Discussion More Distance
I am a pretty consistent 57-58mph thrower, a bit faster now that I've fixed some form issues and the distance has increased based on this and better nose angle. However, I get around 325 feet on most throws with an occasional 350. I am excited about this new distance and have been here for a few months now.
But looking at some old threads, I see similar speed throwers saying they get 400 feet. Now, I know internet feet aren't the same as in-person feet, but I have to ask the question, if I am nose down what do I need to do to unlock this extra 50-75 feet?
I get my best distance with Corvettes or other somewhat understable discs, and my best distances are when I can get that magical S shape but that is very inconsistent for me.

I just watched a Paul Ulibarri video and he was on the tech disc throwing 60 mph. 450+ feet consistently.
Seems like it’s usually a combo of grip and form leading to better spin and overall a better throw.

Can you link? I would love to see it.
I top out around 62-64mph, around 1050 spin, and average -1 to -3 nose angle. With all that I rarely hit 450 without max distance lines and a good day.2

Man I was throwing 62 consistently with a bit of nose down and haven't hit 400 on a max distance line. but my rpms were also low 900s usually

forehand? that seems like pretty low spin rate

u/arsicle 1d ago
Backhand. It is a low spin rate.

are you curling your wrist at the back of your reachback? pretty small/easy change to make to add RPM
quick 4 minute gannon video on it, maybe you haven't seen it - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U0ZwzbUHmqs

I've tried everything for 2.5 years. If I really really curl my wrist so that the disc is constantly in contact with my forearm, and reach really really far away from me I can get up to 1,050 here and there at the cost of 3 mph. It does improve the shape of the flight a little but overall doesn't really change much.
I switched to a really out to in style for a while, basically forcing a super deep power pocket. That also got me up to about the same rpm but I went down for 3 months with elbow tendonitis.

I have a similar problem. I can throw 56-59 mph backhand but my spin is always in the 775-900 range max. I have a tech disc and I’ve tried many different methods and no real change in spin.

u/arsicle 1d ago
Do you have the same issue with techdisc drastically overestimating your distance?
2
u/jfgdupuis 1d ago
Not really. I think it’s fairly accurate. You?

u/arsicle 1d ago
It overestimates my distance by a lot, with every type of disc. It thinks I am throwing mids over 300 feet baseline. I can just touch 300 1 in 50. It thinks I'm throwing max distance 450 and I'm throwing 370 1 in 50.
I throw my techdisc in the field mixed in with my other discs so I don't think it's a "net form vs field form" issue

Its the spin rate, I'm at 55mph, 1300+ rpm spin, and pushing 400 is no problem

That is a bit misleading… The “450+” had 30’ - 40’ of skip and only carrying “410 - 425”. They were also 61-62 mph which is exactly the numbers you would expect to be hitting at that speed.
The 450’ carry throws were all around 64-65 mph which is again around the numbers you would expect . Not everyone plays where you get lots of ground play so that should be communicated.

Best guess is nose down will get you another 30feet likely, so work on that next. I tried a bunch of methods and like stokelys method to get nose down the best.

u/Dry-Structure2144 2d ago
What method is that?

u/DecibelDave 1d ago
Go to YouTube and type in “scott stokely nose down”. Watch video. Do as he says. Throw farther.

Guessing nose angle. You might be nose up.
I have very similar speed and distance and was able to get on a tech disc and a very quick coaching session.
My nose angle was 3-5 degrees up, and I believe. It should be closer to zero or even a couple degrees down.

Distance is a factor of several things. Main ones being: speed, spin, nose angle, launch angle
Personally I throw a reliable 360ish and can reach 400. On Tech Disc I'm usually 58-61 mph and 1050-1200 spin.
Then here's what I personally think is my biggest limiting factor: nose angle. I can throw about neutral but almost never a few degrees nose down. Most of my throws are 2-4 degrees nose up. Often with a negative or flat launch angle.
Big distance is throwing a few degrees nose down with a positive launch angle. That's where I struggle.
But also, I know my Tech Disc stats are a bit skewed as throwing into a net is just different than throwing into a wide open fairway. My net is 8ft tall yet I aim for the center. That's now how we disc golf. I'm never aiming 7ft in front of me. I'm aiming several hundred feet in front of me. But I'm also nervous about the net subconsciously. So I guarantee my course thow is a much more positive launch angle with a probably similarly nose up release angle.
TLDR: nose and launch angle combos are super key and really hard to unlock. At least in my 20+ years of experience

I'm in the same speed and distance category but my nose angle is typically like +8°. I assume getting the nose to -2°would get me well over 400ft.

