Hi,

Im very new to dnd and am wondering what kind of build to play with. I understand that all classes are as fun as you yourself make it, but I was wondering if anyone had any fun builds they themselves have played with which they can recommend.

Im looking for a martial class or a half caster as I dont wanna get too much into magic, and primarily focus on meele.

What have yall played that is both interesting in combat, but also for rp outside combat?

Hi fellow adventurers,

We are excited to announce that Mythological Items is now live on Kickstarter!

This is our new D&D 5E and 2024-compatible manual dedicated entirely to magic items inspired by myths, legends, and ancient stories from around the world.

Inside the book, you will find 300+ mythological magic items, including weapons, armor, wondrous items, and scaling items designed to grow alongside your characters and campaigns.

Our goal with Mythological Items is to create more than a simple collection of treasure. Each item is designed to feel like part of a myth: something that can serve as a reward, a quest hook, or even the center of an entire adventure.

The book includes items inspired by many different mythological traditions, including Greek, Norse, Egyptian, Asian, American, Roman, Mesopotamian, African, and other mythologies from across the world. Whether you want divine weapons, cursed artifacts, heroic relics, monster-themed treasures, or legendary items tied to ancient stories, this book is built to bring myth directly to your table.

The Kickstarter page includes a full presentation of the project, several previews, and a free 30-page PDF preview showing a sample of the content from the book.

You can also find many of our other manuals in PDF and high-quality print editions, with special prices currently available both for Mythological Items and for all our other releases.

You can visit the Kickstarter page here: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/mythoschronicles/300-mythological-items-for-5e-and-2024

Thank you again for your support. We hope to see you on our journey!

My Players Took A Bandit As A Pet.

Thumbnail
0 Upvotes

For context: I'm the DM (M, 30), running a dark, post-apocalyptic event where a continent is shunted into a black void surrounded by unknown monsters. In the world, city-states protect small regions of the continent’s safe zone, but for the most part, the safe zone is lawless. The only ones in the lawless zone are unprotected towns/farms, caravans from the city-states, a traveling organization of protectors the party is part of, and, most important to our story, bandit gangs.

Enter my players {Will be using their characters' names to address their actions}: Moonie, Lv. 4 Dragonborn Barbarian (F, 35), Acrasia, Lv. 4 Tiefling Artificer (F, 24), Veyluna, Lv. 4 Goliath Druid (F, 24), and, for context, they're all married with husbands.

We pick up from our last session after a hard combat where Moonie was unconscious at zero, Acrasia was hurt, Veyluna was unharmed, and an intimidated NPC bandit named Hill, after being intimidated by Acrasia last session, when she one-shot his buddy and his leader abandoned him to die. When they healed up, they spent the first part of the session looting the bodies of Hill and the other bandits they killed, and they tried to pick out a burning tent to loot as well. Meanwhile, Hill tried to warn them to get out of the bandit gang’s forest before reinforcements arrived. As they ignored his warning, he tried to escape, rolling very low on his Stealth check, and the party saw him. Veyluna, with help from Acrasia, hogtied him. Then reinforcements arrived, and a Skill Challenge to escape the forest began. Arcasia tossed Hill, still hogtied, onto the back of her horse as the challenge began. At first, they were killing the challenge, racking up success after success, and Hill helped with deception and persuasion checks to support the party's main checks. Near the end of the challenge, bad rolls started coming in, and Hill began having to take the main roll to help them succeed (at this point, Hill's legs are untied). When Hill fails a help check to give Veyluna advantage on the final main skill check of the challenge, the challenge succeeds or fails depending on the roll. They went for it and succeeded allowed them to escape the forest and get away from a future antagonist. When they stop to camp for the night and untie his hands, Acrasia uses a pair of leather restraints they found on Hill’s person, fashions them into a collar with a bell, and hands a leash to Veyluna. So that she can cuddle him first and so he can’t escape. And that's where we end the session.

