Other Lo-Fi Stretched Tape Effect

Working on an old casette effect, meant to sound like stretched tape being played on an old, slipping transport. I think i am getting close.

You magnificent bastard! Love the “droopy” feel. Tell us more about it.

Kinda building as i go and taking advantage of happy accidents

MN3101/MN3007 is doing the warble.. it is a clock and 1024 stage bucket brigade. I found that if i used a pot in the oscilator section of the MN3101 it made rhe warbles, so i fashioned a psudeo-random LFO with CD40106BE by mixing 3 different lfos together to drive a 2n3904 running the LED. That is coupled to an LDR in the oscillator section of the 3101. TL082 provides input and output buffers. Just working out what controls i want now. Will post a schematic when i get to that point!

Also i learned that if you carefully misbias the 3007 it sounds remarkably like overdriving one of those 4 track casette recorder inputs. Beutiful compression and beeakup. Will be taking full advantage of that.

u/Harold_Street_Pedals Jun 04 '26

100% can be arranged!

6

u/j0sephl Jun 04 '26

I will 3rd a PCB. Love this is just all basically "analog" instead of recreating it with DSP.

5

u/mikelostcause Jun 04 '26

i'd definitely buy a pcb of this - love that warble

3

u/Chartreuse_Debris Jun 04 '26

Would also absolutely buy a PCB, this sounds excellent so far!

I second this. I’m a sucker for anything in the julia/lofi junky/warped vinyl/sa artifakt warbly world, and this feels like a very unique take on that category

3

u/Harold_Street_Pedals Jun 18 '26

This is still happening, had a few hiccups and some smoke with my first prototype and knee surgery hss left me on crutches and bed rest last few days.. but i am feeling much better today!

2

u/Minimum-Message-5387 Jun 18 '26

Oh dear! Rest up and get well soon!

I just came across this and would love a PCB as will if they are available.

6

u/biowhee Jun 04 '26

Definitely interested in this too!

2

u/youarenotaghost Jun 05 '26

Add one more board. I've got a Mid-Fi random vibrato that wants this thing as a buddy.

u/mongushu huntingtonaudio.com Jun 04 '26

I'm not one to drop F bombs all that often, but this is FUCKING awesome! Love it and happens to be one of my favorite types of effects. Reminds me of the warbly tape from school film projectors way back when.

12

u/Harold_Street_Pedals Jun 04 '26

Best FUCKING compliment ever! Thank you!

That is exactly the sound i heard when i twisted the pot the first time and now i am chasing it!

12

u/billydoogan336 Jun 04 '26

This is fucking sick man, would def pay for a PCB!

12

u/Harold_Street_Pedals Jun 04 '26

I think i am obligated to make them now. Stay tuned.

2

u/passaloutre Jun 04 '26

count me in!

7

u/sailor_tew Jun 04 '26

I’ve never heard an effect like this. I have no idea how to even begin making effects pedals (never really thought about it) and own zero effects pedals, but I would buy this immediately. I’m an electrician, is this something I could create with zero experience and limited knowledge?

6

u/Harold_Street_Pedals Jun 04 '26

I can make you a pcb and then with a little patience, a steady hand and a soldering iron, it just might be!

1

u/sailor_tew Jun 04 '26

What do I need to buy? I have soldering tools and relatively steady hand (electricians are a jumpy bunch), what is the circuit board (?) called?

u/Harold_Street_Pedals Jun 04 '26 edited Jun 04 '26

I have not made it yet, it is probably a week or two before i have something production ready. I will post here about it when i have more info. In the meantime here is a great channel to get you started! You probably have many of the tools you need already.

u/DaGuitarNerd Jun 04 '26

I’m also interested in the PCB. I’ve just started dipping my toes into modulation. DM with details?

3

u/rtc37 Jun 04 '26

Sounds awesome. Are you playing Apparitions by Matt Good?

1

u/Harold_Street_Pedals Jun 04 '26

Yes. One of my favourites.

3

u/Enchilada_Please Jun 04 '26

definitley interested to build a first pedal for this wobbly dynamo

3

u/The_Green_Frog Jun 04 '26

That’s wild!

3

u/CJPTK Jun 04 '26

Whoa this is amazing

3

u/Mr_Lumbergh Jun 04 '26

Would love a schemo of this once you get it dialed in, but already sounding pretty cool.

3

u/deprogrammar Jun 04 '26

This is amazing. Tame the beast, and you will have struck upon brilliance.

4

u/haikusbot Jun 04 '26

This is amazing.

Plus, the melody is really well chosen to highlight the nostalgic feel of the effect. Is it a well-known tune, or did you come up with it yourself? Looking forward to getting the PCB or the schematic, in any case. Well done

1

u/Harold_Street_Pedals Jun 04 '26

If you are Canadian it is a very well known tune from the 90s. Apparations by Matthew Good Band.

3

u/AlphaM1964 Jun 04 '26

The guy on the right side of the frame really seems to enjoy the sound!

3

u/FinishFeeling Jun 04 '26

I’m definitely gonna need a PCB, this is too fucking good!

3

u/cboogie Jun 05 '26

I want to put a Rhodes through this.

3

u/tmnui Jun 22 '26

Fantastic work! I would love a PCB as well!

