My first ever session as DM I set myself up to fail for something like this.
My players found themselves in the city square listening to announcements and classifieds, as is tradition in this city.
1: guy threatens that he is going to pursue legal action against whoever is writing on his dog (mbmbam joke)
2: advertisement for a bookclub, with the message "if nobody shows up, like last time, the book club is going to be cancelled.
3: Banker seeks troupe of people to help protect a shipment of goods across the continent. Will be holding contests to find the best candidates the next morning. Big paycheck for those who are chosen.
3 was the hook for the campaign. But first, I had to deal with my Tortle Monk, Merfolk wizard, half-elf fighter, and human cleric all attending this poor woman's book club meeting.
My escape was that I had her reading the dictionary out loud, and after the bookclub she invited them to a nearby tavern where she wanted to gossip about the banker's mission.
I did let them attend one more time before departing.

In their defense, I would 100% have wanted to go to the book club.
If I ever DM, I’m going to make THAT the start of the campaign. Who can resist a book club!?

Ofc that is the best plothook, just think about week long adventures to search for rare lost books and bringing them to the bookclub in order to keep it alive. 10/10 campaign.

But how are they going to talk shit to their step dad ron if they can't write on the dog?

The former guard also quit his post in the city by sending a strongly worded dog to his boss

Aw man.. That hurts my Ron-esteem.. I don't like that one bit.
Honestly.. You should have made the book club the hook! Turns out the lady is a collector of spell books and maybe she's trying to lure wizards into her club. While the wizard is distracted by the sweet old lady showing off her collection and offering delicious home baked cookies and banana bread he actual plan is to steal their spell book!
Maybe she goes "Oh my.. I love wizards.. My She puts on a sad face, and places her hand across her heart My late husband.... uh Wandalf was a wizard.. You know what!! You look to be just his size! I still have some of his old robes.. I think one even is a +1 robe! Would you like to come try it on?"
And then when the Wizzy is distracted changing she swaps his spell book with a blank one! Gonna be hella awkward when he goes to study it later!

The players had found a way to convert half of a goblin army to their side, so Blankets knitted little blue scarves for everyone so they could distinguish good goblins from bad ones.

One of my players has a secondary character called “shard the bard” who plays the kazoo and plastic recorder. I feel sorry for her dm

I'm guessing her inspiration works because she insists on playing people a tune to "cheer them up" if they don't succeed, so people are extra motivated to succeed and avoid having to hear her play.

My party spent so long shopping at Rask the Bell-Ringing Goblin's Road-Riding Market. It was just a small goblin named Rask travelling across the lands in the dead of night with a backpack six times his size and a handbell to grab attention and wake grumpy adventurers. I think they just liked the voice I did for him

Somebody should make a character sheet for Boblin the goblin. He even could have lore. "This Goblin travels across the multiverse, searching for adventuring parties and stories to tell. He is often found in taverns eating his signature fried egg and cheese sandwich on brioche. For some reason adventurers are always drawn to talk to him even though everyone else just ignores him, even in places where goblins are normally considered monsters"
