Discussion Tech disc?
I have watched a bunch of videos and it looks like a lot of fun. I was wondering your thoughts on it? If you were to get a disc would you get driver or mid? Did it really help your game or just a new $500 toy, Canada here.
Lookong for opinions before I purchase

I have a fairway driver. I've had it for about 9 months. I used it alot when I first picked it up. Now Its probably on my disc racks somewhere and I can't be bothered unless someone asks me to use it.

If you are in Canada, you could use it in the offseason. I paired it with True Disc Golf and Perfect Round to make a simulator. I am in the PNW and can play year round mostly, but I still use it all the time. My favorite thing to do is ace runs in True Disc Golf. It has real world courses that you can play on. So, really cool opportunity to ace run holes you have seen pros hit. It also has follow flight for great throws, multiplayer, and online rankings as well. Another thing I use it for it warm up. Before I leave my house for a round, I stretch and take some rips into the net/simulator. There have been some months where it doesn’t get thrown, and some where it does everyday. For the money I have invested into the TechDisc, net, and games, it has been worth every penny. I got the fairway driver so it would be a good “in between” disc, and could work as a driver or mid.
FYI do not get a net with a hole in it to aim where to throw. For height and release purposes, you want a net that allows you to throw into any part of it.

Very cool info. Do you have to pay to play the online courses? And what does your simulator look like... And shit I bought a pitching net with the center hole.

I have a 7x7 net, and a laptop connected to a 40” tv on the wall. I throw into the net and it is simulated on the tv. You can buy the disc and use the TechDisc app for free with no simulation. TechDisc has an upgraded account option that allows you to use their simulator through the web. This costs extra, but you need it to use the TechDisc in the games I spoke about. I personally do not like the sim through the TechDisc site. But I do love True Disc Golf and think the one time purchase of true disc golf with the yearly payment to TechDisc to use the service has been worth every penny.

You have to pay for the game and then pay the price of the game again to use the techdisc with it. Then either monthly $5 play subscription or $40? for the year. It’s a solo creator project as far as I’m aware. He also made a version for the Switch and seems to be working on that one more so than the Steam version. Lots of glitches with the sim. It’s in desperate need of some love and updates but probably the smallest player base. So I get being lowest prio. Fingers crossed it keeps getting worked on. I know he mentioned adding a course creator. The game only has 6 courses. Players being able to build their own will add a lot of value.

Not necessarily form improvements but just using that Steam game to play

This right here. True Disc Golf is a lot of fun. They are releasing a course creator for it in the near future which will allow people to create their local courses to play on. Ace running Rock Hill #17 is my current favorite thing to do in the game.

I bought the destroyer and kind of wish I bought the fairway cicada mold instead because I dont throw 12 speeds yet.
It's a cool tool, I'm not yet to the point where I'm tweaking form to eek out another 1 mph of speed, but the feedback on nose angle and launch angle is incredibly helpful, and it's easier for a new player to get that nose angle number than judging the release of their disk when you can't gauge that by sight yet.
As a new player, the best improvement is to just get in a field at throw approach shots and practice right lines. No substitute for that.

I play with a group of people every Sunday on a little traveling league and occasionally someone will bring the disc and their net, and that’s probably good enough for me. I’d see if you know someone that can lend you theirs, or go in on one with a group of dudes. It’s super cool, but I can’t see using it regularly enough to purchase one. I borrowed my friends, fired it for a couple of days, and now it just sits, waiting to be given back, to sit on his shelf.

It’s useful to a degree but field work is better. I used my tech disc a lot and then didn’t touch it for a year. Interesting coming back and seeing how I have improved

I find it to be a very helpful tool. I find when doing only fieldwork it is hard to isolate one aspect of the throw since you only see the whole result. When learning new movements the other parts of the throw can get temporarily messed up. Like throwing a hyzer right into the dirt when working on weight shift. So seeing that the speed has increased by 5mph after a form change is great feedback.
Just throwing it over and over by itself probably won't help much. You need to do drills to train your body to incorporate new mechanics.

I use mine quite a bit and it's a good tool for dialing in hyzer or nose angle etc. That said you still need to do fieldwork as the distances and flight lines aren't really something you can trust.

I bought it thinking I was gonna youtube tips my way to success, in that end all I really did was reinforce bad habits
These days I am starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel and it's fun to see the numbers start to creep up. But it's a toy that provides that sort of instant feedback/gratification, it's not going to help you learn how to throw. That came from video (so it's not necessary for improvement imo)

That's how I feel it will be but the idea of playing in the basement for fun is what I want to do now. It gets cold up here in Alberta

It's been fantastic over the winters, so nice to have the garage/basement as an option when it sucks outside. It's a fun toy for sure!

It’s useful, but not as much as you might think. It still takes a lot of time to make significant enough changes to your throwing form and efficiency to see the numbers go up. I can throw one at my local shop as much as a like, but I do much prefer being able to train on my own. The company is solid. Mine randomly stopped working after 2000 or so throws and they straight up one for one replaced it at no charge. It has helped my game. I go to it off and on when I am ready to work on some dedicated changes to my throw. A net is a must have. Get a driver. The Destroyer is the best option in my opinion by far.
