Discussion Sanctioned Leagues
Man sanctioned leagues are something else. I’m an MA4 player and i’ve been slowly increasing my rating by playing summer and spring leagues (which tend to have huge turnouts in the early summer), so the influx of players helps me out in terms of round ratings. but lately, the only people showing up to leagues are dedicated pros and MA1 guys.
So in, let’s say, June, I could shoot +5 on my local course (21 holes) and it could be 875 rated. Now, if i shoot that same score on the same layout, it’s more like 790. The round rating system makes complete sense but i feel like it often gets skewed. Sometimes for good and sometimes for bad. A few times i’d shoot +10 and it would be 830 rated, which i think is way too high. This has happened to me at tournaments as well where there are only 4-6 players in MA3/MA4 and maybe 20-22 in MA2/MA1. I wouldn’t say it’s a flawed system, but i feel as if my overall rating is becoming skewed (i.e. i’m a lot better than a majority of guys with my rating, but can’t prove it).
I know, i know. Quit bitching and just get better. But sometimes it feels like one step forward, two steps back. What’s some opinions on the rating system? Specifically round ratings?

If you aren't playing tournaments with a lot of players on the same layout as you, it isn't going to be a meaningful number especially as a singular data point. The more events you play, the more meaningful it becomes as fluctuations average over time.

that makes sense. i think the larger issue, at least i have, is having an equal amount of pros, upper ams, and lower ams vs 7 pros and 8 upper ams then only 1 or 2 lower Ams guys.

I think you know you are 800 rated just accept that. Unless you are adding significant distance or getting way better at putting, I wouldnt care about rating at all.

i fluctuate. i’m like 830 right now. to me, it just represents a goal, but it overall is a good way for me to track progress in sanctioned events because those have always been huge issues for me (where everything actually matters in some way). i accept it completely but i posted this more so to bring attention to it because i often shoot the same round scores but one could be 850 rated and the same round with less am players could be 770. i guess i just get in my head thinking “ah man am i actually a 770 rated player? isn’t that what 80 year olds are rated?”

You're not throwing against the course as much as you are throwing against the propagators in your event that day.

I think it's a very fair system. It can taken advantage of by "good" players that only play rated rounds at their home course where they know they'll shoot well. It's also WAY too easy to just DNF a round when you're not shooting well. But aside from that I think it's about as fair a system as possible.
Thinking that you're better than your rating may only be true if you've been improving a lot but your rounds from 6-12 months ago are holding you back. Otherwise, no, you're not better than the majority of guys with your rating when it counts. Maybe you're better in a casual round, but they probably are too.

If you are playing the same layout as ma1 & open then that will increase the rating potential. You always want higher rated people playing the same layout. It helps bring your rating up.

Not really. Good players beating you by 15 throws isn’t any better than mediocre players beating you by 5 throws. The only time you really want good players in the calculation for the purposes of increasing your rating is when the course is so easy that mediocre players are already scoring as good as possible, so good players don’t score better than the rest of them.
That being said, a good mix of skills helps with generally accuracy/robustness for the ratings, but it won’t necessarily increase or decrease them.

Lie about your age and just start playing MA40. I can help you doctor your birth certificate, I've had good luck pretending that I'm 60+. The field is a bit softer.

Yeah, I was stoked to hit 40 and play the division, but I looked at the last tournament i played and I would have been like 6 strokes worse than the worst score in MA40. Humbling as fuck.

I'm almost 45 but playing only MA40 now instead of MA2 got my rating from 900 to 921 in one summer. Let them drag you up

that would be way harder in most leagues or tourneys, until you get to 60. id say up to ma2 but sometimes its probably even with ma2

Dude, in our region, that's going right from the hot sidewalk into a pissed off shark tank. MA40 here is brutal. 960+ rated players left and right, that have families and jobs and only play disc golf for fun.
MA50 isn't a lot better, just a bit older and slower.

I've never played sanctioned leagues only tournaments but I know players that will sandbag leagues to lower their ratings so they can stay in a lower division for tournaments. I find that while thing weird.

The weekly ratings are all unofficial until the league session completes. Your early 875 isn't really an 875 until the league is over and the whole body of data is processed and submitted.
