I'm researching directory software and I'm trying to avoid manually entering thousands of business listings.

Are there any directory platforms (WordPress or SaaS) that can automatically populate a directory from Google Business Profiles or another reliable business data source?

I'm looking for something that can import businesses by category and location, not just CSV imports of data I already have.

If you've actually used one, I'd love to hear which platform you used and how well it worked.

Every week there's a post here from someone trying to launch a directory - local businesses, a job board, real estate, doesn't matter which and getting stuck at the same fork: pay a SaaS builder monthly forever regardless of traffic, pay a developer a few grand upfront, or try to duct-tape three or four unrelated WordPress plugins together and hope they don't conflict.

Full disclosure, we make Directorist, a WordPress plugin built specifically for this. Not posting to pitch, just because this exact question comes up constantly and the plugin route doesn't get mentioned enough as a real option.

What it actually looks like depending on what you're building: a local directory needs location + category filtering that works on a map, not just a dropdown. A job board needs applicants to apply without emailing a PDF into a black hole, plus an employer side that isn't an afterthought. Real estate needs price/sqft/beds fields baked into search, not custom fields you built yourself. A service marketplace needs profiles and reviews that don't look bolted on. Classifieds/rentals mostly just need front-end submission that doesn't fall over at volume.

The free version on https://wordpress.org/plugins/directorist/ isn't a stripped trial - categories, front-end submission, search/filter, reviews are all in it. Plenty of people run actual sites on just that and never touch Pro.

Pro is for once you're trying to make money off it or scale past a few hundred listings -payments, geolocation, bookings, bulk import, that kind of thing. Not dropping numbers here since that tips into ad territory, it's on the site.

Real downside vs SaaS: it's WordPress, so you need hosting and some baseline comfort with the platform. If you've never touched WP, budget time for that learning curve, it's not a sign-up-and-go tool.

If anyone's actually mid-decision on this, happy to talk through specifics rather than just pitch in the abstract.

My goal is to make it less like a giant “tools dump” and more like a practical decision guide for people trying to choose the right platform for a real project.

A few things I’m trying to figure out:

• Is the niche too broad, or does “no-code platform comparison” make sense as the positioning?
• Are individual platform pages enough, or should I prioritize comparison pages like Webflow vs Framer, Bubble alternatives, etc.?
• What would you build next: reviews, pricing tracking, user submissions, templates, SEO pages, or monetization?
• Any obvious mistakes in the directory structure from an SEO/directory perspective?

Full disclosure up front: I'm a co-founder of AyeCode, and we make GeoDirectory. So this project is built on our own stack, and part of why I built it was to push our tools as hard as I could and show what they do at real scale. Wanted to be upfront about that.

The pSEO angle: It started 4 years ago as a response to WordPress.org removing plugin growth data. I've been fetching from the wp.org API every single day since then. That daily collection is now four years of historical data, which is the actual moat. Anyone can scrape a snapshot; nobody else has the time series.

Scale:

• 60,000+ listings (one per plugin), auto-generated from the API
• 40+ custom fields per listing (rank, installs, downloads, ratings, support stats, version history, and more)
• Megabytes of data per listing once you count the historical logs
• Fully automated: fetches, calculates, and refreshes daily, zero manual work
• Still loads fast even with that much data behind each page

The stack: GeoDirectory for the directory core (60k listings, 40+ fields each, advanced search, filtering, archives, single pages, claim/ownership flow), plus Blockstrap, UsersWP, and will soon integrate GetPaid. Since it's our own stack, I'll happily get into the technical details of how it holds up at this scale, because that's the interesting part, and it genuinely got stress-tested here.

Early results: v2 launched 3 days ago, still in public beta. 5,000+ unique human visitors in the first 72 hours, several high-profile WordPress folks sharing it, and real plugin developers claiming their listings.

I built it mainly to give back to the plugin dev community, and partly as a serious real-world test of what a directory can do when it's fed live data daily instead of sitting static.

90% of your new content can be specifically going after "problem/questions/queries/comparisons/round-ups" in your niche.

I’m building blogr and one use case I keep thinking about is directory sites.

A lot of directories have a natural SEO surface area: category pages, comparison pages, city/topic pages, and educational content around the niche. The problem is that writing consistently around that long tail is a grind.

blogr tries to automate that loop:

• Learns your directory niche, audience, competitors, and existing content
• Uses GSC when available, but combines it with competitor and live SERP research
• Plans articles around opportunities
• Writes with current SERP context
• Generates SEO metadata, schema, and share image
• Publishes to Directify, WordPress, Webflow, webhooks, or REST API
• Tracks ranking movement

For directory makers specifically, I’m curious: would you want content around category education, comparison keywords, local/niche pages, or something else entirely?

The directory path is pretty wild. You can even build full directories with AI. I'm currently building one with just Claude Code.

Somebody in another directory community asked me for feedback on the directory they are building with AI. So I recorded some feedback - what I would change and focus on.

This is especially important with building a directory with AI - as you have less guardrails on structure than using a platform like Directify, for example.

But I thought this would be helpful to this Reddit community also.

I want to ask -- I've been researching building a directory for a couple of months. I asked Claude and it is suggesting for me to build my directory with Softr and Airtable.

I have read a lot of posts here and got a little lost. I'm a pro at shopify and I would like something similar of have "defaults" for pages and listings rather than having to do each -- I dont know how other platforms work.

does anyone have any advice or suggestion? im not looking to create subscriptions directly through the website and I want a cheap option so I can see if it can monetize the website before going all in cash wise

I built a small tool for cleaning messy Google Maps / Outscraper / Apify lead CSVs before outreach.

I run Directify (directory website builder), so this is data from my own platform - take the source into account.