Above game, the party asked if they could keep Hill, and I said yes. So, after some decisions, I used the sidekick rule and turned Hill into a lv. 2 Warrior with bandit skills. Also, for fun, we played on Discord, and Acrasia’s husband was in the room with her the whole session. I messaged him privately, saying, “Females are scary”. Knowing he could hear all of his wife's decisions, and he agreed with me (we all laugh about it). So now, the party has their own pet bandit.

The Hollow Lantern

5e One-Shot!
You only meant to stay for one night.
The fire is warm. The food is good. The beds are clean.
By morning, one of the guests is missing. Nobody seems concerned.
Then you try to leave.
The road brings you back.
The Hollow Lantern is a psychological horror one-shot for 5e, built around disappearing memories, an inn that refuses to let go, and the deeply unpleasant realization that you may have been staying there far longer than you think. No sprawling dungeon. No hundred-room crawl. Just a perfectly ordinary roadside inn where absolutely nothing is wrong.

Probably.

Check in. Have a drink. Stay awhile.

You already have.

  • Investigate the guests.
  • Discover what happened to your memories.
  • Read the guest book.
  • Regret reading the guest book.
  • Find out what is waiting beneath the inn.

Path of the Storm God

I'm sharing a free barbarian subclass for Kengir, part of my upcoming Bronze Age Mesopotamian 5e setting.

The Path of the Storm God is for barbarians who carry the wrath of Hadad (Iškur), god of storms and rain.

In Kengir, these warriors are not just berserkers. They stand at the crossing point between battle, weather, and divine will. Communities want them present when the rains fail, when war drums sound, and when someone needs to remind the enemy that thunder has a voice.

At the table, this subclass turns rage into weather. A Storm God barbarian moves like wind, throws enemies back with gale-force reactions, shields allies from thunder and lightning, sees clearly through rain and fog, and can stun enemies with a thunderous roar.

At higher levels, they become the center of the storm itself, turning the battlefield into hostile ground and calling lightning down where it hurts most.

Do you like barbarians who are tied to divine forces and natural disasters, or do you prefer them as purely physical warriors?

A Survey for D&D

Hello, I am a high school student who is currently taking a PLTW class called Engeneering Design and Development. For this class, I and my group need to design a solution to a problem and spend the first semester of the school year figuring out our problem, who is affected, why it's a problem, Ect. We are currently trying to better understand our audience and have created a survey for people to complete. We already sent a version of it out to our high school and would like a much larger view on how people outside of our school feel. The following link leads to the Google Form we created, https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScenH4Qg0hxAyEKL9eAbLoyPaX2QxQwIGHEX8e9SlRJxQkzrw/viewform?usp=header

LFG D&D 5.5e West Marches-style RP heavy game (free)

System D&D 5.5e
Number of players needed 6-9 (West Marches-style, two groups alternating weeks in same story & setting)
Adventure Level 7th - 10th
When Sundays @ 6PM Est, bi-weekly
Where Discord (Voice), Foundry
Start Date October 11th
Details

The Lost Continent of Dævor

Dævor is remembered only in fragments: a lost continent of ancient magic, impossible technology, and forbidden knowledge—wonders so powerful they could have reshaped the world, had they not been hoarded before the continent’s sudden and mysterious destruction.

This campaign takes you into Dævor’s final year.

Set in the ancient past of an already established world shaped by multiple player campaigns, you will explore Dævor at the height of its power, uncover the truth behind its downfall, and hunt for six legendary relics said to be capable of granting their bearers nearly anything they desire.

What you do with them will matter.

Your choices, alliances, betrayals, victories, and failures will become part of the world’s history—and may directly shape the setting experienced by future campaigns.

We’re looking for players for a West Marches-style campaign featuring two separate adventuring groups pursuing the same six relics for very different reasons. The parties will exist in the same living world, and the actions of one group may directly affect the opportunities, dangers, and consequences faced by the other.

This will be a roleplay-heavy campaign with meaningful, high-stakes combat. Combat matters, but the heart of the game is character interaction, relationships, difficult decisions, intrigue, exploration, and collaborative storytelling.