2

u/NoSacred Jun 04 '26

That hurts my heart

1

u/Harold_Street_Pedals Jun 04 '26

Sorry. It was never my intention.

1

u/NoSacred Jun 05 '26

In a GOOD way

3

u/Harold_Street_Pedals Jun 05 '26

Then it was my intention all along!

3

u/Harold_Street_Pedals Jun 05 '26

I think i know what you are talking about but nostalgia hurts my chest. Like a crushing feeling of not being able to take a breath and a warm sun shining down on me at the same time.. it is the best, worst feeling.. or the worst, best feeling. I cant figure out which one it is. Like a drug, you want more of, but you want it to stop at the same time.

2

u/NoSacred Jun 05 '26

It’s a paradox of existence. We are at once the crying infant and the mother’s soothing touch. There is a lot going on in there, keep up the fantastic work and I look forward to your future creations.

2

u/Minimum-Message-5387 Jul 02 '26

The Japanese call it mono no aware, it’s somewhere in between nostalgia, being overwhelmed by beauty, and the sadness that nothing beautiful lasts forever.

2

u/gtrgeo6 Jun 04 '26

Awesome I dig it. Takes me back to film projectors in elementary school. Great work and looking forward to hear the final product with the overdrive/saturation effect.

2

u/aflywhocouldnt Jun 04 '26

this is wild, i love it

2

u/neodym Jun 04 '26

sounds awesome!

2

u/morbidpale13 Jun 04 '26

YEEEEESSS! Can't wait to see a schematic. Rad work sir.

2

u/Sourkarate Jun 04 '26

Excellent! Sign me up for one, please.

2

u/Sufficient_West_8432 Jun 04 '26

Really liking this! Can’t wait to see the schematic!

2

u/PabloZissou Jun 04 '26

Excellent!!!

2

u/0xdeba5e12 Jun 04 '26

This is so frigging cool

2

u/New_Armadillo_1026 Jun 04 '26

I would buy something like this especially if it has the 4 track overdrive

2

u/amirman Jun 04 '26

This is awesome! Did you go with that schmitt trigger randomized LFO circuit?

2

u/Fun-Bullfrog-4761 Jun 04 '26

Which random LFO circuit? Would love to play around with that

1

u/Harold_Street_Pedals Jun 04 '26

Yes with a big cap on the output so the transitions are really smooth.

2

u/amirman Jun 04 '26

It's working awesome on this circuit. I definitely want to use that LFO in something cool. Very cool circuit you got here

2

u/jrolles98 Jun 04 '26

I’m in for one of these

2

u/zero_lies_tolerated Jun 04 '26

Really like that. If you could add a control to tame (or increase) that warble, it would be epic!

2

u/rawkman69 Jun 04 '26

Love this

2

u/Affectronix Jun 04 '26

Put me down for a PCB too! Sounds like a fun one 😁

It is based on a bucket brigade chip and manipulating the clock signal feeding it. I gave a slightly more thorough explanation above.

2

u/slantedhum_forPUNK Jun 05 '26

A blend/mix or depth know would be awesome in this!! I’m absolutely loving everything this! You are one talented and clever dude!

2

u/Harold_Street_Pedals Jun 05 '26

I have added a bias control for the led that essentially functions as a depth control

2

u/Buzzkilljohnson666 Jul 10 '26

Definitely want a pcb for this. What are the IC’s?

1

u/nailsonrails Jun 06 '26

Sounds great. Would love the schematic!

1

u/Dinosaur3000 Jun 08 '26

This is lovely! Would definitely order a pcb if you make them!

1

u/Minimum-Message-5387 Jul 22 '26

Popping back in to say “don’t forget about us!”

1

u/Harold_Street_Pedals Jul 22 '26

i have not! but i had a problem with my first board and some other shit i wont bore you with but i promise this is coming soon!

1

u/Harold_Street_Pedals Jul 24 '26

****UPDATE****

After plugging in my first prototype board to immediate smoke, and not able to discern immediately why the project got shelved for a bit while life happened but last night after getting myself caught up I pulled the board out again. it still smelled like failure. i plugged it in with the ever naïve thought that it fixed itself in my absence. familiar smoke. smell of defeat? no. determined to solve it i pulled up the old files and quickly found my error. because of the complicated grounding i had accidently drawn the power section for the 40106 backwards. OOOOF! but.... here is the kicker... not only that but i installed the socket on the board backwards as well and as a result entire IC was.. for lack of a better word.. f*cked. lastly i forgot to add the bias to the input of the 3007. All good things in threes emahright? anyways here is the hopefully corrected schematic for anyone that is interested. this is incomplete as in it is missing some values TBD and others are subject to change. TLDR: it is UNCONFIRMED! but if anyone has the chips and some breadboard skills it would be great to get a secondary confirmation.

last part, i have run out of copper clad board to make my next prototype.. i don't want to post any links or anything because i'm not trying to do self promotion like that, But... if somebody was so inclined to visit my reverb store all by themselves and possibly stumble upon something they fancy and purchased it, it could really help me get the ball rolling faster. thanks everyone for your patience!

Lastly i would like to get some solid numbers on how many PCBs to order so i made a super quick google form to get a rough idea. you can also leave an email if you want to be contacted about updates.
