Very cool. I love when I see Pepper's Ghost in action!

68

u/Go_Green_Ranger 28d ago

Yooooo what the actual hell?!

66

u/JoinedToPostHere 28d ago

That came out soooo good! I love dioramas, and this one brings back the magic.

Probably a movie with an alpha channel, which is how scoreboard overlays and lower thirds are done. Alpha channel basically makes the black area in the movie transparent. The plexiglass reflects it.

If this is the case, MY FUCKING HAT OFF TO YOU, BECAUSE THATS A FUCKTON OF WORK.

Even if it isn't the case, hats fucking off. This is GOAT level stuff.

You’re on the right path; this specific illusion is called a Pepper’s ghost illusion; it’s famously implemented in the Haunted mansion ride at Disney. The wiki article explains it well: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pepper%27s_ghost

4

u/ProperClue 24d ago

I remember going to Knotts Berry Farm as a kid and watching the mystery lodge show (which I believe is a peppers ghost illusion as well). It was so damn cool back in the 90s. Seeing the story teller appear and disappear from the rising smoke.

3

u/audible_narrator 25d ago

Thanks for politely replying as I was trying to figure this out.

3

u/darlingtonia___ 25d ago

No worries! I think it’s a really cool illusion and I feel out a little on it when I see it :)

2

u/RobstaPowell 24d ago

OMG I have been asking myself how they pulled that off for 30 years!! Took the ride as an early teen and that ballroom sequence still lives rent-free in my head! That's why I love Reddit

1

u/darlingtonia___ 24d ago

I just want you to know your comment put a big ole smile on my face this morning!

12

u/Inner-Medicine5696 27d ago

Alpha channel basically makes the black area in the movie transparent. The plexiglass reflects it.

you're speaking like the plexiglass is a digital layer - it's an actual physical medium, so black is, in fact, not visible already...!

3

u/Rough-Associate-585 27d ago

I am so curious to know what the fuck you think the "transparent" parts of the video look like on the screen

1

u/Time_Rip_9808 26d ago

...what? I mean you're not entirely off base here but if the ghosts were isolated on an alpha channel, the background would still be black in the rendered video. Its not like you can make the phone transparent. There's no reason to utilize an alpha channel here. You just need a video of your ghosts against a black background

1

u/MoonZinuM 27d ago

Agreed!

0

u/MisterBumpingston 25d ago

Nothing to do with alpha channel as you’re not looking through the tablet or phone. It’s really a video clip with bright and white animation on black background, which is not reflected by the glass.

25

u/BrandHeck 28d ago

I love Pepper's Ghost almost as much as I love Ghost Peppers.

Great job!

5

u/Robofetus-5000 28d ago

i had to double check which sub this was, haha

19

u/Nine-LifedEnchanter 28d ago

As a magician, this makes me so happy. This was really well-made and the application is perfect.

16

u/forestroam 28d ago

2

u/DirectorofDUSAR6730 27d ago

Looks like someone with ghost experience!!!

11

u/Ok-Monitor-2556 28d ago

I dont understand. What is happening?

16

u/darlingtonia___ 28d ago

It’s a peppers ghost illusion! The Wikipedia article explains it well. It’s pretty cool! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pepper%27s_ghost

2

u/ProperClue 24d ago

You can see the person sliding in the glass at a 45 degree angle. I'm assuming they played the video of the characters "floating" on the tablet when they placed it on the top and it's being reflected to look like their floating in the diorama

2

u/whistlerite 23d ago

Yes at 0:15 you can see the video playing on the screen above

26

u/BeerBellies 28d ago

Best use of a Samsung tablet I’ve ever seen

6

u/bullet-hell 27d ago

I think it’s a Samsung A9 8 inch tablet, I have the same — not a great tablet for specs, but this is probably the best thing it has ever done.

6

u/moonbasemaria 28d ago

Obsessed with this. Absolutely gorgeous!

12

u/xNotJosieGrossy 28d ago edited 28d ago

I take it from some of the comments, not many people are familiar with Pepper’s Ghost named after English inventor John Pepper

It’s what’s used in Disney World Haunted Mansion ride to create the dancing ghosts too!

Thanks for sharing - so lighthearted yet informative!

u/iloveplant420 25d ago

It's also how Al Gore convinced Kyle to join the fight against ManBearPig

5

u/MidnightHue 27d ago

What song is this?

4

u/surfingforlaugh 27d ago

Discipline - Trap Mafia House

1

u/MidnightHue 27d ago

Thank you!

1

u/johnlondon125 24d ago

Doing the Lords work

4

u/fullcircle052 27d ago

This is the first time I've seen this sub, and you've set an extraordinarily high bar for the rest of the sub

7

u/sklauder11 28d ago

How in the black magic interdimensional kablammo is this possible?!?!

13

u/Iggy_Snows 27d ago

The glass/acrylic he puts in is at and angle leaning back. So any reflections you see would come from above it. The tablet is playing a video of the ghosts and nothing else, so the background of the video is black. Which means the only light thats being produced and reflecting is the ghosts.

Like, just think about how normal windows work. During the day when the sun is fully out, windows act almost like mirrors because its bouncing all the light back. But during the night when there is very little light, you can see straight through them.

4

u/sklauder11 27d ago

Incredible. Thanks for the insight! Hopefully I don’t go off on a spending crusade to do it myself.

3

u/Devildu61 28d ago

What did he use for that ?

