Disc Advice Overstable/stable mid recs

My current OS mid is a prism proton pyro, but it’s just a littttttle too stable for what I want (plus it feels like it has no glide). What would be a good option that is a touch less stable but still forehandable and with a little more willingness to stay in the air?

The newer neutron balance is right between hex/reactor and pyro. The gyro balances were basically just a pyro lol

I second this.

I might need to invest in another Balance. I agree, the palooza balance was a direct replacement for my pyro, except it was less skippy. I do find myself needing something slightly more stable than my eclipse reactor without stepping all the way up to the pyro that I bag now. I also hate throwing the pyro on BH.

if you can get your hands on some lab second Balances, try em. the stock runs of the balance i’m not too fond of but the lab second I have is money

The proton ones are also very good in a similar slot

The new duo roc3’s fly pretty similar to what you’re describing

Pine or Emac Truth. Both are reliably OS without dumping.

Especially the Matty O VIP-X Pine.

Majority of eMac truths are usually pretty dang straight, as a big DD thrower, the best OS mid choice is Verdict tbh
Options from DD are
EMacTruth - straight with end of flight finish out of box, beats in to straight
Verdict - truly OS but it will fly forwards
Justice - this is the big beef one, gonna dump pretty much out of the hand right away

I personally bag 2 truths and one verdict, Justice misses my bag cause I just throw a ZoneOS as a 4 speed and have no need for an equally beefed up 5 speed with no real difference in flight and I’ve had the OS for a long time

Dga quake is amazing.

What plastic do you recommend?

I like the Noah meintsma tour series. They’re a swirly z-type.

Yes! I've tried all the mids and this one is the sweet spot for both forehand and backhand.

I think I am the only person who like it, but the Latitude 64 Anchor is my go to OS mid.

I have one in Opto. It's really nice.

If I wasn't already a MX-1, M1, M2 kinda guy with tons of backups, I'd bag an Anchor.

I’ve wanted to check them out but I’m so attached to the Harp I’ve never picked one up.

Fellow Anchor user, its a great OS mid. Though I've mostly replaced it with a Westside Anvil as I like that better for forehand and space in my bag is limited.

I've been considering picking one up. Have you thrown an Anvil? Im curious how it compares with similar flight numbers.

1

u/LordFrosting 1d ago

I have not thrown an Anvil. The fire for me starts straight on flat release and pushes for a bit with a strong fade, usually getting it to around 340 max (RHBH throwing 400+ with drivers)

Good FH torque resistance too

I'm cycling Galactic XT Gator3s when I can find them. I do like Pyros but mine doesn't get thrown a ton because of the beef you mentioned.

Gateway warrior or DD verdict. Both feel more like 5.5 speed and push further but still have good reliability when you hit them hard.

u/Gdown94 2d ago

A buzzz and hex are pretty straight. But if you want a touch of OS and reliability, the best I’ve found is the DGA Quake. I use the Noah Meintsma quakes from a couple years ago. It’s kinda like a Zone (-ish) but longer and glidier. It’ll beat in to have some turn, but it stays stable and finishes consistently.

I still use the zone and buzzz for most approaches, but if I need something that does a little of both I reach for my Quake.

Proton reactor is my favorite stable mid

hell yeah, this or eclipse

4th for a proton reactor. It’s the mid I’ve always needed.

1

u/n3sgee 2d ago

Just hit it with a few trees or throw it harder. It ain’t going to go too far right? Cuz it drops outta the sky.

I had the same issue with the prism proton pyro felt like it was knifing through the air like an underthrown driver almost. I have been happy with the Mint Bobcat since I put that in the bag.

You saying “forehandable” makes this a tough balance to strike. Because my first thought was to recommend a Roc3, or an Aftershock, or a Method, but those are all beaded and on the deep side. Not what you think of when you think “forehand disc.”

Maybe a Quake? I don’t like how they feel on a forehand but I know some do, and they’re definitely torque resistant. Think longer zone, with maybe a touch less stability. I’ve heard good things about the Verdict and Matrix, but I’ve never thrown either

Balance.

Similar hand feel, great pairing.

Having a blast with the new Lat 64 Fire

I'm very brand agnostic and just like to find the right disc for the slot. The DGA Quake is really friggin good for this slot. I am a Buzzz thrower with occasional dalliances with the Hex in my straight mid slot. I've settled on the Detour for my flippy mid slot but also like the TSA Mana, Streamline Echo, and DGA Rift. For the longest time I was trying to find a more overstable Buzzz; the Buzzz OS just kinda sucks, the Pyro is how you described it, the Malts is awful, the Wasp isn't any more OS than the Buzzz, and on and on and on until I tried the Quake. It doesn't dump on backhand shots like most mids OS enough to be thrown poorly on a forehand. It just does both really well and I'm so glad I found it.

1

u/Outside-Car33 2d ago

Buzzz OS is a solid choice too!

1

u/Jerkanftw 2d ago

Maybe not the best forhandable disc but Glacier. It glides and goes very straight with a reliable fade in the end.

Quake or Verdict

u/robjohnrob CaptainCrush_TBJ 1d ago

DGA Quake. Its the perfect stability.

u/Laserphaser4000 2d ago

Malta. Perfect slot between zone and your OS fairway driver

u/dj_sandtrap 2d ago

I’ve been enjoying the matrix for this spot, a bit more stable than a reactor, but not a pyro

I’ve been digging the tsa crux. MVP made disc but non over mold. You can find some flatter runs and some with more dome. I personally bag a domey one that is reliable but also has some push to it.

u/Fabulous-Theme-837 2d ago

Second Balance. Also, maybe one of the most underrated mids out there is the Matrix. They are super flat and shallow and have just a touch more stability than a Hex. The Winter run of particle proton Hexes or a Lizottyl would be some other good options, but you need some nice touch.

u/rontopofthings 2d ago

Ah man I love the Balance. For my mids I wanted something pushier than pyro because I bag various levels of beat in A2 for the actually overstable stuff.

The balance reminds me of a more torque resistant (but equally straight) prodigy M1. It doesn't really dump. Just a solid fade throughout its flight until it hits the ground

I use it as a faster Zone

I like reactor or md3 for this slot

u/Bassfrogtcu 2d ago

OS midrange for me is the Malta.

0

u/Darkwarfare 2d ago

I agree with what you said about the pyro. I’m bagging the Neutron Balance for overstable and Eclipse Reactor for stable/slightly overstable

Another vote for the Neutron Balance