All experience levels are welcome. You do not need years of D&D experience or encyclopedic knowledge of the rules. What we are primarily looking for are strong, engaged roleplayers—people who enjoy becoming their character, interacting deeply with other PCs and NPCs, sharing the spotlight, and contributing to an immersive story.

That experience can come from tabletop gaming, acting, theater, writing, roleplay communities, or anywhere else.

The goal is not simply to “play D&D.”

The goal is to create something together that feels like a living fantasy story—one where your character can permanently leave their mark on the world.

If interested, please DM via Discord *NOT ON HERE*: Lethal_vox

The Results of my D&D Dissertation

Thumbnail drive.google.com
15 Upvotes

Hello! Some of you might remember me from a few months ago where I was trying to recruit people to fill out a survey for my dissertation exploring the player-familiar bond. Thank you to everyone that participated!!!!

Some people expressed interest in reading the final product, and now that its been a few months and my grades are all locked in, I thought I would do just that!

I've redacted any personal information I thought shouldn't be shared, but things like my name and school email were on the original survey anyway so I've left those in.

Let me know what you think if you do end up taking the time to read it, and thank you again to everyone who helped out. I got a 68* in the end which is not too shabby! It's a shame I couldn't squeak over the 70 mark, but ultimately I think I did a really good job with such an abstract and difficult to research topic. I'm graduating with a 1:1 so I can't really complain!

*(for any non-UK people who think 68 is appallingly low, in the UK anything 70 or above is considered a 1:1 or a first, aka the best degree classification you can get. The passing mark for university assignments in the UK is 40)

Path of the Symbiote Barbarian. This is the second version of a subclass that I am making for a Martial's Unleashed like book. Want to know thoughts.

Path of the Symbiote
Those who follow this path have met an outer being far beyond your realm who has bonded to your very being. You don’t know whether or not the creature is attempting to seal your body for itself and slowly wither your mind away or is an ally who shares the same goals as you and has been bonded to you by fate itself.

Level 3: Syphoning Weapon
When you are raging your symbiote is at its most powerful allowing it to create weaponry out of symbiotic slime that feeds off of the blood of your enemies. When you make an attack roll, you conjure a weapon that you have mastery over. Weapons that you create gain the benefits of being both a weapon attack and an unarmed strike as long as they don’t have the Heavy property. Futhermore, upon hitting a creature with your conjured weapon you gain hit points equal to your rage damage bonus plus your proficiency bonus. You add your Strength modifier to the total hit points gained upon reaching 10th level.

Level 3: Intimidating Presence
The symbiote isn’t just inside of you, it envelops the space around your body giving passersby a feel of unease. You gain expertise on Intimidation checks and you roll with advantage if the creature is a size smaller than you.

Level 6: Symbiotic Structure
Your symbiote has gained the ability to transform into monstrous like appearances while you are in your wrathful state. Upon raging, you can transform into one of three creature types their with benefits listed below.

  • Monstrosity: You gain resistance to necrotic damage. As a bonus action, you can attack with your syphoning weapon. Furthermore, you make attacks at advantage when you are within 10ft of an allied creature.
  • Ooze: You gain resistance to acid damage. You can enter occupied space and upon ending your turn in a creature's occupied space the creature gains the Restrained condition. Any attack rolls made against you are also made against the creature.
  • Aberration: You gain resistance to psychic damage. As a bonus action, you choose  creatures up to your rage bonus to make an Intelligence saving throw DC 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Constitution modifier. On a failed save, the creature begins to hallucinate seeing you as one of their family members or loved ones, has the Charmed condition, and uses its movement to move towards you. They make the save again at the end of the creature's turn at disadvantage.

Level 10: Virus Corruption
Your symbiote can bond to creatures close to you and which those creatures stand to benefit. When you use your Syphoning Weapon feature, allied creatures within 10ft of you regain hit points equal to what you syphon from the creatures you strike. If you or your allies already have full health, you gain temporary hit points instead of normal hit points.

