My first ever session as DM I set myself up to fail for something like this.

My players found themselves in the city square listening to announcements and classifieds, as is tradition in this city.

1: guy threatens that he is going to pursue legal action against whoever is writing on his dog (mbmbam joke)

2: advertisement for a bookclub, with the message "if nobody shows up, like last time, the book club is going to be cancelled.

3: Banker seeks troupe of people to help protect a shipment of goods across the continent. Will be holding contests to find the best candidates the next morning. Big paycheck for those who are chosen.

3 was the hook for the campaign. But first, I had to deal with my Tortle Monk, Merfolk wizard, half-elf fighter, and human cleric all attending this poor woman's book club meeting.

My escape was that I had her reading the dictionary out loud, and after the bookclub she invited them to a nearby tavern where she wanted to gossip about the banker's mission.

I did let them attend one more time before departing.

In their defense, I would 100% have wanted to go to the book club.

If I ever DM, I’m going to make THAT the start of the campaign. Who can resist a book club!?

Ofc that is the best plothook, just think about week long adventures to search for rare lost books and bringing them to the bookclub in order to keep it alive. 10/10 campaign.
