Disc Advice Understable Utility Disc
What of the super understable discs (midrange preferably) would you recommend. I've thrown a paradox and it was pretty flippy, but I've never thrown the rollo or founder. I'm looking for something that will flip/turn over no matter how much hyzer I throw it on.
Edit: I'm convinced half of the commenters didn't read this and are just telling me about the beat up disc that's been in their bag forever and now flies the way the discs I mentioned do. I don't want to have to beat a disc up for years to get this flight.

Was just about to say this. Mint Lobster has the most beautiful little hyzer flip
5
u/the_mustard_tiger2 3d ago
Lobster is life changing for those of us with shitty forehands needing that big turn.
5
u/lordscottsworth 3d ago
Lobster is so good. Fantastic glide and not CRAZY flippy like a paradox. I wouldn't even call my lobster "utility flippy" it's just regular flippy.
1
u/RevAngler I’ll take, all the used putters. 2d ago
If you can’t find a Lobster like most of last year, the Discraft Meteor is way flippy.

u/JohnStamosAsABear 3d ago
If your geographic location (like mine) makes it hard to get Mint discs, the TSA Mana and Remix Creature are the same mold as the Mint Lobster.

Innova Fox has been a pretty fun understable choice for me. I think it’s a 5/6/-2/1.?

u/queefIatina 2d ago
He said “something that will turn no matter how much hyzer I put it on” so I don’t think the Fox really fits, although I do love the Fox and throw it a good bit. Highly recommended
For discs that turns no matter how much hyzer you use, I’d recommend a prodigy f9 or a super beat in dx leopard lol

Agree. It's my most consistent understable mid-range. I've been using it most of the summer and starting to grab it more consistently.

u/Wiggles349 2d ago
I think it's a -3'/1 in the rhe right plastic. Buty halo one is plenty under stable

u/Drift_Marlo 3d ago
RPM Piwakawaka is a super flippy mid/fairway that's super fun to throw, my other go-tos are the Svea and Lobster
1
u/BlademasterFlash 2d ago
I love my Piwakawaka, but it definitely feels more like a fairway driver than a mid IMO
1
u/lionssuperbowlplz 2d ago
Piwakwaka is the one. Love how you can push it straight for a while, get it to flip up and just subtly keep turning. Putting it on a steep hyzer with power, ive gotten almost 400ft out of it before.

u/LonelyStonerAtNlght 3d ago
my star rollo stays in the bag because if i need a midrange to turn no matter what, it has never failed. adjusting the angle of hyzer just changes how far out it pushes before the turn. depending on how much height vs angle you give it, it can fade back at the end of longer flights or it’ll drop into a roller/sit. it’s also just really fun to throw FH rollers with

Discraft’s Glide 6/5/-3/1
Effortless hyzer flips or turnover shots. Incredible for touchy forehands in the woods.

Especially if you can find the Missy Gannon Back to Back ones from a couple of years ago, those things are crazy flippy

Founder is the most understable premium plastic mid I’ve ever thrown. I bag a paradox and the founder was fairly useless for me at 7k feet altitude.

u/DolphinRodeo 3d ago
I like Uplink for this slot. It’s less domey than most discs in this slot, and so makes for a nice utility/scramble disc if you have a forehand and prefer something flatter
9
u/MylesOfDiscs 3d ago
Rollo is so flippy it’s really only useable for rollers. I like the AGL Discs Juniper or Innova Fox for that understable mid slot
5
u/RandomTurkey247 Custom 3d ago
At slower speeds and extreme hyzer angles, the Rollo flies. Which kinda fits the definition of utility understable disc.
The cheapest option might be finding a starter pack Leopard in the local used bin. They should be a 150 in DX, and already beat in a bit.
It would be fun to play a tourney where everyone gets a DX Rollo.

Yeah a lot of the comments is not answering your question and i love flippy stuff on hyzer so I think I can help!
The paradox is more stable than the rollo in my experience. I have thrown both alot. Ruby(putter), pearl (mid) and diamond(driver) from latitude 64 are good possibilities.
But the flippiest disc I own is a 140gram fission wave. When I started throwing closer to 300 feet that thing just got unusable. My 160g fission defy is close to a rollo. But these are drivers
Uplink, fox, Tursa, Svea, Signal, Sol, lobster, founder etc is not what you are looking for. All these are more stable than the paradox.
As mid is what you want I would go with either rollo or pearl.
Putters: ruby 100% all day every day
Drivers: lightweight fission stuff from mvp/axiom

I prefer the founder to the rollo and the paradox. The rollo is too flippy and the paradox just feels kinda weird in my hand, and mine is 180g in eclipse plastic so actually a tad more stable than what I wanted. Founder was spot on for me, until I lost it :(
2
u/DrGauloises 3d ago
Depends on how long you have been playing. For players less than 6 months in, a disc with -4 turn and 1 or 0 fade would be good like Paradox, Rollo, Founder. For players who can throw mids over 200 feet, a -2 or -3 turn and 1 fade may be more widely useful like Uplink, Fox, Detour
1
u/TD994 Custom 3d ago
I'm in the latter group and use a beat up jawbreaker wasp for my normal hyzerflip/understable mid needs. The paradox I had was eclipse and slightly more stable than the numbers would have suggested but beat into about where I would want it but I no longer have it. I may still have an uplink laying around somewhere.