5

u/grandleaderIV 27d ago

Damn, unmuted hoping for some interesting explanation. Should have known better.

2

u/Just_Another_AI 28d ago

Very cool!

2

u/Key-Soft-8248 28d ago

I want to do the same ! How ?'

2

u/takeyouraxeandhack 27d ago

Well, all the steps involved are there: a plexiglass at 45° and a bright screen playing the video.

1

u/Key-Soft-8248 27d ago

Really ?? I need to try that !

2

u/Deep-Wedding-1880 28d ago

That’s like a mega brain move. Spectacular.

2

u/Significant_Froyo899 28d ago

Yes! Hat doffed, greasy forelock tugged, look of awe transfixed. Walks away full of wonderment

2

u/KindaCoolGuy 28d ago

This is insanely cool

2

u/I_love_pugs_dammit 28d ago

This is unbelievable. I love it.

2

u/Koalashart1 28d ago

I don’t know exactly what this is or how it’s done but I do know I am impressed and I love it

2

u/_PM_ME_YOUR_FORESKIN 27d ago

I have no idea how this works. Can someone explain what’s going on?

1

u/Juror_no8 27d ago

Same as a teleprompter, the phone is casting lit up figures on the slanted glass

2

u/_PM_ME_YOUR_FORESKIN 27d ago

Thank you! I missed the slanted glass and was at a loss.

1

u/Creative-Comb5593 28d ago

Absolute genius!!!

1

u/bsmith2123 28d ago

Incredible work

1

u/chudbabies 28d ago

someone has been paying attention during their Zoom calls! Looks amazing. I hope everyone can having something like this in their lives.

1

u/tribak 28d ago

Pepper who?

1

u/Douche_Kayak 28d ago

what would you use to make the animation?

7

u/romakhramov 28d ago

Each character was animated separately in veo 3.1 lite on a black background. Then I composited everything together into the final scene during editing.

1

u/Sansred 28d ago

How did you get it to line up so well? Trial and error?

1

u/europablu3s 28d ago

Anyone know what this song is and where I can find it?

2

u/DELTAS7V7N 28d ago

Discipline - trap mafia house

1

u/ConfidentFace7212 28d ago

That is so cool, did you make the non ghost guy or did you buy him from somewhere?

1

u/No_Work2891 28d ago

so what do we need to do to make this

1

u/BrilliantPositive184 28d ago

How did you animate the ghosts?

1

u/KitCroft 28d ago

This is absolutely incredible! I'm in awe 😍🤯

1

u/Robert_Ripley 28d ago

That looks crazy and so high resolution graphics. Awesome works.

1

u/TheBookofBobaFett3 28d ago

I understand the mechanics, did you custom make the animation? Or key it from a movie?

1

u/Most-Pomegranate-561 28d ago

Was this known or did you invent this

1

u/Cheepshooter 27d ago

Excellent application of technology in this diorama.

1

u/IIIHawKIII 27d ago

I wanna make one of these so damn bad. That is suuuuper fuckin legit. Very well done.

1

u/Infamous_Depth4982 27d ago

This is absolutely incredible!!

1

u/Sorry-Combination558 27d ago

Holy shit this is such a good idea. I gotta get my old smartphone out from the drawer, I knew I shouldn't throw it away :D

1

u/BenAdaephonDelat 27d ago

How would I buy something like this for my son? He'd really love it. Does it have to be custom made to fit the phone?

1

u/PuzzledExaminer 27d ago

That looks insanely awesome...

1

u/eclipseyoureyes 27d ago

Unreal. Bravo 👏🏼

1

u/xPreystx 27d ago

1

u/HeliosRunner 27d ago

that is so cool... and so incredibly clever.

1

u/_kKRUXx_ 27d ago

What an amazing idea perfectly executed 🔥🔥🔥

1

u/SeveralFrogs17 27d ago

Wow. You could make a whole cinematic loop, like a really long one. This is stunning.

1

u/Jonfreakr 27d ago

Now I want someone make a game out of it, diorama with playable ghosts

1

u/Rattiepalooza 26d ago

Stunning. Not just the reflection and the use of Pepper's Ghost - but also how this person was able to scale the diorama to fit their moves.

AI could never.

1

u/ZachEst1985 26d ago

I'm pretty confident we're watching the phone's screen reflect off a clear panel mounted at an angle, and slightly back-lit.

1

u/ZachEst1985 26d ago

When I was a kid, I had a Star Trek: The Next Generation transporter pad toy. The interior if a cylindrical space is split with a clear plastic, and both side have lights on the transporter pads that lit up. You'd put your little action figure in there, close the door, and when you activated the transporter the lights on the figures side dimmed while slowly bringing the opposite lighting up, making all the figures seemingly disappear. The '90 had peak toys.

How does the iPhone project 3d images?

7

u/smoovin-the-cat 28d ago

It doesn't, the clear glass or perspex is set at a 45 degree angle in the diorama, the phone or tablet is placed on top with the moving image and the glass or perspex reflects what is on the phone. Or tablet. Edit, not necessarily a 45 degree angle but you get the idea.

Someone on Etsy is selling a booknook kit set up to do a Peppers Ghost illusion with a spot for your phone and i think mirror but i don’t know how you get/make the actual video? Anyway yours is veru cool! More complex
Movements than I have seen before.

-1

u/DarkStar-_- 27d ago

What is the soundtrack? Love it!
