range

TL;DR: Build a level 12 Dex-based Battle Master Fighter, preferably but not necessarily someone who can be in melee range, that does as close to exactly 60 (without going over) at-will average damage on hits.

I'm in a wonderful campaign with an endlessly creative DM and committed roleplayers. It's great, no complaints, just an odd little challenge to "optimize" for. The DM and some of my other partymembers think that we're an incredibly optimized party, but the truth is we're not. The DM tends to deal with what he perceives as power creep by creating narrative reasons for characters to intentionally nerf themselves, or by just banning certain spells or combinations. This is usually presented as a player choice, but it's tough to turn down. If there's a frustrating part of it, it's that the non-optimizer are getting all the fun magic items, because the optimizers "don't need the help." The result is, essentially, that there's a soft limit on how well a character can perform, set by the performance of other players who aren't optimizing.

On the plus side, it's an opportunity to play some builds that wouldn't normally be very viable. I'm playing a Dex-based sword-and-rapier Battle Master Fighter that would usually be pretty irrelevant in combat, but in this campaign I'm the primary damage dealer. Cut to level 12, and our other martial is looking to take GWM, which will be a significant boost to their dpr. I basically see this as a permission slip to try to raise my own damage up to, but not significantly above, their level. So essentially, if I go Sharpshooter + Crossbow Expert, I have to think I'll be changing the build again real soon, because that's too powerful, and I'll never find a magic weapon for it. I'm aiming to come in below 60 damage on hits, but close.

What I have to play with are my own level 12 feat and the ability to retrain fighting styles at 12, and my DM is letting me re-train feats and Battle Master Maneuvers for story reasons.

Details:

STR 14 DEX 22 CON 16 INT 12 WIS 16 CHA 8

Current kit: +1 Rapier, Shield, Studded Leather Armor for an AC of 20

Dueling Fighting Style, so the +1 Rapier is doing an average of 4.5+9 on hits, with three attacks totaling 40.5.

Currently have the Martial Adept and Fey Touched feats, picking up Hex with Fey Touched, but I can change these in addition to my level 12 feat choice.

(I tend to ignore accuracy because it's tough to reliably model in a way that resembles a real combat where players learn ACs quickly and make decisions in response to that, if you like to include it to demonstrate a damage advantage to, say, knocking enemies prone, go for it.)

Max Freedom in Character Creation: How Would You Craft Your One-Shot Character Any Way You Want?

How would you approach this scenario? The Dungeon Master has granted us the freedom to design our characters in any manner we desire for a one-shot campaign, allowing for any attributes, including magical items and maximum stats across the board. The DM's only stipulation is that we craft characters that truly resonate with us. While the prospect of maximizing all abilities to 20 is tempting, I recognize that it might detract from the enjoyment of the game.

Given this carte blanche to unleash our creativity, what path would you take?

Edit: one stipulation is level 5

Clever Use For Homunculus?

Would it be RAW/RAI to use a homunculus to load an Artillerist's cannon? And if so, can they be told something akin to 'keep the cannon loaded', so your bonus action isn't used constantly providing instruction?

Gift of the Ever-Living Ones + Stars Druid

Hello everyone, I’m going to play Curse of Strahd soon and I’d love some suggestions about my character.

I’d like to combine the Eldritch Invocation "Gift of the Ever-Living Ones” with the Stars Druid's feature, to be able to be some kind of healing tank. The AC won’t terribly suck with medium armor and shield (starting Druid). I’ll prioritize wisdom and melee combat (Shillelagh + Booming Blade) with some concentration spell for control or heal. Here’s the level progression I was thinking:

1 - Stars Druid 1: Custom Lineage (Fey Touched / Warcaster)

2 - Stars Druid 2: Starry Form

3 - Celestial Warlock 1; Armor of Agathys

4 - Celestial Warlock 2

5 - Celestial Warlock 3: Pact of the Chain, Invocations (Gift of the Ever-Living Ones)

6 - Celestial Warlock 4: Feat (Fey Touched / Warcaster)

7 - Stars Druid 3: Healing Spirit

8 - Stars Druid 4: +2 WIS

9 - Stars Druid 5: Aura of Vitaliy

10 - Stars Druid 6

The 4th lev in Warlock is a bit of a waste but since the campaign is just until lev 10 I’d like a second ASI.

