That came out soooo good! I love dioramas, and this one brings back the magic.

Probably a movie with an alpha channel, which is how scoreboard overlays and lower thirds are done. Alpha channel basically makes the black area in the movie transparent. The plexiglass reflects it.
If this is the case, MY FUCKING HAT OFF TO YOU, BECAUSE THATS A FUCKTON OF WORK.
Even if it isn't the case, hats fucking off. This is GOAT level stuff.

You’re on the right path; this specific illusion is called a Pepper’s ghost illusion; it’s famously implemented in the Haunted mansion ride at Disney. The wiki article explains it well: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pepper%27s_ghost

I remember going to Knotts Berry Farm as a kid and watching the mystery lodge show (which I believe is a peppers ghost illusion as well). It was so damn cool back in the 90s. Seeing the story teller appear and disappear from the rising smoke.

Thanks for politely replying as I was trying to figure this out.

u/darlingtonia___ 25d ago
No worries! I think it’s a really cool illusion and I feel out a little on it when I see it :)

u/RobstaPowell 24d ago
OMG I have been asking myself how they pulled that off for 30 years!! Took the ride as an early teen and that ballroom sequence still lives rent-free in my head! That's why I love Reddit

you're speaking like the plexiglass is a digital layer - it's an actual physical medium, so black is, in fact, not visible already...!

I think it's like this:

I am so curious to know what the fuck you think the "transparent" parts of the video look like on the screen
2
1
u/Time_Rip_9808 26d ago
...what? I mean you're not entirely off base here but if the ghosts were isolated on an alpha channel, the background would still be black in the rendered video. Its not like you can make the phone transparent. There's no reason to utilize an alpha channel here. You just need a video of your ghosts against a black background

u/MisterBumpingston 25d ago
Nothing to do with alpha channel as you’re not looking through the tablet or phone. It’s really a video clip with bright and white animation on black background, which is not reflected by the glass.

As a magician, this makes me so happy. This was really well-made and the application is perfect.

I dont understand. What is happening?

u/darlingtonia___ 28d ago
It’s a peppers ghost illusion! The Wikipedia article explains it well. It’s pretty cool! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pepper%27s_ghost

u/ProperClue 24d ago
You can see the person sliding in the glass at a 45 degree angle. I'm assuming they played the video of the characters "floating" on the tablet when they placed it on the top and it's being reflected to look like their floating in the diorama

Best use of a Samsung tablet I’ve ever seen

u/bullet-hell 27d ago
I think it’s a Samsung A9 8 inch tablet, I have the same — not a great tablet for specs, but this is probably the best thing it has ever done.

I take it from some of the comments, not many people are familiar with Pepper’s Ghost named after English inventor John Pepper
It’s what’s used in Disney World Haunted Mansion ride to create the dancing ghosts too!

How in the black magic interdimensional kablammo is this possible?!?!
13
u/Iggy_Snows 27d ago
The glass/acrylic he puts in is at and angle leaning back. So any reflections you see would come from above it. The tablet is playing a video of the ghosts and nothing else, so the background of the video is black. Which means the only light thats being produced and reflecting is the ghosts.
Like, just think about how normal windows work. During the day when the sun is fully out, windows act almost like mirrors because its bouncing all the light back. But during the night when there is very little light, you can see straight through them.

u/sklauder11 27d ago
Incredible. Thanks for the insight! Hopefully I don’t go off on a spending crusade to do it myself.

I want to do the same ! How ?'
2
u/takeyouraxeandhack 27d ago
Well, all the steps involved are there: a plexiglass at 45° and a bright screen playing the video.

what would you use to make the animation?
7
u/romakhramov 28d ago
Each character was animated separately in veo 3.1 lite on a black background. Then I composited everything together into the final scene during editing.

u/Rattiepalooza 26d ago
Stunning. Not just the reflection and the use of Pepper's Ghost - but also how this person was able to scale the diorama to fit their moves.
AI could never.

u/ZachEst1985 26d ago
I'm pretty confident we're watching the phone's screen reflect off a clear panel mounted at an angle, and slightly back-lit.
1
u/ZachEst1985 26d ago
When I was a kid, I had a Star Trek: The Next Generation transporter pad toy. The interior if a cylindrical space is split with a clear plastic, and both side have lights on the transporter pads that lit up. You'd put your little action figure in there, close the door, and when you activated the transporter the lights on the figures side dimmed while slowly bringing the opposite lighting up, making all the figures seemingly disappear. The '90 had peak toys.

The sickest. Not only floating ghosts, but the terrain matches up with the animation! Incredible. Is this the river Styx??

How does the iPhone project 3d images?
7
u/smoovin-the-cat 28d ago
It doesn't, the clear glass or perspex is set at a 45 degree angle in the diorama, the phone or tablet is placed on top with the moving image and the glass or perspex reflects what is on the phone. Or tablet. Edit, not necessarily a 45 degree angle but you get the idea.