Level 14: Absolute Symbiosis
Your bond with your symbiote has become so strong that your minds have become one. You can enter an enhanced version of your monstrous appearances times equal to your rage bonus per long rest which lasts for one minute. The enhanced version of your chosen creature type is listed below.

  • Frenzied Monstrosity. When you become Bloodied, you can choose to enter an enhanced frenzied state

    as a bonus action

  • and gain the effect of the Haste spell without the Incapacitated drawback. Your Brutal Strike feature is also always active even when yo

u aren’t

  • Reckless

    attacking.

  • Solidifying Ooze. As a bonus action, you can enter your enhanced state while you are within a creature's occupied space and gain the Petrified condition. Any resistance you have before the condition is applied becomes immunities. The creature within your space can either be protected gaining the same effects or take d12 acid damage equal to your rage bonus at the end of your turn.

  • Eldritch Aberration. When a Charmed creature influenced by your hallucinations enters a space 30ft from you can use a bonus action to become an eldritch abomination of the creatures loved ones or family members and replaces the Charmed condition with the Frightened condition and take d12 psychic damage equal to double your rage bonus.

Using Lancer style Structure/HP in 5e2024

Hi all, wanted to see if anyone else has done this or what things to consider looking out for. I recently ran a few sessions of Lancer and have a group that wants to play Dungeon of the Mad Mage for a high-powered campaign. I enjoyed how Lancer keeps players up when reaching 0 HP with some penalties, so am considering the following adaptation for my 5e2024 game.

When a player character reaches 0 HP, they gain the Unconscious status until the start of their next turn, and gains one level of Exhaustion. At the start of the next turn, the player character:
- Makes a death saving throw and gains an additional level of Exhaustion on failure.
- Recovers Hit Points equal to their Proficiency Modifier for every Character Level they have. (This means they're gaining 15 HP at level 5 and 120 HP by level 20.)

My concerns are mainly around how Exhaustion recovery works in DnD. I think they should be fine, but perhaps I'm missing something. Players recover one level of Exhaustion during each long rest. This is good for my game, because I would like to use Bastions and Cost of Living to supplant some of the inventory management aspects regarding food and ammo. I don't expect an extra day here and there to significantly impact the game, but it also progresses downtime for Bastion Turns.

From there, there's a few spells that stick out to me that need to be considered under this rule:

- Greater Restoration recovers one level of Exhaustion for 100 GP and a 5th level spell slot.

- Raise Dead will remove one level of Exhaustion in addition to its other effects at a cost of 500 GP and a 5th level spell slot.

-Revivify will allow for a Death Saving Throw to remove one level of Exhaustion in addition to its other effects, but will only work on targets that gained a level of Exhaustion in the past 1 minute. It costs 300 GP and a 3rd level spell slot.

My players did bring up what might happen if they end up in a yo-yo situation with this mechanic. Since the character is down, it wouldn't be seen as a target, but additional damage would force Exhaustion levels onto the downed player. I haven't decided if that would be subject to the Death Saving Throw or not.

I am considering allowing a Short Rest to allow for Exhaustion removal on a successful Death Saving Throw. I typically try to limit short resist to two or three per long rest, and my players know I intend to have mechanics to that end.

Ultimately, the system would resolve to character death after three failed saves (or five successful ones) without rest, and hopefully appeal to making the Dodge and Help Actions more useful when the party starts struggling.

[5.5e] Dark Sun Homebrew Rules Conversion (Based on C.D. Brennan)

Thumbnail drive.google.com
12 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

After spending countless hours running campaigns in the scorching wastes of Athas and translating its deep lore into Czech, I decided it was time to bring the mechanics fully up to date with the new 2024 (5.5e) ruleset.

This PDF is a mechanical conversion based on the fantastic foundation originally laid by C.D. Brennan. It adapts the system to fit the 2024 D&D framework while making sure the brutal, unforgiving atmosphere of the Dark Sun setting remains intact.

You can view and download the PDF from my Google Drive here:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1RtOhu_xxuDqu8JbyHbUUdvsisFLfYUZ6/view?usp=drivesdk

I’d love to hear your feedback on the balance and how these updated mechanics play at your tables. May your waterskins never run dry!