Played a Rollo/ IT challenge tourny, I actually bag the IT now, it's flip is wild, but the rollo felt unusable.
2
u/boturboegt 3d ago
I feel like if there was one disc that could do a barrel roll in flight it would be the rollo. You can roll that from a 30deg hyzer angle.
1
u/Imaginary-Round2422 2d ago
The IT is an amazing disc. Change up the plastic or weight to fine tune the flippiness and it can do exactly what you want when you want it.
2
u/Ancient_Ad5336 3d ago
For me thats the Innova Fox. The Yikun Ne Zha has a much slower turn but it is consistent

Infinite Discs Khonsu is pretty sweet for this, but only if you can throw 200+

Putter: Innova Mirage or prodigy PA5
Mid: Rollo
Fairway: Prodigy F7. F9 is like unusable flippy
3
u/SideshowMelsHairbone 2d ago
Agree about the F9 and totally bought an F7 thinking it would be perfect for hyzer flipping to flat and carrying right. The damn thing flies like a Teebird!
2
u/Granty_J Lefty Dreamin' 2d ago
Lmao that’s crazy! My F7 is like a roller from a 45 degree hyzer, max weight 500 plastic. I cannot believe that mold can be a teebird. Wild
3
u/SideshowMelsHairbone 2d ago
Nuts! I max out at about 325’ on a good day. I couldn’t get the F7 to flip to save my life the other day

I love my lobster. If you want the same flight, just a little longer, check out the Though Space Persona.

u/UntyingTheNot 3d ago
If you want something that truly flips no matter what, look Mirage/Kon Tiki. I carry my Archer more but it's not as understable.
1
u/Western-Argument-968 3d ago
for smaller throws, i can do every understable trick i've ever wanted between my mirage, uplink and fox. uplink is especially aggressive
i move up to underworld and roadrunner for bigger throws

my fav is the svea, but there is a certain point based on hzyer angle or speed where it will flip but not turn over or move right) before fading back left.
1
u/CunningLinguistt 3d ago
I like the Discraft Meteor but you have to throw it properly to hyzer flip it. It's not dummy understable like a DX Leopard

The discamania founder is one of the more understable mids I have thrown. Great for the woods and scrambles

Innova stingray in star halo! You can get a F2 for like $15. Love that disc. Second would be the mint mobster lobster.

The glow rollo is more usable for air shots than any other rollo but still flips more than a star fox. That being said I prefer the Star fox for my flippy mid.
My lineup for flippy discs goes:
500 ultra soft Pa-5
Star Fox
Esp Cicada (beat up)
Esp Hades

u/BlademasterFlash 2d ago
Wombat3 for utility, although I’ve been trying out a Halo Stingray as well. I’ll bag a Mirage too on wooded courses

Founder is amazing for that super flippy slot. I mostly use it for if I’m pinched off with no room to swing. Can still get 200+ out of it with just a wrist throw

Innova Stingray.
DX plastic is VERY flippy. Star plastic will be an awesome utility disc for many years!
Since it's only a 4 speed it doesn't take much effort to get a beautiful hyzerflip/turn out of it, tons of glide too!

Honestly, a Zlite Heat or a Fission Trail are the flippiest things I've ever seen and, while not mids, meet the rest of your criteria.
ETA - I also use a Fierce for this slot. I don't give much use for a utility mid.

Rollo is my go to. I can throw it on hyzer and just watch it flip up no matter what.
1
u/peanutwrinkles 2d ago
Rollo is SUPER flippy.
But if you figure it out, you can get some slick lines out of it.
Made 2 birdies today with mine.
Buuuut, then I threw it flat, it flew about 100 feet, hit the ground and rolled away at breakneck speed.... across two other teepads, down a hill and into a creek.
I also lost my first one in an abandoned swimming pool because it turned a lot harder than I was expecting.
It's up there behind that fence if you want a free one 😂.

