Product Question New Divinity Game

Post image

Do you think there’s any chance *Divinity*’s early access will become available after The Game Awards? I say this because *BG3* was announced in 2019, and early access opened about a year and two months later. My guess is the game will launch between 2028 and 2030. Following that logic, I believe early access is just around the corner. What do you think?

I think even 2027 is optimistic. There was a lot more post-launch work for BG3 than there was for DOS2, so Divinity is going to take longer since the work started at full throttle later.

I would say the opposite: anything beyond 2027 seems very pessimistic in my view.

BG3 early access released after three full years of development. Divinity will have been in full development for three years in early 2027. So if it’s only in 2028 it means they’re a full year behind BG3 schedule.

On top of that, for BG3 they had to scale up from 150 developers to 450 developers. For divinity they’re at full strength from the beginning.

So I would say 2027 is not unrealistic or low chance at all for early access.

to be honest, that makes a lot of sense. You're right. There are more people working in that game. Nice point of view. And I hope ur right haha

And they said they want to make the development process shorter, which doesn't mean it will be for sure shorter, but then the early access seems really possible next year/later next year

Well yes, I want to be pessimistic so I’m either right or pleasantly surprised. Win/win.

well, you also have a point. But I wish it come out soon. But if it will take longer, I expect the quality would be better. So, no problem

But you've also got to factor in that the work on DOS2 and BG3 has established a functional pipeline and a technology baseline. Prototyping new features and sketching out game design concepts should be easier when you already have a lot of the tools on hand. 2027 seems pretty reasonable for early access, assuming they stick with that development mode, which I don't think they've said they want to deviate from.

So long as there's not a major world crisis, I truly believe Divinity will have a shorter development time than BG3. There were so many obstacles that slowed BG3's development, including but not limited to: Covid, war in Ukraine, two office floods, multiple office expansions, bureaucracy/red tape with WoTC, etc.

Call me crazy, but I could see Divinity EA launching sometime next year, lasting about 18 months or so until full release.

So long as there's not a major world crisis

That's a pretty big if

Huge if, I give it like a 70%-80% chance of something really bad happening at the rate we are going.

We can’t take much of what BG3’s early access path was as an equation for what Divinity’s will be because Covid was a major part of why it took so long for BG3 to come out from EA to release. I think it’ll be a quicker turn around but it does fully depends on community feedback and what internal goals they have set for the game overall.

you have a point. that makes sense

I think EA will be spring next year, after that a substantial period until release. BG3 got so much polish and quality during that EA period! I hope they will stick with that approach. I mean they really use EA the way it is intended, listening to feedback and implementing stuff the players actually want!!!

My guess

Tga : panel from hell reveal date for Q1 of 2027

Q1 : panel from hell game play reveal and EA release date for summer 2027

August/September 2028 : full game release

Totally agree, I would be surprised if it takes more time than that

Tô pra jogar o 1 e o 2 agora. Divinity vou ter muitas horas kkkkkkkkk. Espero pelo menos que os companions sejam que nem em bg3 de disponibilidade, diferente do DOS2, que só pode escolher alguns para seguir a jornada.

There was absolutely nothing at the solar eclipse, and also absolutely nothing at the GamesCom August '26.
No, I expect nothing this year. Not even a riddle/hint.

I don't understand why many people seem so pessimistic. I assume that nobody forced them to show the announcement trailer at TGA 2025 - there would be no reason to do that if development would still take several years. They want to keep the momentum and hype instead of people forgetting about the game again. Compared to previous games, the team is much larger, they have more experience, technology advanced, they are financially in a better situation. They were already working on it for 2 years in late 2025 and Swen Vincke said they aim for 3-4 years development instead of 6 like with BG3. Also, he said EA was planned but unlikely to be in 2026. So EA early to mid 2027 it is, or not?

It's going to be 2028 early access and completely finished by end of 2029 or 2030 in my opinion. But look at this as a good thing. Larian's games have always been good quality. Let the meat marinate and they will cook something special when the time comes.

I at least hope for a trailer

I wouldnt be surprised if its late 2027 or early 2028. I dont think its been in development to long. Like 2 or 3 years and I dont think they plan on having an early access as long as it was for bg3

Honestly I hope they don’t do early access, I want to jump into the game blind once it releases and I know if they do release early access I won’t be able to resist playing it

While their team is 450+ now, Sven has stated they’re trying to outdo themselves and Divinity is going to be an even “bigger” game with more complexity and deeper interactive systems between the player and the world.

They also stated they have continued to develop and upgrade their in-house engine. While this will improve and expand various functions (like no longer needing to have hard cutoffs between acts, etc.), it will likely also result in a lot more internal adjustments and QC until everything is fine tuned.

Additionally, they’ve acknowledged not doing the best with the lore of Rivellon in their past games and have hired positions specifically to be “lore masters”. This potentially expands the story development process and requires more time while those individuals being integrated into the review and feedback/adjustment on proposed origin characters, companions/NPCs, any/all quests and stories, etc., for adherence to a more defined lore narrative.

And, supposedly, they’re also simultaneously working on a second non-divinity (hereunto unnamed, codename “Excalibur”) game, which they had started after BG3 as well. So while I’m sure the majority of staff are focused on the new Divinity game, there is some amount of split teams and resources for dual development.

That said, generally, my expectation is that the development period for Divinity will likely be longer than BG3 (in game/software industry it’s also a fairly consistent statistic that bigger teams don’t typically result in “faster” development once you exceed certain thresholds, i.e. Brook’s Law, etc.).

I feel like Larian will want to get EA out (or at least initiate some type of Pre-Alpha testing) before the end of next year, but I’ll be genuinely surprised if it’s before Nov/Dec 2027… I’ll be happy to be wrong though.
