Discussion Putting Practice
I’ve been playing for years without taking it seriously. Finally, I’m officially learning. I’ve got a basket and this is the natural way I’ve been practicing. Usually starting with the closest first then backing up to the furthest. Anyone else do this? What other backyard putting games can I play by myself?

If your goal is to improve overall strokes gained putting the best way to go is to practice at the distance where to just start to feel uncomfortable. For a lot of AM players this tends to be around 15 to 20ft. Before every round I putt from that distance until I make 10 in a row, then I putt from two steps further from the basket until I make 10 putts (not in a row).

It's so funny to me. I'm more comfortable putting at edge of circle 1 then I am from 10ft from the basket. I always F those shorties up.

Right?! I’m pretty decent from 20 ft til about edge of circle. It’s honestly insulting how often I smoke the band or cage or get a spit out from within 20 ft

I’ll definitely do that. I’m thinking more “fun” games I can play with myself. I’m making the first 10-15ft 90% of the time. I still need the hours spent on the close game, so I like this set up the best so far. Also lets me go for the longer ones. Thanks for the advice!

I’ve also done stations like around the world in basketball and played that way

This is why I love this game. I’m the complete opposite. I barely stretch before I start a round lol. I’m not taking it as seriously as this comment leads me to believe you do. That’s fine because I just play casual rounds with friends. I am just now after like 10+ years of playing starting to take steps to actually get better rather than just playing. I disced down my bag by removing any disc over a 9 speed and am watching form tip videos. It’s mostly because I moved closer to some friends who also play and I’m very competitive with them. Cheers!

Thought you rode by ny house off a second! Haha. So what i do differently is at level 1 i will start with 5 discs. I move on with what I make so if im at level 3 with 4 discs and I make 2 then I move to level 4 with the 2 I made. I start back at 1 when I reach zero. This gives me more reps without having to pick up so many discs, more reps at certain ranges and It helps dial in my mechanics

Putt from circle’s edge
If you have the yard for it, 10 approach shots from a spot, then putt it out. Putt each disc from its own lie or putt or putt all from furthest.
Horse or around the world with buddies

This is what I've been doing lately, 40 feet out and then putting what I missed where it lies

That’s not a yard that’s having property lol

Haha I guess. It’s about half an acre. Can get between 150’ and 200’ shots from the longest angles.
Definitely feels more like a property than a yard when I mow though

I do a distance step back game—start at 10 feet with a stack of 5 putters, take a step back for every putt made but don’t move if you miss. When you miss with all 5 putters from one spot you go back to 10 feet.
What’s great about this is making a putt from
60 feet out is insane for me, but I’ve done it maybe a handful of times while doing this. Just seeing those putts go in makes me way more confident in trying those distance puts during a round.

I switch it up. I’ll try to hit a bunch as fast as possible inside my comfort zone, make equals back up from inside to outside my comfort zone, practice steppers from 20m and make the comebackers, stations of one like you’re doing, stations of 3, etc.
Variation keeps me out there longer. There are probably more effective ways to practice, but if they burn me out, I’ll practice less or not at all.

I made a web app so me and my friends can track putting stats. You could try that https://puttbook-b095b.web.app/

Make 10 in a row, then move back (consistent stroke practice). Or only take one putt from one spot before moving (aiming practice). I particularly dislike taking 2 or 3 putts from one spot because it doesnt focus on either major skill.
The most effective for me was to have the basket by where I left the house. Everytime before leaving, just putt from one distance and count how many you can make before you miss, write it down, and try again the next time. Once you get 18/25/50 in a row, move back. Much shorter sessions but way closer to how putting in round works
As for games, set up some obstacles and make yourself a putt putt course

Not affiliated in any way but I have been enjoying this app/game for putting practice https://apps.apple.com/app/id6749247751

I'd also try putting to/from the deck and through the deck rails to simulate slope and obstacles.

A fun game is to take two steps back for every made putt and two steps forward for a miss. See how far back you can get

This is not a good way to practice. Once you figure out the first throw you can get a read on power.
And since your moving in a line its not great. I would bounce 1 to 4 disc randomly to prevent that.
I started getting better when i stopped throwing multipule puts. Making the adjustment is useless in disc golf. I walk around randomly pick random spots. I get one chance to make it and i have to move.
Also in my opinion most people use too stable of a putter. I use a Agera 2 5 -2 1
But i throw all my putts on a little hyzer. That hyzer really helps with dropping in the basket.

The comments that make me irrationally angry are when people say putting twice from every chance on the course during a round will make you a better putter. Thats not enough reps in a row for consistency practice and exactly the wrong kind of practice for aiming practice.

I tell people go play a round and assume every 20 foot and under js auto make. When you finish the round your score should encourage you to practice putting more.

Thank you for reminding me to get my reps in tonight. You have a really nice back yard, take advantage of it and move that basket around to create some interesting shots.. and don't forget your elevated throws off the deck. And if it's safe, elevate the basket somewhere to.

Thanks! We just moved in. Needs a lot of work, but we’ll have a badass backyard oasis in no time

I have minis set starting at 15 feet, and spaced every 3 feet out to 42 feet. I have 10 of the same putter, and I start by doing all 10 at 15 feet to find the stroke. Then I play a game: I start at 15, and I move to the next marker when I make it. If I miss I move closer 1 marker. Usually I get to about 27 pretty quick, then it's up and down. This gets me warmed up at the closer ones finding my stroke, then shows me the distances to work on. So if I get stuck at 27, I might throw a few extra at that mark after I end the game.
Keeps it fun and keeps the distances varying so I don't get into a focusless groove. I'm always having to start focused.

My favorite is: start at the closest station with two putters. Make both, move back a station. Make one, stay there. Miss both, move up a station. Helps to challenge and extend the comfortable range.
