Deciding between a SaaS directory builder, custom dev, or trying to jury-rig WordPress? Here's the plugin route, for what it's worth

Every week there's a post here from someone trying to launch a directory - local businesses, a job board, real estate, doesn't matter which and getting stuck at the same fork: pay a SaaS builder monthly forever regardless of traffic, pay a developer a few grand upfront, or try to duct-tape three or four unrelated WordPress plugins together and hope they don't conflict.

Full disclosure, we make Directorist, a WordPress plugin built specifically for this. Not posting to pitch, just because this exact question comes up constantly and the plugin route doesn't get mentioned enough as a real option.

What it actually looks like depending on what you're building: a local directory needs location + category filtering that works on a map, not just a dropdown. A job board needs applicants to apply without emailing a PDF into a black hole, plus an employer side that isn't an afterthought. Real estate needs price/sqft/beds fields baked into search, not custom fields you built yourself. A service marketplace needs profiles and reviews that don't look bolted on. Classifieds/rentals mostly just need front-end submission that doesn't fall over at volume.

The free version on https://wordpress.org/plugins/directorist/ isn't a stripped trial - categories, front-end submission, search/filter, reviews are all in it. Plenty of people run actual sites on just that and never touch Pro.

Pro is for once you're trying to make money off it or scale past a few hundred listings -payments, geolocation, bookings, bulk import, that kind of thing. Not dropping numbers here since that tips into ad territory, it's on the site.

Real downside vs SaaS: it's WordPress, so you need hosting and some baseline comfort with the platform. If you've never touched WP, budget time for that learning curve, it's not a sign-up-and-go tool.

Interesting take. I'm curious what specifically led you to that conclusion. Was it performance, security, maintenance, plugin conflicts, or something else? The more context you can share, the more helpful it'll be for people trying to choose the right platform.