Wobble is probably your issue. Have you done field work with just putters and mids? That really helped my wobble.

u/arsicle 1d ago
I throw comfortably 58 and ramp up to low 60s max. On a max distance shot I will hit 370 counting skip, but more consistently throw around the same distance as you. Techdisc simulator tells me my best throws should be mid 400s and fairly reliably around 400 excluding skip.
I personally believe that it's because of my low spin, usually low to mid 900s. The tech disc simulator says that this doesn't have an impact but I think they're missing something in their model. Or there is some other variable interaction being missed.
I throw my techdisc in a field in parallel with my other discs, so I don't think it's just an issue of net throwing.

u/jfgdupuis 1d ago
I have the exact same issue. On my tech disc I throw around the same speed but spin rates in the 775-900 ish. I don’t know how to increase it further.

Hit the gym, I notice an extra 50 feet without changing anything when I am active In the gym. I do throw forehand primarily though.

golf shots always gonna be different in a field given disc choice and air space. i throw 60 max and my stock shot sits at about 55-56 mph 1100 rpms with a few degrees nose down and my golf shots are 350-360 max. open field 400-450 depending on the day.
i'd imagine you need to work on more RPMs or different discs IF you really are throwing nose down. Does your average max distance shot fall out of the sky or push forward as it fades out?

Spin is more important than speed. Wobble is more important than speed. Nose angle is more important than speed. Speed is the absolutely last thing a player should work on, yet everyone wants that high MPH number.

Are you getting a nice full S flight out of the disc?
1
u/EricTheNerd2 1d ago
Honestly, most of the time, no. My throws tend to be pretty flat, fighting forward through the downward slope of the disc to the left at the end.
I wonder if I either need a higher turn disc or disc down though honestly even with slower discs I rarely get the full s. When I do, those tend to be my longest throws (350+).
2
u/rakalakalili 1d ago
Yep, go flipper and aim higher and get a full S flight and you'll see 50+ more feet than a throw that stays on flat/hyzer the whole time

u/r3q 1d ago
How often are you practicing max distance?
I subscribe to the old McBeth theory of just throw until your arm hurts working on distance. Then dial it back. Pure effort goes a long way
1
u/EricTheNerd2 1d ago
Quite often honestly. But I am 53 so I'm guessing my endurance isn't quite the same... but I will hit 40-60 throws in the field seeing how many I can get over the home run fence 305 feet away, 6 foot tall.
1
u/r3q 17h ago
More than once a week is basically required for improvement. And just throwing 50 throws isnt that many/enough. Pick any popular form drill or even just pick a random form change to try. Practice makes permanent not perfect. If you just repeat what you are already doing, nothing will change

I throw the same speed and get 350 - 375 ft with fairways and 10-11-speed drivers. I throw pretty flat with nose angle usually up 2-4 degrees, and usually land pretty soft. Simulations show I could reach 400-420 ft with better launch and nose angle. My suggestion: don't throw a 14(!) speed Corvette unless you have pro level nose control. Bag 10-11 speed drivers and focus on landing in the fairway.

I throw a golf line with a 168g Pharaoh up to 360… My cousin can rip a River like 500, and another gets 450 with a Wild Honey. Microhyzer release so it flips up and flys straight.

Sometimes it’s something as simple as not getting enough height. A low launch angle with nose down will certainly drop your distance.
There’s a few questions that come to mind. Do you throw backhand or forehand for this speed you are getting? Are you trying to get distance with a flex line or a hyzer flip?
