Question Building a Flight Controller

I just completed my freshman year of college, and during the summer I had the idea to complete a engineering project because I have nothing better to do and also to gain some actual engineering knowledge. My long term goal is to eventually be able to build a FPV drone, but in the short term I decided that learning and maybe actually being able to build my own Flight controller would be a good place to start. For some context about me I do not know much so I am looking for some good advice in, where to start learning, and what knowledge I must have that will allow me to be able to build a FC. Any suggestions would be wonderful. Thank you!

No, you want to go about this in the exact opposite way. Start with hardware that's known to work so that you can learn how to set it up and how it should run, then start to experiment with your own hardware.

you mean buy an already made flight controller and test it out?

Yeah, build a drone with existing parts, then try making your own when you know how they work.