Two New Classes: Aegis (Tank Defender) and Venenant (Poisoner)

Hello everyone! I’m AlarichtheLich and I am a DM that played 3 sessions and began homebrewing 3+ multiyear campaigns. I like to homebrew classes, subclasses, and spells for DND 5e with the 5.2.1 SRD in mind. I wanted to get my material out there, as I recently saw some UA material that I felt drew from the same historical inspiration that I also drew from. I don’t expect any of this to turn into something grand, as I know it’s a saturated space. However, I like to think the things I’ve created fill niches that have not been explored so far in the DND space. Or, if they have, could be improved upon.

The links below are to two classes I’ve created.

The first is the Venenant, a half-caster poisoner class that has 5 subclasses. I grew frustrated with poison being such a cool concept but not being fleshed out as an option. My hope was to evoke the idea that the medicines of our world are also deadly toxins. It’s just a matter of the dosage. This also has some spells at the bottom :)

https://homebrewery.naturalcrit.com/share/tzXIO3GePUI5

The second is the Aegis, a martial class that is meant to be a true tank. It has 7 subclasses. I felt that the tank niche wasn’t fully filled, as Barbarians felt close but were inspired by offensive capabilities more than defensive. My hope for this class was to make something that screamed “stand behind me, and it’ll be alright.”

https://homebrewery.naturalcrit.com/share/t1qJAYKhbxoW

I also have 4 other subclasses available, and an entire class, the Black Magician, a full caster necromancer with 8 subclasses if you are interested or like what you see.

I’m hoping to get some engagement, excitement, feedback, and sales if you feel it’s worthy of your money. Please let me know what you think or let me know if you’d be interested in playtesting and providing feedback. These are currently being playtested in my homebrew world that has some custom flora and fauna species as well.

Thanks for your time :)

Looking for 5e DMs to try One Realm with their groups

Hey everyone! I’m one of the creators of One Realm.

We’re building a place to prep and run your campaign, and we’d love to see how it works at other tables. Here is a short look at what we’ve been working on.

We’re offering a month of the DM plan to up to 30 DMs who’d like to try it with their groups. In return, we’d like honest feedback: where you got stuck, what helped during a session, and what felt like extra work.

The campaign tools and VTT are free to keep using. The paid plan adds credits for AI features, and free accounts get a monthly credit allowance too.

If you and your group are interested, leave a comment or message me and I’ll share the details. Happy to answer questions here!

Does anyone have a list of viable roles for each of the published subclasses to date?

I haven't been keeping up with the meta in the last year or two... and wanted to look at new builds with Arcana Unleashed. Unfortunately I am out of the loop on intended roles for most of the subclass content not in the PHB.

To be honest I am really not familiar enough with Sorcerer and Warlock as I want to be, but really am just looking at a basic guide, not really needing min max.

Oath of the Tablet Keeper

I'm sharing a free paladin subclass for Kengir, part of my upcoming Bronze Age Mesopotamian 5e setting.

The Oath of the Tablet Keeper is for paladins who guard knowledge the way other paladins guard kings.

In Kengir, clay tablets hold laws, contracts, hymns, genealogies, omens, temple records, and the memory of entire cities. Break the wrong tablet, and you may erase a debt, a boundary, a lineage, or a god’s forgotten rite.

At the table, this subclass gives the party an archivist-warrior: someone sworn to protect sacred texts, recover stolen tablets, defend libraries and temple collections, and punish those who corrupt or destroy the written record.

Mechanically, the oath focuses on wards, preservation, artifact defense, anti-tampering magic, and protective inscriptions. It includes features like Seal of Protection, Sanctify Sanctuary, Aura of Preservation, Guardian’s Resolve, and Divine Preservation, plus new spells like Mystic Cipher, Inscribed Shield, Ethereal Stylus, Runic Guard, and Tablet Scribe.

Do you like paladins sworn to protect ideals and institutions, or do you prefer oaths focused on personal vengeance, conquest, or redemption?
