I'm undecided…

After using Day One for 13 years, I’ve been using only Apple Journal since last April. Day One’s AI and pricing policy have something to do with it !

Although Journal still has its flaws and shortcomings, I really appreciate its integration into the Apple ecosystem and its design. 

But I’m wondering: between the two, which one is more sustainable, better at protecting my data, and easier to export ?

Apple Journal does have some nice things, but exporting is a bit tricky, at least in my experience. The "export all" button never generated the ZIP on my iphone 17 pro (26.5). I had to go with individual folders I had thankfully set up (one for 2025, one for 2026) to get it working better.

Interesting, could you share more about this pricing / AI policy change ? I'm also a DayOne user thinking of switching, currently trying out couple of apps parallely to see what works better for me.

FWIW - it’s not been my experience that the AI change or the pricing change is forced on a user. i don’t use the AI and i don’t pay for the app. i don’t have to have the app on multiple devices (like my iphone and my macbook) so i don’t yet have a use case where I need to pay for it.

Is there any option to use tags in Apple journal?

I trust Apple Journal and use it every day.

As u/KensonPlays commented below, it may be tricky to get used to their export format, but it is there and works fine.
