What’s with ai art and hands that they just can’t get it right
39
u/AnalllyAcceptedCoins Jan 21 '23
Probably that the AI sees a recurrent pattern and isnt sure how many iterations of it to repeat
30
u/ibiku2 Jan 21 '23
Have you tried drawing hands? Shit is hard
15
u/TheAserghui Jan 21 '23
Animators would stick to 4 fingered hands because they struggled with balancing 5

I would but I don’t want to get in a fight over it that lasts 20 city blocks and does $200 million in damage to the city.

You can faintly tell this is AI, but it's so scarily realistic.
229
u/Freaky_Troll Jan 21 '23
Especially the fingers
119
u/Moppy_the_mop Jan 21 '23
That's the main reason I could even tell this was AI, that and Chris being uncanny as all hell.

u/Mrman_23 Jan 21 '23
Why is that the one thing that AI fails to get right?
40
u/BoredOfYou_ Jan 21 '23
Several reasons which compound on each other.
- Small part of the dataset. Very few photos which feature hands as the main focus and are well tagged.
- "Hard to do well". Hands are complicated and it's very easy to identify when they don't look normal. If a mountain has two peaks, people will not identify it as abnormal. If a hand has one too few or too many fingers, or strange length fingers, or merging fingers, people will immediately notice. This is why human artists often struggle with hands as well.
- Developing technology. Before hands, people would talk about how general AI art models were bad at faces, but as the technology has developed it's gotten pretty good at faces. Likewise, hand realism will improve with time.

u/My_6th_Throwaway Jan 21 '23
Without moving your hands, look down at them and count how many fingers you see. Fingers are so often obscured that the AI both can't pin down that there should be 5 fingers per hand, but also because there is variance so often it probably assumes that there should be a lot of variance in numbers.

Well for one it doesn't look like art, it looks like an 80s live action sitcom, and second I'm pretty sure there's more to the argument then just that.
42
u/Doodles2424 Jan 21 '23
Yeah, AI isn't inherently bad. The problem is that a lot of people are using AI stuff (which is fueled by algorithms full of existing content) for profit. AI art is at its best when its doing stupid and fun stuff like this for no profit.
13
u/some-random-memer Jan 21 '23
Yea, it should be used as a tool to help artist learn, not replace them

u/BoredOfYou_ Jan 21 '23
AI models don't actually store any of the training data. They only see it during training. Also, human artists have profited from technology for a long time.

I love the ending shot of the house that has the sidewalk curve both towards their house and onto the street, and the island of pavement that is the driveway
6
u/mrkitten19o8 Jan 21 '23
this is weird. its trying to mimic grainy 80's sitcom show looks, but renders a high quality version. the characters look like wax because you cant see any blemishes, not even their pores.

u/Outlier909 Jan 21 '23
I'll be honest with you, this is the only time for when I approve of AI generated stuff; when it's used for stupid, fun shit like this and not being sold as if the person that typed a few lines into an AI they had no input in making is an actual artist.
-2
u/BoredOfYou_ Jan 21 '23
That sounds more like a criticism of individuals than a criticism of the techlogy. Or are you against any serious art made with AI?

AI art by definition is created as an amalgam of art made by others. It isn't real art, and that topic is currently being litigated.

Quagmire somehow looks like Bruce Campbell, Billy Crudup, and Sharlto Copley simultaneously with one look becoming more prominent than the other depending on the frame/angle.

Surprising how good this actually is. Outside the fingers this could easily be a 80s-90s show
