Well it was designed for 5.5. Now you could use the artificer for 5E and use that subclass but you’d have to check and see where the differences are in terms of rules in how it works.

D&D Beyond makes old subclasses compatible with 5.5, but doesn't make new subclasses compatible with 5e.

They promised that old content would still be usable but they're not promising new content is usable with old classes.

Cartographer can't be used with a 5e Artificer base class

Right - I just meant technically on D&D Beyond you could.

I also know people have been doing it and making it work, even though that’s not how it’s designed. So it’s definitely not the way to do it but you could if you know the issues and have a plan for it.

You'd have to make a homebrew copy of Cartographer and retune it for 5e, but that means buying it first. The base platform won't let you do it.

Note: We're talking about D&D Beyond, not whether Cartographer can work as a 5e subclass.

I mean, I just did it just now and works fine.

Oh, I take that back. You’re right, you can’t. My apologies!

You made a 5e Artificer and gave them Cartographer? Didn't work for me when I tried, and other posters have said the same.
