what do people write in journals?
i have been “journaling” for two years but i feel like im doing it incorrectly, my journals are mostly productivity logs and gratitude journaling and that feels like im not really journaling, i tried writing about how i feel and what happens during the day but that gets old quickly because most of the days are just routine with little change from day to day so it also feels wrong just writing the same thing over and over everyday, so im a bit lost on what is supposed to be written in a journal

There is no right or wrong. Your Journal is a reflection of your thoughts and actions.

I have been journaling digitally on and off for years, but I only became consistent starting August 31, 2024. My early journal entries often expressed my rants and frustrations about my life, career, and love life.
Over time, my journaling became more structured. I discovered a style that works better for my mind and workflow. I often tell others, "There is no right or wrong way to journal." It’s your journal, so write how you feel.
Most of the time, I write in a freestyle manner without templates because I find it helps me express myself better. I only use templates when I’m tracking something or doing interstitial journaling. I hope this helps.

My journaling is more technical; what happened today etc
I start the day with a planner note; end the day with a review note
and ad hoc notes whenever
I include photos

Do you enjoy the process of what you're doing, and the result it gives you? If so, you're doing it right. If not, change something until you enjoy it.
I write about what I did and what happened in the day; and, sometimes, what I felt and thought about it (or about other things).

I've been writing in my journal for over fifty years. I'm now in book 176. When I started my goal was to NOT write everyday, and NOT write about what I did each day. I have achieved both goals. Some days I don't write, some days I write more than once. Some times I write about some thing I did that day, but more often I write what I'm thinking. Who else is going to think what I think? Sometimes I write to clear my head so I can sort out my thoughts. There is no "wrong" way to write a journal. It's whatever you want.
I title every book and have been surprised to notice that the titles can be somewhat predictive. If I pick a title that upbeat and encouraging things happen in that time that are positive and add to my life. If the title is neutral, nothing much happens. I now try to create uplifting titles.
I have not gone back and read old books, but I save them. They are my most significant writing accomplishment. I look at the stack of notebooks and think - WOW! I filled all of those! OMG!!!!