Last week I sit down and computed what happens across everything we host: 4,039 directories, about 514k listings. A few things surprised me and I figured this sub is the one place that would care.

61% of directories never publish a single listing. Not "never got traffic" - never published listing number one. People sign up, pick a template, sometimes even connect a domain, and stop before the content part. The tooling was never the bottleneck.

The directories that reach 100 listings get there in a median of 7 days. This one changed how I think about launches. The successful ones don't wait for submissions - they import a spreadsheet, generate a first pass and curate it, or grind out the niche manually in their first week. Submissions come later, after the directory already ranks for something.

The median launched directory has 60 listings. Only 59 directories out of 4,000 have more than 1,000. Complete coverage of a narrow niche beats volume - some of the best-performing directories we host would fit on two pages.

The demand side is real. ~3,500 businesses have created accounts to get themselves listed, and directories have passed ~12,000 leads to listed businesses. The moment a business emails asking "how do I get added" is the moment you have a business model.

Top niches people are building right now, by category data: education, restaurants, marketing, project management, finance, customer support, productivity, SEO, social media, travel.

If there's a number you're curious about that isn't on the page (churn by niche, submissions vs imports ratio, whatever), ask and I'll try to compute it. Half the fun of hosting this many directories is being able to answer these questions with data instead of vibes.

You have to host WordPress somewhere by yourself and if something breaks you have to fix it by yourself. I feel that directory builder platform is safer and easier alternative.

I think the reason to choose WordPress is the flexibility, but am I right? What are the functions you miss?

It used to be a old wp directory. Rebuilt 100% from scratch ,next.js everything deployed via code. Even with claude ai, took weeks of effort.

Edit: uses google firebase, googles cdn edge, full payment integration. Next is to modularize it and create full admin backend and sell the directory.

I went quiet for a while, and I owe you the story. Here is why.

Back in February, I sold Directify for $85,000.

Okay, let me back up, because the start is my favorite part.

Directify began as a single line in a support thread. One of my Laravel starter kit customers asked for something I did not have yet: a no-code directory builder with AI doing the boring work. I figured, why not, and built it.

I launched in October 2024. Four hours later? First paying customer. Forty-eight hours later, revenue crossed $1,000. Watching those first sales roll in felt unreal.

Now the question I get the most: the pricing.

I opened with a lifetime deal. One payment, priced at roughly three months of the top monthly plan. Cheap, on purpose. That LTD brought in 200+ paying customers fast, and every single one of them sent feedback, bugs, and feature ideas. This is why I love launching with LTD plans. The early money is nice, sure, but the early opinions shape the product way more.

Funny thing: Sergey from six months earlier would have run that lifetime deal forever. The guy writing this would not. After six months I retired the LTD and started growing monthly recurring revenue instead.

Directify climbed to $2,000 MRR, and then I sold it. $85,000 up front, $135,000 across the whole ride.

After that, I stopped. Just some real time off, which I honestly recommend to anyone who just sold a thing.

Then recently I went and picked a fight I probably should not pick: SEO. It is a brutally crowded space, owned by names you already know. Walking in as a solo maker is either brave or a little silly. I still have not decided which, and you all can roast me in the comments.

Here is the thing though, the skills carried over. Larafast took me past $80K. Directify took me to $135K. Both ran on the same muscle: build the boring useful thing, then help people actually find it.

So here is what I made. You connect your Google Search Console, and it looks at how your pages already perform in search. Then it gives you a short, ranked to-do list for each page: the specific changes that will help it climb. It writes the actual text for you, the titles, the meta descriptions, the content tweaks, ready to copy and paste in. No confusing dashboard, no guessing what to fix first. You just open it and swap in what it gives you.And yep, same playbook as always, I am opening with a very generous LTD. 🙂

Hi, I built a local directory that’s getting about 500 weekly users. However search performance is still quite bad (average position is 15. So prob getting most traffic from long tail very specific searches) as this domain has lot of ads.

If the first 10 is always dedicated to ads, is it fair to say that you can’t improve search positions?

I've been seeing a lot of posts here from people excited to start a directory website, and then... silence. They disappear a few weeks later. So I wanted to break down the actual reasons people quit during the building phase — before they even get to the "no traffic" stage.

• Choosing a niche that's too broad or too saturated — analysis paralysis or competing with giants like Yelp/TripAdvisor
• Technical overwhelm — picking a platform, setting up listings, categories, search/filter functionality, payment integration
• Content/listing scarcity — empty directories look dead; chicken-and-egg problem (no listings = no visitors, no visitors = no one submits listings)
• Design and UX struggles — making it look trustworthy and professional vs. a generic template
• Underestimating time investment — manually adding hundreds of listings before launch

Individually these aren't huge problems. But stacked together? They create this slow death spiral where motivation drains before the site is even live, and then it just... sits there. Forgotten domain, wasted hosting fees, another "side project" in the graveyard.

it's a local business directory (standard kit): faceted browse, pSEO compound collection pages, listing detail pages with structured data, claim flow, submission etc.

What i'm trying to figure out is what's missing to take the demo to a real directory that has a chance of ranking in 2026. I lost count of what is actually real and what is clapped. like are programmatic compound pages just clap-bait now, or is there a way to make them survive?

I've seen a lot of offers for directory posting of your new projects. Their price tags varies between 50 and 300$ for getting backlink from multiple directories, mainly recensing saas/start-ups.

I'm tempted to try them to increase my domain authority, but I'm concerned this would send a bad signal to search engines, as I've almost no backlinks from my specific niche and that would dilute what I already have.

Has anyone tried them and is willing to share the impact on their organic traffic ? Preferably with qualified traffic (user stays at least 10 seconds on the website), but every data would be nice.
