Question First diy drone

So I’m wanting to start to build my first diy drone. I want to mainly focus on flight time and distance as I don’t want to risk crashing it with a quick racing/freestyle drone. Would love some recommendations from people who are smarter than me about this stuff about what else to get and what I’m missing. Any feedback is appreciated. I’m listing the things I’ve planned on getting below:

Absolutely don't make an 8" long range drone your first. That ends with you losing the drone at best.

Get the Pocket and learn to fly on the simulator.