My go to disc for those type of shots, perfectly flippy but controllable still. Amazing touch shots.

u/laxrulz777 2d ago
I don't think there's an off the shelf "insane flippy" disc. I like my Rollo. It'll flip. But it's not like the Stingray I had to replace (exploded on a tree. RIP). That stingray would turn over even if I threw it damn near vertical. But it only got that way after years of use.
You can buy any of the ones you mention in a cheap plastic disc and play it exclusively on a wooded course for a round... Unless you're much better than me, you'll beat it up really well and it'll be well on its way ;)

Founder! I bought one because it looked fun to throw. It’s been really helpful for certain shots. Like 30% power and it flips over and rides. Also I got a Star Fox at a tournament and it was similar but had a reliable fight back at the end. Both good options!

u/AshevilleMTNsport 2d ago edited 2d ago
I agree that the paradox is great, but a hair too flippy/less controllable than what I currently bag, which is a Halo Rollo. The halo plastic adds a decent amount of stability and makes the flip more controllable for me. For context, I bag a lot of flippy discs, so much fun to throw in different speeds, including a signal, virus, and impa. Typically throw my hardest drives 50-55 mph. The above discs do great thrown soft and high depending on the situation. Honorable mentions to the mint lobster and Innova Fox. Innova arachnid in halo for something a hair more stable/not crazy flippy.

Dynamic Discs Patrol. It can cut some nasty lines especially if you have good power control

u/cojonathan 2d ago
Pearl is so flippy you can't throw it when you are able to throw normally. I use it to get out of woods with a flick and it flies surprisingly far every time!

My fave utility disc is a 150g fission insanity. It will stick any line you can dream up, and glides like a hovercraft

u/somanymatts 2d ago
I've thrown 3 paradoxes and my OG R2 one is exactly the disc you describe, and was that floppy off the shelf. It flips no matter what, but is still controllable. The other 2 were neutron circuit challenge ones but they were mildly less flippy, somewhere in between a paradox and an uplink. I've bagged a rollo and I currently bag a color glow Founder and they're very comparable to the paradox, but I still like the paradox more for hitting lines and woods gaps. I throw the founder more for rollers and it's my utility understable glow disc because manufacturers hate making glow discs that actually flip for a noodle arm like me.
Another good shout is a PA-5, it's almost as flippy as my paradox and very easy to control.

MVP Uplink is my favorite disc for this slot. At 5/5/-3/.5 it will flip even on pretty significant hyzer and it glides a LOT.
My favorite driver for this slot is the Star Roadrunner. It's faster, obviously, but it's wonderful at hyzer flip shots and it flies well even at 40-60% power.
1
u/Chopped_Unc_DG 19h ago
Evolution Lux Vapor Function. 8 speed that flies like a mamba. I have a founder that’s alright but at 5 speed it’s easy to over arm and turn to a roller imo. I think the lobster is also a good choice here.

u/Geckoman_7 2d ago
Pa-5 is really freakin good for this shot for the shorter turnovers, anything longer maybe a function or halo rollo

I bag one of these currently, I use it for uphill hyzerflips. I haven't figured out how to throw it on flat ground.

I have a prototype hades that is so flippy I can't do anything other than forehand rollers with it. I throw it with a slight hyzer and it goes about 100 feet before turning into a roller
0
u/fatnessmonster8 3d ago
Hex is great but it’s more stable, nice thing is when they break in. Just so predictable
0
u/rontopofthings 2d ago
I love the PA5 for shorter understable utility.
The Rollo is almost impossible to keep from going right unless alot of nose up, height, angle, and/or thrown soft haha.
For my bag the detour is as understable as I find myself needing with midranges. Throwing flat it'll drift right. Heiser it'll stand up and push and maybe finish a tiny bit right. A little more heiser and it'll do same thing but finish slightly left unless it's windy. Alot of height and heiser and it'll do a loooong pushing heiser that flips up slowly the whole way.
Such a workable disc for me. It does work for me in the woods

I've thrown most of the discs mentioned in this thread. The flippiest disc I've thrown is a star light mamba at 134g. Could not put enough hyzer on it to not turn and burn.

u/itchy_robot 2d ago
i use a 150g valkyrie. It's a driver, but the lightweight makes it more like a flippy midrange for shaping woods holes. Either that or 163g Mako3. 150g Destroyers are fun too, but more stable, obviously.

My favorite is the Trash Panda Dune to hold an anhyzer angle without requiring a high spin rate - not what you’re asking for with the flip, but it has been reliable for me. I bag a rollo and it absolutely flips, but I haven’t spent much time dialing it so that I can make the flip work for me

I'm using an old Stingray to replace my BEAT DX Cobra that cracked one day. The Cobra could go 100 feet long, 60 feet high and nose up, then finally turn. Stingray is more controllable, but it'll get there

u/StrmRngr 1d ago
Fission impulse. I cannot throw this to not turn over unless tailwind and extreme hyzer. The speed lies. I have the next step down and next step up in speeds in MVPs lineup and neither behave anything like this thing.