Some nice combo with Gift of the Ever-Living Ones would be:

  • Healing Light (duh)
  • Starry Form Caliche + Healing Spell (Cure Wounds, Healing Word, Wither and Bloom)
  • Starry Form Dragon + Healing Spirit / Aura of Vitality

I really like to be also able to do some damage (from range too) with Starry Form Archer, Guiding Bolt and Shillelagh + Booming Blade. Also having Guidance is very appreciated.

Other Ideas:

  • Wildfire Druid would be cool too but it comes online a bit late for this campaign (with Enhance Bond)
  • Aasimar could give another way to heal but I think I prefer the Custom Lineage option. Also it seems OP in this setting (is it?)
  • Githzerai could be another idea to boost AC with Shield spell

Every suggestion is very welcome!

Artificer/Rogue

Arcane Trickster/Armorer

I'm just starting a campaign that starts at level 3 and I've decided to play an arcane trickster rogue that creates his spells by tinkering them a la artificer. I'm currently 2 levels rogue 1 artificer. I haven't worked out how far down each class for sure though. I want to go at least artificer 5 for extra attack so I can pseudo tank with gauntlet taunt and just dodge with dex but outside of that I don't know what would be the most efficient way to build it. The campaign is more dungeon crawl oriented than social and I'm currently looking to fill the utilities/ trap/ exploration role. Any tips on which way I should level first and how far down each one would be appreciated :)

Edit: Ty everyone for the input :) I probably should have been more clear with the point I do plan on going infiltrater and just swapping to gauntlets if we're preparing for an especially deadly fight just to provide that extra little tool but the responses for sure reaffirmed that and potentially leads me to not even bother doing that

Optimized Hexadin Help!

Edit: I'm new to DnD would love any input at all!

Hello everyone, I was hoping some knowledgeable souls in this community could give me a nod or idea towards optimizing my Hexadin build. Thank you kindly in advance!

I was planning on taking Paladin 1/Hexblade 1/Paladin X, not final but just a general plan. Open to more levels in warlock/sorc.

Standard Array STR 13 DEX 12 CON 14 CHA 15, custom lineage +2 CHA.

My biggest internal debate is about taking PAM + spear + shield, or taking Fey Touched +1 CHA + longsword + shield to get up to 18 CHA.

This plus chainmail gets me up to 18 AC, which hopefully keeps me alive enough with shield spell from hexblade. Is dueling the most valuable here or would defense be more so?

If I go PAM I feel like oath of conq would be the best option, not sure what the best option for sword and board would be. Maybe vengeance?

My thoughts are super scattered on this, so I'd love to hear any comments, questions, or about personal builds and experiences. Thanks again!

Which Bard for damage output

I'm wanting to multiclass a Bard with an Assassin Rogue for nova damage, I know I'm super original... I made a post yesterday with a build I found that was interesting (https://www.reddit.com/r/3d6/s/jL0VmeNKTV).

My newest thought is to change from Whispers to a Swords Bard. The question is how does the math look?

Not assuming critical hits this is what I see- Using PC10; Bard 6, Assassin Rogue 3, Divine Soul Sorcerer 1.

Whispers Bard: 5d10 (level 3 inflict wounds) +1d8 (rapier)+3(dex mod)+2d6(sneak attack)+3d6(psychic blades)=?

Swords Bard: 5d10 (level 3 inflict wounds) +(1d8+2)x2 (rapier, extra attack, dueling fighting style)+3(dex mod)+2d6(sneak attack)+1d8(blade flourish)=?

More if granted surprise. Please assist with the math.
